Larger Monitor - Sickness/Headache ?

Anyone switched from a normal monitor to a 20" LCD or similiar size and noticed feeling sick or get a headache from it ?

pr0 01-22-2003 04:07 PM

Gotta love radiation sickness :1orglaugh

Bobby Vicious 01-22-2003 04:49 PM

deniska 01-22-2003 04:50 PM

I have a 15 lcd + 20 lcd never had a problem, beats looking at a CRT all day.

Lane 01-22-2003 04:54 PM

make sure to set your refresh rate to at least 85Hz.

i've used my 19" CRT for 2 years now, and never got a headache from it

slapass 01-22-2003 04:58 PM

I got a 18" LCD in DEC and I love it the CRT just sucked in comparison.

SextrafficPete 01-22-2003 05:04 PM

give it a few days
your eyes are probably just adjusting

Muff 01-22-2003 05:06 PM

Could be the refresh rate like lane said... If not maybe get yourself an anti-glare screen.

Rip 01-22-2003 05:07 PM

Try playing with the levels on your lcd, or lighting in the room

I found the CRT display was really hard on my eyes, especially the reflection of the room lighting on the glass screen of the monitor

Good luck

Brujah 01-22-2003 05:46 PM

refresh rate is 60hz, choices are 60, 70 and 72.
the resolution is set at 1280 x 1024

(resolution 1280 x 1024)

Gutterboy 01-22-2003 05:51 PM

I got an 18" LCD 3 weeks ago, its great. No more head or eye aches. I keep it at 1024x768 tho.

stanton 01-22-2003 05:55 PM

Fuck, I want an LCD!!!

:(

Willf 01-22-2003 06:00 PM

This is usually a common problem associated with lighting.

If you are using the screen with natural daylight make sure there is no reflection from windows (the big holes in the wall filled with glass, not the one from mr gates :) )

If you are using artificial light try not to use the centre light in the middle of the ceiling. Try to use uplighters that will direct the light away from the area you are working.

Trust me. In my day job I am a lighting engineer :thumbsup

Brujah 01-22-2003 06:04 PM

ok I did a little reading and refresh rate isn't an issue with LCD from what I've seen. Only with CRT's.

This is a 20.1" LCD.

After using it a little bit thought it seems to be a lot better. The first 10 minutes took getting used to for sure.

StacyCat 01-22-2003 06:07 PM

Sniff, Sniff, My 19 inch monitor went out on me a month ago :(

And now, my backup 15 inch is about to go out too, so I have to switch to my 14.1 vewable laptop. :-(

I never had problems except when I was tired, thenit was just too much to look at :)

AWC 01-22-2003 06:16 PM

What monitor is this?

I have 19" LCD Samsung Synchmaster and its awesome... no strain at all.

This monitor had some calibration software that allowed me to set the lighting environment. Perhaps yours does as well.

Brujah 01-22-2003 06:22 PM

I picked up that 20.1" Flat panel LCD from Dell for $849.
UltraSharp 2000 model.

UncleJimmy 01-22-2003 06:23 PM

Get a nice flat screen & a radiation filter, fixed my headaches with a quickness

MrBrian 01-22-2003 06:24 PM

what is the refresh rate? i just set mine to 85 from 75...now my brain is playing games on my eyes lol

:glugglug

FreeHugeMovies 01-22-2003 06:34 PM

Brujah,

Where did you get it from? Was it a refurbished one? I am looking to buy a 21'' LCD myself.

NightLizard 01-22-2003 06:34 PM

I know how you feel, when i got my 19inch i felt dizzy at first, all that space:) but you do get used to it after a couple of days, plus the refresh rate has to be high. i am at 1280x1024 at around 80 hz horizontal and 75 vertical
all the best and flat rocks!

Someone here posted a link to a deal from GotApex.com, apparently 15% off certain Dell monitors. That gave me $150 off the normal $999 price.

SureFire 01-22-2003 06:46 PM

It may be time for computer glasses! I was getting headaches all the time and Advil just wasn?t cutting it. Saw an Ophthalmologist, my eyes are good, but when he heard that I work on a computer 12 hours a day, a prescription was given. The glasses seem to relieve the eye stress but his suggestion of doing eye exercises (every half an hour ?stare? at a far point for a couple of minutes) made the headaches go away.

Lighting, as mentioned, is very important and refresh rate. I don?t have a LCD monitor but with my laptop I tilt it a little forward?seems to helps.

:)

Throw it away.

Err its a LCD? I don't know much about LCD's really.. but if its a CRT with those refresh rates -- that would make me sick for sure.

CNet 95% recommended
http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/0...-20025054.html

The monitor gives you the viewing area of a 21- inch CRT display and offers picture-in-picture capability with analog, digital, S-video and composite inputs.

I mentioned earlier that I read the refresh rates aren't a factor for LCD's. So this doesn't apply if that's correct, unless you know something I don't.

alias 01-22-2003 07:31 PM

ATTENTION CRT EXPERTS!$$! THE REFRESH RATES DON'T MATTER FOR LCD!!

FreeHugeMovies 01-22-2003 07:31 PM

Brujah,

Do you have the URL from which you purchased it? I have my CC in hand. :thumbsup

21" Sony trinitron for the last 2 years. love it.

FreeHugeMovies 01-22-2003 08:54 PM

Anyone else know of a good place to get 19-21'' LCD's cheap?

Shoplifter 01-22-2003 09:21 PM

Yep. Got a 19" NEC LCD. I made it for about 3 days before I took it back.

The resolution was just too intense, I prefer 1024 x 768 and as well the 60hz flicker from the backlight was murder.

unconnected 01-22-2003 10:29 PM

Both of mine are over 21 inches and I have never gotten sick staring at them all day long..

You can pick up a 20' LCD Dell 2000FP for around $850 on ebay. I have it and its great, run 1600X1200 like my 21 CRT at home.

PornoDoggy 01-22-2003 11:21 PM

If I work on a monitor smaller than my 20" for too long, or work at a resolution lower than 1280 x 1164, I get a screaming headache.

Phil21 01-23-2003 12:28 AM

Brujah,

Definitely. It will go away (does for me) after getting used to it though.

Just tought it out, in a couple days nothing will seem out of normal.

Just moving from a 17" to 19" effected me a little.

I bet you also get motion sickness when reading in a car right? ;)

If so I bet they are related somehow.. I do as well.

-Phil

m0rph3us 01-23-2003 12:37 AM

yup you'll get that for 3-5 days when switching from CRT -> LCD. BUt don't worry, in the long run your eyes will be healthier. LCDs emit 0 radiation.

High Quality 01-23-2003 12:39 AM

I have a 21" CRT. I would never ever ever use a LCD. Their colors and viewing angle are poor as as fuck. I've never gotten a headache from looking at my crt.

True.. I can't read much in the car without feeling a little sick or playing certain games like Quake for too long either.

DarkJedi 01-23-2003 01:02 AM

I just got a LCD 19" Samsung
Damn, this thing is sweet !!

Eyes dont hurt at all and theres no radiation from it.
Plus it takes so little desk space.

Well HELL YEAH.. its a 2000FP dell LCD :thumbsup

Thats good stuff... I want to get like 10 of them :1orglaugh.

I thought you said you had a CRT... I don't really know about LCD refresh rates, I'm sure its not the same as CRT's on your eyes. But I guarantee you if I had to look at a _CRT_ monitor that was less than 85hz for more than 20 minutes - it would be sitting on the curb within 30.

FreeHugeMovies 01-23-2003 09:37 AM

What company actually make the DELL LCD's?

heqdvd 01-23-2003 09:38 AM

I don't but you MUST stay a arm's length from any monitor and take a 5 min break every hour. Period.

If not, your brain slowly nukes. But that may be good for adult BBS...

jft 01-23-2003 09:49 AM

damn! after reading these posts i gotta get me a LCD screen.

Im positive my 'panda-eyes' are due to staring at a shitty 15 inch monitor for 10 hours a fucking day........

seriously tho' i remember my girl tellin me that my eyes were soooo fucking dark, this was about 6 years ago - the exact same time i started abusing my eyeballs with a computer monitor for long periods...

They've been darker than darth vaders crack ever since..

coincidence???

i reckon not.

FreeHugeMovies 01-24-2003 06:37 PM

I found some on e-bay but they want 900 =[

FreeHugeMovies 02-13-2003 09:19 PM

Okay I finally got one of those bad boys and man it's fucking huge. My video card supports the DVI and D-Sub links but the install instructions say not to use both at the same time. May I ask which on I should use? The instructions give you no indication on which to choose. Also, what should I move the refresh rate too?

Jizar ll 02-13-2003 09:32 PM

How do these LCD monitors compare to CRT in regards to detailed photoshop/video work?
