The other New Orleans thread...
I was going to bring it up in that other thread but theres a lot of fighting going on in there so for once i decided to not get involved ;)
Heading to new orleans this week (no, not afraid of flood talk, it's perfectly safe) who's been? who has suggestions on places to go, places to eat? I have done lots of reading on this myself already but would love to hear some suggestions from here as well--as this will be my first time. |
Yeah the big excitement right now is more flooding, whoopdeedoo! lol
There is always so much going on and things to do, even just in the quarter. Check the gambit for stuff, they list all the goods. http://www.bestofneworleans.com/ And the weather has been gorgeous! Hope it stays this way for us. The river is crazy huge right now, mighty Mississippi. |
One kind of fun thing to do is take the ferry across to Algiers Point and check out things over there. It's small but there are a couple little bars there. It has some of the oldest houses in New Orleans and is a historic district. It's my favorite part, not so touristy.
http://www.algierspoint.org/ OH, watch the cheesy audio at that site! lol |
yeah we were going to do the ferry thing for sure.. we are there until wed next week so we're going to pack in as much as possible while we're there.
seafood and the music alone sounds like i'd want to stay and not come back :) |
my favorite haunts, some pretty obscure-
1)Hi Ho Lounge - catch a live show there, alot of local rock groups, great bar/club. 2)Saturn Bar - they have live shows but you just gotta go inside to check this place out, it is like no other bar on earth guaranteed. Slightly dicey area so you might want to cab it to and from, not far from french quarter. 3)Checkpoint Charlies on Decatur, go for open mike if you can make it (i think its mondays) - local blues artists play there often. 4)One Eyed Jacks - slightly larger venue for live shows in the french quarter. Restaurants in french quarter. Ralph and Kacoos - one of the best southern seafood restaurants if not the best in new orleans. Country Flame - best food for the best price. Great fajitas. Voodoo Barbeque on St Charles Ave - great nola barbeque. Lafittes Blacksmith shop in FQ - the oldest bar in nola and worth it just to check it out and down a pint. |
On cool places to visit or check out-
Walking- during the day walk down Chartres st east bound out of the french quarter and into the bywater area, fantastic just to check out the houses. city park - again during the day, very cool park. uptown - catch the street car from canal street and go uptown to the river bend, you can also stop off at audobon park to walk around. french quarter- louis armstrong park - keeps weird hours, was closed for a while but i think its largely open now. riverwalk during the day - you can start at the end of decatur near esplanade avenue and walk to the ferry terminal to go across to algiers, although theres not a hell of alot in algiers itself, the excursion is pretty cool. new orleans cemeteries - ask around there are several amazing cemetaries to check out. and you could check out marie laveau's voodoo museum in the french quarter, its pretty interesting. |
that sounds like a great list Caligari thanks! you bring up one thing i was concerned about as well.
I wanted to check out a few places outside of the quarter in the evenings but I was wondering if it was easy enough to get a cab back from those places as well? I imagine it would be but a little reassurance would be good here hehe |

as cherry lula said pick up an issue of Gambit immediately, this will pretty much layout whats going on. and i would recommend getting an issue of anti gravity, which is on the alternative-punk side of things http://antigravitymagazine.com/ if you like some crazier stuff, this is your mag. |
Yeah, have 3 girls with me so don't want to be walking around at night too much away from the quarter really, so we'll be hitting the cabs for sure.
I have been checking out the wwoz website for local stuff so far but will be checking those out now for sure as well. |
restaurants - bayona, cochon, nola (emerils more casual place - get the pork chop), august, commanders palace (bring a jacket)
music - go to frenchman st., a bunch of good places there. and check out if anything is going on at tipitina's while youre there (will need to get a cab here). |
