Did your parents pass down the "collecting gene" to you?

I passed it to my daughters. Since I was 5 I collected any and everything. Not sure if it's in the genes or is copied behaviour from a parent, but mine didn't collect anything. Lately they are into disney pins. Like me they go overboard on anything like this. What do you collect and do you go overboard?

My family collects sports memorabilia. My son loves it and is always selling and buying new cards with his own money. We keep everything organized and currently priced. We have a master collection and he has his own built from duplicate cards and items. I think it helps teach him the value of things and how to keep an eye on the market.

I collect some. My mother hordes.

I collected shit for others, travelling the world on their dime...so I managed to get it out of my system. Acquired some very cool, very recognizable shit.

I did get that job by collecting autographs, that I in turn sold to the Hard Rock.

I have a WW2 Soviet rifle used by tank crews. It's in perfect condition, never used. I was told that they were put in barrels of grease after the war and set in them for 50 years until someone thought to take them out and sell them. It's amazing how tough the Russians made stuff, very crude manufacturing but tough as hell.

I've got an obsession with collecting all kinds of porn movies on my several hard drives.:upsidedow

Actually I try to keep things simple and not get caught up in the collection thing if it can be helped. It's not really in me too much.

That said my mom has a problem with collecting and hoarding cabinets of all things, so she can put more shit in them.

Speaking of Hard Rock, I'm a Charter Member of the "Pinhead Club" Bought my first HRC pin around age 12 and have a small collection of almost 12k pins. Probably over 150 HRC T-Shirts. Spent enough money to earn myself 7 free leather jackets and a shit ton of free HRC merchandise and cafe credits.

I also have a collection of Jack Daniels bottles and memorabilia worth 10's of thousands.

2 complete sets of the 15 original Garbage Pail Kids series. Collected those in middle school. Turns out they aren't really worth much. :(

The type of rifle used by tank crews. The one I have is new. From what I was told they made too many and when the war ended all the un-issued new ones were put in barrels of grease and stored for 50 years before they were opened then exported for sale.

I collect nothing. Nor does my wife. In fact, we don't keep shit. Rule of thumb is if we won't need it in six months, it's out of here.

My parents never collected anything either.

kane 05-28-2012 11:58 AM

My mom is a major pack rat. She doesn't collect anything specific, but she does seem to keep anything and everything she has ever bought so she has a ton of stuff that she hasn't seen or used in years (stored in boxes) but she won't get rid of it because she has convinced herself that one day she will use it. She passed that on to my brother who now does the same thing, but I have seemed to have gone the exact opposite way and I want to own as little as possible.

I used to have a TON of pins. When they cut all of our postions, one of the things they did was buy out all of our pins. I used to off my Opening Staff pins to a collector who'd pay about $500 per pin at that point. I'd always try to snag an extra or two.

HAHAHA had both my daughters watched that when they were like 5. Both are still terrified of clowns. I can't wait until the granddaughters are a little older so we can watch it together.
