Obama Signs Act to Allow Detention of Citizens

HONOLULU (AP) -- President Barack Obama signed a wide-ranging defense bill into law Saturday despite having "serious reservations" about provisions that regulate the detention, interrogation and prosecution of suspected terrorists.

The bill also applies penalties against Iran's central bank in an effort to hamper Tehran's ability to fund its nuclear enrichment program. The Obama administration is looking to soften the impact of those penalties because of concerns that they could lead to a spike in global oil prices or cause economic hardship on U.S. allies that import petroleum from Iran.

It's for our own benefit. We can't let the terrorists win! 9/11 was only a decade ago!

Where were all the anti SOPA freedom fighters while this was being debated?

I guess the internet generation cares more about their torrents than actual freedom.

But at least the people rose up and got Verizon to drop it's $2 charge. Martin Luther King would be proud.

We all know who is behind all the world politics, but no one wants to really admit it, or shall I say speak it out loud.

The world will go into a new World War if we do not get rid of these pieces of trash once and for all.
Iran is not the problem.

Give everyone a hint: They already believe anyone who is not of them are less than human and need to be removed from the fields. There will be a full scale sweep across the US rounding up our citizens and placing them in FEMA DEATH camps.

Now, they can do it lawfully and they control our gov and way of life.

They're keeping us safe. Always remember, if you see something, say something. The new definition of "terrorist" has been updated to include "internet hustlers" and/or "sinner".

That AP article is nothing but smoke and mirrors. It was crafted very carefully to portray exactly the opposite of what went down.

Obama is a traitor, and hypocrite. His only objection and the reason for his threatened veto was to ensure that the federal government didn?t completely hand powers over to the U.S. military.

?The language which precluded the application of Section 1031 to American citizens was in the bill that we originally approved?and the administration asked us to remove the language which says that U.S. citizens and lawful residents would not be subject to this section,? said Levin, Chairman of the Armed Services Committee.

?It was the administration that asked us to remove the very language which we had in the bill which passed the committee?we removed it at the request of the administration,? said Levin, emphasizing, ?It was the administration which asked us to remove the very language the absence of which is now objected to.?

They also said they wouldn't raid medical marijuana dispensaries. Look how that turned out. lol

Have you even read the NDAA law?

Who cares what Obama "says," read the damn law and realize that unless it's repealed it won't only be Obama's "administration" that will be able to enforce it. There are term limits, so obviously there will eventually be a whole new gang of crooks in power ready to exploit the NDAA even if Obama's administration doesn't.

And just because Obama "says" that his administration won't enforce that part of the law right now, what's to say that won't change? Why even have that part written in the law then in the first place?

I can't believe people are actually trying to defend this type of legislation, regardless of what Obama "says." We've been heading down the road to tyranny for a long time now and it seems to be coming to a culmination. It's sad that nobody seems to care.

raymor 01-01-2012 01:23 AM

It's an interesting turn of events.

From the AP article:
Quote:

n a statement accompanying his signature, the president chastised some lawmakers for what he contended was their attempts to use the bill to restrict the ability of counterterrorism officials to protect the country.
So Obama's objection, as he signed it into law, was that the final version doesn't give him MORE authority to arrest and detain suspicious people. Interesting. I see on the ACLU site they are pretty upset, saying it's unconstitutional. Didn't Obama also say it was unconstitutional, but then sign it into law anyway? I remember hearing him do that as a state senator, saying a proposed law was an unconstitutional breach of individual rights, but then voting for it. Odd.

raymor 01-01-2012 01:43 AM

I had hoped that Obama would be able to inspire the country ala JFK, to put his charisma to work to inspire hope and a renewed effort toward greatness. I had hoped that would offset his inexperience.
I'm not seeing that with actions such as this.

Perhaps if his charisma had been combined with patriotism, as JFK exhibited, it would have had more of an inspirational effect. Perhaps it's hard to be inspired by someone who doesn't stand up for freedom and other American values, who sometimes appears to be apologizing for us, almost embarrassed to be an American. So sad. He seemed like he could have been a great leader. Perhaps after he had more experience he would have had the courage and know how to stand up for liberty. Or perhaps he's not lacking the courage and know how. Perhaps he just doesn't value freedom and liberty that much. I think he said he does NOT believe in the idea of American exceptionalism, of America trying to be a beacon of freedom.

If you have more than 7 days of food supply you are considered a terrorist.

Most US citizens are stupid and ignorant sheep who will follow the lambs to the slaughter. This is going to happen very soon.

According to the article above from the op, Congress wanted the no-trial detention and President Obama only signed after lawmakers removed it.

"The administration also pushed Congress to change a provision that would have denied U.S. citizens suspected of terrorism the right to trial and could have subjected them to indefinite detention. Lawmakers eventually dropped the military custody requirement for U.S. citizens or lawful U.S. residents.

"My administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens," Obama said in the signing statement. "Indeed, I believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a nation.""

Yep, and it is time to get his ass out. He has been nothing but a flip flopper on issues here in Arizona.....he is all for or all against an issue as long as it keeps his corrupt ass in office.

Hopefully next time around, the people will get rid of him.:thumbsup

As a matter of fact, this entire nation needs to get rid of "ALL" these corrupt old timers and get some new people in office with ideas, who are going to work for the people and not against people.
The politicians in office now are not doing a damn thing for the people or this nation, their main concern is lining their corrupt pockets...plain and simple.

Amen to both of the two preceding posts.

It's like Massachusetts and Ted Kennedy. When you have a big name like that the voters put you in cause they think it brings home the pork, even if the guy is really kind of rediculous on some of his ideas.

Like North Carolina and Jessie Helms. McCain now that he was close to the presidency will win forever in AZ as long as he runs (sadly for us all).

And to the post above this, where indeed IS all this terrorism everyone is fearing. It has been over 10 years since 911. There was more terrorism in the 90s with McVeigh and the 1993 WTC basement bombing. So now 20 years later they are passing all these laws.

Paranoia will destroya.

I agree, but the way the system is setup the new young politicians eventually become bought and sold by lobbyists and their corporate money. Get lobbyists and money out of politics and 90% of the problem would be solved.

Then again, maybe they have a legit reason for getting tough with real terrorists. I doubt the avg Joe is gonna be marched off to camps. That is also Paranoia. People suddenly missing? The whole thing is a lil too paranoid.

Do you get out of paying taxes if you are in a camp?

Who feeds your dog?

Who gets control of the house in your name? Who mows?

These are just four basic questions. :)

It isnt that simple to march people off anywhere.
