Shawarma

While watching The Avengers, Robert Downey mentioned something called a shawarma. I was curious what it was about. It turned out to be something like this.

Since I live nowhere near a Middle Eastern grocery let alone an eatery, I checked out Youtube and I found someone who gave a step step recipe on making one it at home. Now I can't wait to go to the butcher's shop to get me beef slices.

You can get that on every corner here.

RyuLion 05-07-2012 11:13 AM

I love it!!

Dirty F 05-07-2012 11:14 AM

And beef? I never seen it made with beef.

Harmon 05-07-2012 11:14 AM

All the Lebanese places in Montreal have it.

I've been told it means "Beef" though also the sandwich in general. But that doesn't make sense since the options in our Lebanese food shops is Beef or Chicken - which is "Shish-Taouk".

And you can have Shawarma pitas or plates, same with Shish Taouk.

So I go for the Beef interpretation.

Good luck on getting that beef setup - have a vertical spit is usually the best way to prep that meat...

:D

I eat a few of those a week but usually vegetarian ones (add potatoes in place of chicken or lamb). We have little stalls selling them everywhere.

It's something you can buy near every metro station. At least in my city.

They are everywhere here as well, good stuff.

MediaGuy 05-07-2012 11:42 AM

Damn. I'm getting hungry now. Very, very hungry.

(I don't like their garlic sauce actually, I usually ask for chicken with humus used instead of the garlic mayonnaise or whatever it is... and maybe some tabbouleh added or on the side if they're too anal about it...

:D

So....it's what most people refer to as a wrap.

it's basically a wrap.

No. The Schawarma is the meat. I have plates of very spicy schawarma for lunch at this Israeli restaurant every Friday with a group of friends. No wrap and no pita.

:2 cents:.

They are decent, try one out. Similar to a gyro, but apparently:

"Gyros and doner kebabs differ from shawarma and al pastor in that the former two are often made from a compressed mound of ground meat on a spit whereas the latter two are comprised of slices of meat layered and assembled on the spit."

Pretty similar, gyros has a different type of "bread" though :)

Lykos 05-07-2012 01:46 PM

I love eating that, best one i ever tried was in Bucharest, Romania :)

John-ACWM 05-08-2012 03:40 AM

Shawarma is tasty but I wouldn't eat too many of it...you can imagine what those sauces might do to a stomach in big quantities.

Phoenix 05-08-2012 03:44 AM

i love it...i get it a couple times a week usually.
i found a guy in korea as well...was so happy as i knew he would speak english.

DK 05-08-2012 04:04 AM

shoarma places everywhere here. I prefer doner kebab over shoarma though, but its both tasty especially when you're drunk.

Boston guy here.

Pretty sure we have the highest percentage of Arab population per capita. So we pretty much have the shops that sell this stuff everywhere. I've never seen turkey. Only beef, chicken and lamb.

I usually have Israeli Schawarma, I guess that's the difference. Same region, but different takes on it...

.

HomerSimpson 05-08-2012 07:11 AM

Gyros in Greece
Donner in Turkey
Schwarma in Israel

same thing but 3 countries with different religions have different name for it...

There was a study in Germany and the results were that it's one of the healthiest fast food meals because it contains very little bread and has lots of meat and vegetables...

Just looked it up....

In General:

Shawarma (Arabic: شاورما‎) is a popular Levantine Arab[1][2] meat preparation, where lamb, goat, chicken, turkey, beef, or mixed meats are placed on a spit (commonly a vertical spit in restaurants), and may be grilled for as long as a day. Shavings are cut off the block of meat for serving, and the remainder of the block of meat is kept heated on the rotating spit. Although it can be served in shavings on a plate (generally with accompaniments), "shawarma" also refers to a pita bread sandwich or wrap made with shawarma meat. Shawarma is eaten with tabbouleh, fattoush, taboon bread, tomato, and cucumber. Toppings include tahini, hummus, pickled turnips and amba. Shawarma is a fast-food staple across the Middle East, Europe and the Caucasus.

And in Israel:

In Israel, shawarma Hebrew: שווארמה‎) is a street food and offered in meat restaurants. Introduced by Mizrachi Jews and Arab citizens of Israel, the dish has become ubiquitous.[6] It was most commonly made of lamb in the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1990s, turkey or chicken became popular. After 2000, lamb/veal mix began to appear, though turkey shawarma remains the most common by far. Often the rotating skewer is placed at the front of the fast-food stand, exposed to the street. Shawarma is served in a pita or a lafa and is usually eaten with salad, hummus or french fries. In Jerusalem, the lafa is called 'esh tanur'. One of the condiments in demand is Amba.[7]
