While watching The Avengers, Robert Downey mentioned something called a shawarma. I was curious what it was about. It turned out to be something like this.



Since I live nowhere near a Middle Eastern grocery let alone an eatery, I checked out Youtube and I found someone who gave a step step recipe on making one it at home. Now I can't wait to go to the butcher's shop to get me beef slices.

All the Lebanese places in Montreal have it.

I've been told it means "Beef" though also the sandwich in general. But that doesn't make sense since the options in our Lebanese food shops is Beef or Chicken - which is "Shish-Taouk".

And you can have Shawarma pitas or plates, same with Shish Taouk.

So I go for the Beef interpretation.

Good luck on getting that beef setup - have a vertical spit is usually the best way to prep that meat...

(I don't like their garlic sauce actually, I usually ask for chicken with humus used instead of the garlic mayonnaise or whatever it is... and maybe some tabbouleh added or on the side if they're too anal about it...

No. The Schawarma is the meat. I have plates of very spicy schawarma for lunch at this Israeli restaurant every Friday with a group of friends. No wrap and no pita.

They are decent, try one out. Similar to a gyro, but apparently:

Shawarma is tasty but I wouldn't eat too many of it...you can imagine what those sauces might do to a stomach in big quantities.

Shavings are cut off the block of meat for serving, and the remainder of the block of meat is kept heated on the rotating spit.
