LMAO I wish it would be that simple

twistyneck 02-05-2003 02:47 AM

Not quite. There is still that pesky little Supreme Court ruling that says that one state cannot tax the citizens of another.

KRL 02-05-2003 02:48 AM

Coming soon to desktops everywhere . . . .

They should have made their moves long ago, boy are they clueless. Think they are a bit late to the party now . . . . but we shall see.

Should be interesting to see the send in compliance with adult webmasters collecting and holding sales tax money for states. Talk about letting the wolf guard the sheep.

hell yeah. too bad it's probably taxed based on where the store is located, and who the hell has any online stores around us?

Mr.Fiction 02-05-2003 03:13 AM

Wait until they start in on the federal sales tax that they've been dreaming of.

mike503 02-05-2003 03:14 AM

all we need is more taxing, because i see a lot of benefit out of the taxes that i pay (that increase every year yet somehow schools and other things get cut more and more every year...)

"The SSTP proposes a similar deal for vendors that voluntarily comply within a year of SSTP law enactment in their state."

So, they're going to try to get back-taxes as well?
Didn't we already go through this situation with COPA and internet radio - not only do you have to pay from now on, but you've got to pay for the last 5 years?
Fuck that shit.

Muff 02-05-2003 03:22 AM

"Even if every state passes SSTP legislation, not every online seller will collect sales taxes. The system remains voluntary because states can't change interstate commerce laws. That's up to the federal government, which is the SSTP's next target"

lol. This means nothing when it's is passed according to this quote. Unless you want to charge your customers X% for purchases?

Sounds like there's quite afew years to go before it becomes mandatory to charge sales tax. Unless the federal government has gotten faster?

No, they can't go after back taxes. There is a clause in the Constitution somewhere about Congress not being able to create "ex post facto" laws. My guess is that the companies that have made agreements were not collecting sales tax from customers in their own states and were facing huge penalties so they cut a deal.

TheRedZone 02-05-2003 06:20 AM

Just another reason I won't be establishing a US presence.

Snake Doctor 02-05-2003 06:32 AM

The article says that the tax collection will be "voluntary" until federal law changes.

With the economy in the shitter I don't think that congress will pass a tax on e-commerce. That's one area where the dems and repubs seem to agree, let the internet grow.

McSpike 02-05-2003 03:01 PM

who cares. move your money offshore. I did and I care less now :D

CosmicKitten 02-05-2003 03:04 PM

Have you ever lived and worked in more than one state in a single year? The fucking taxes are a bitch and a half. I swear its a total nightmare... I've had to jump through hoops to get the forms correct. The people who make those tax forms all deserve a slow painful death.
