How do you stop new windshield wipers from squeaking?

Just got back from a 400 mile round trip, in light rain... Had new wipers put on the other day, and even after a 5 hour trip, they are still 'squeaking'?

Any hints or tips? I can still hear the fuckers now, and I have been out of the car for an hour and a half!

Nasty 12-30-2011 02:35 PM

Thanks, but any 'Home Made' ideas? I'm not playing the 'I cant afford' card, but the nearest auto store is in the next town - Not worth a journey in itself...

Anything I can do untill I am going to the next town anyway?

SomeCreep 12-30-2011 02:54 PM

Id hit it with some wd-40.

How old are they? Might be time to replace them. I recently had to and problem went away.

CDSmith 12-30-2011 02:59 PM

I've had this problem before. The installers may have set the pressure (as in torque, sort of) of the wipers on your windshield a bit too high as well. In other words they are pressing on your window too hard which can be causing the squeak. You might want to loosen them, there should be a little knobby thing or some visible way to adjust them.

Jarmusch 12-30-2011 03:01 PM

A drop of liquid poo does the trick.

Only "cheap" wipers squeak ... and there is nothing short of replacing them that is going to solve this ...

Premium windshield wipers are impregnated with either Teflon or graphite, and will NEVER squeak when rubbing against the glass.

Silicon spray or WD-40 should NEVER be applied to the wipers or the windshield, as they will create an oily film that will attract debris, and smudge your windshield.

RainX makes wipers now. Damn good ones too.

Take some fine grit sand paper and lightly wipe it across the rubber edge. That will slightly take off the oxidized "skin" of the rubber right on the edge.

I also noticed my wipers squeak if it's barely sprinkling and I have them on too high. The intermittent setting helps, so the windshield is a bit wet when the wipers run. The rainwater lubricates the surface. Set too fast when it's barely raining, the wiper is skidding across a dry windshield.

There is this awesome new thing called the internet. You can "buy" "things" on "websites" and then you get them "delivered" to your door!

It's amazing.

Seriously though, Amazon Prime is well worth doing. Next day courier service. And you can share it with 5 people.

tobe87 12-30-2011 03:56 PM

Use WD 40 or Vegetable oil and you wont even need windshield wipers, or lotion for that matter.

Yes, but that would mean that I would actually have to pay for it! If I visit 'Halfords' I can just shove some 'rainx' down my jumper... :2 cents:

I see the trip to Thailand didn't help your sarcasm :(

@Currently Sober, give them a wipe with washing up liquid and water using a sponge.. This should sort out the problem :thumbsup

Think that's what's up with mine. Since i got them, they've always squeaked. And they were fairly expensive ones...

Let me know if that works. Knowing what you like, I for an answer from your favorite source - I pulled that out of my ass. :)

Seriously now that I think about it, the fine sandpaper is for old wiper blades. Wouldn't hurt to try it, though.

I'm still waiting for someone to 'Helpfully Suggest' that I should take a sledge hammer to the glass, to rectify the problem...

AllAboutCams 12-30-2011 07:00 PM

do you wipers only squeak with no water on the window?

No, because if there was no water on the window, then I wouldn't be using them would I ! Thats Not a 'clever cunt' answer, but come on...

I drove in mild to medium rain. Sometimes I just had them on 'intermittent' setting - Other times, on 'normal wipe speed' setting - as was appropriate for the road / weather / rain at the time...

I would have thought that after 5 hours use, they would have lost the 'New Wiper' squeak... But thats not the case - Hence why I'm shooting the shit about it at GFY :)

baddog 12-30-2011 07:20 PM

Vaseline or poo.

Personally, doing this wouldn't rectify the problem considering the glass isn't making the noise... How about removing the wind screen wipers & drive blind :thumbsup

was just checking i have no idea why they would squeak if there is water, maybe when the new ones were put on they are too tight and one side is pushing hard on the window making the squeak. easy way to test this is pull them up like this
http://www.instructables.com/files/d...731.MEDIUM.jpg
then check to see if the second arm that is attached should move from left to right with no resistance.
this part.

The soap trick normally works. Dont ever put anything petroleum or oil based on your wipers.

I use a drop or two of concentrated dishwashing liquid on a bit of damp paper towel, rub it over the windscreen to lather it up a bit, then run the wipers. Best done when it's raining so it washes off properly.

cooldude7 12-31-2011 03:24 AM

good to know , you can afford car and wipers.

Simply remove the windshield is what Crazy Ernie sez. Squeek gone. LOL

CYF 12-31-2011 03:09 PM

I've had RainX and other brand wipers, and they all seem to squeak and leave streaks.

I was asking the guy at AutoZone about wipers and he recommended the AutoZone brand wipers. I was semi-skeptical, but at $9 each I gave them a shot. They don't streak, and they don't make much noise at all.

brassmonkey 12-31-2011 03:13 PM

regular cooking oil should be ok. rub it on with a paper towel

sinmaster 12-31-2011 09:23 PM

Most new wipers have a small alcohol pad in the package. It should be used on the "blade" of the wiper to clean all the crap off of the rubber from when it was made.
If you had them installed this probably got tossed instead of used.
Try some rubbing alcohol on a rag and clean along the length of the blade.

Any alcohol that comes within a few feet of me, goes straight down my throat...

Sorry, but true...:(
