Wesley Snipes ordered to Prison

Wesley Snipes was ordered to report to the Federal Bureau of Prisons to serve a 36 month term for tax related crimes.
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/...,7260860.story

CYF 11-19-2010 11:55 AM

Snipes, 48, an Orlando-born star of "Jungle Fever," "White Men Can't Jump," and the Fugitive sequel "U.S. Marshals," was convicted in 2008 of three misdemeanor counts of willfully failing to file federal tax returns.

3 misdemeanors will get you 3 years in prison? Don't fuck with the IRS I guess.

CDSmith 11-19-2010 11:57 AM

If you're famous and a movie star you get "asked" to report to prison.

The rest of us get taken there, forcibly if necessary.

fatfoo 11-19-2010 11:58 AM

A federal judge today rejected movie star (best known for Blade) Wesley Snipes' demand for a new trial and ordered the actor to surrender to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons to begin serving a 36-month prison sentence for tax-related crimes.

This sounds quite serious. This breaking news is a big surprise to me.

Damn that's a shame I like his movie

Why is it a shame? He was making millions and he failed to pay his taxes. Fuck him,

MrBottomTooth 11-19-2010 12:18 PM

3 years seems ridiculous.

Now the taxpayers have to support him in prison for 3 years, and he has no chance to go out and work for those three years to make the millions of dollars he usually makes, which would have resulted in millions more paid in income taxes.

I think making him pay his taxes along with hefty fines and interest owing would have been more effective. Maybe he'll get out in a month though, like most celebrities.

He'll most likely serve less than 1/2 of that and be released on probation for the remainder.

I believe at least 85% of time must be served in Federal prison.

brassmonkey 11-19-2010 01:19 PM

don't drop the soap. if you do just leave it there.

ottopottomouse 11-19-2010 01:21 PM

Only needs to cry a bit and he'll be let out early.

they threw the book at him because he was associated with the tax-protester movement and used them for his defense.

no government likes the legitimacy of it's tax regime changed.

wild johnny 11-19-2010 01:39 PM

I guess what ever that tax shelter was gets a fail.

Too bad he has to do time in club fed. But they will surely spin it into a movie.

It wouldn't have resulted in millions of tax dollars if he never pays, LOL.

But I agree, prison for tax evasion always seems very weird. Nobody is really directly impacted. Yet we have guys running ponzi schemes and destroying pension funds, literally ruining lives, and nothing happens to them.

Think this has been brewing for quite a while now. Something creepy about him.. cant put my finger on it.

PornMD 11-19-2010 04:31 PM

Wonder if he'll come out of prison as Simon Phoenix.

I agree. Three years is crazy. Snipes was dumb as hell. He got involved with one of those guys who convinced him that the the constitution says US citizens don't have to pay taxes. So not only did he no file or pay for several years, he actually filed an amended return to try to get back 4 million he had paid in.

So he is dumb, but sending him to jail doesn't really benefit anyone. If he got a huge fine and was probation so he could work he could earn money, pay back what he owes and keep paying into the system it would be better. Just make part of his parole that he has to file every year. Now his already waning career is going to go further down the drain so the chances of him paying all this back in a timely way just went way down.

LeRoy 11-19-2010 04:44 PM

He prolly pissed off the judge during the trial. This is a big no no if your'e found guilty.

3 Years goes by fast though.

I wonder if they allow conjugal visits in Federal Prison.

I don't imagine 3 years in prison going very fast :1orglaugh

thickcash_amo 11-19-2010 06:02 PM

Why can't he just pay the taxes and call it even? Wouldn't that be better for the IRS anyway?

scubadiver626 11-19-2010 06:19 PM

Its called making an example out of someone. Half of congress is guilty of non payment. Its a fear tactic more than anything else to keep us good sheep in line.

I actually read where the prosecutor asked the judge to throw the book at him and make an example of him because he is famous.

Mutt 11-19-2010 06:38 PM

i think in this case his being a celebrity worked against him, the goverment is using him as an example. his being black, really not sure that if Tom Cruise had done the same thing whether he'd have received 3 years in prison.

scubadiver626 11-19-2010 07:16 PM

The IRS has said it many times, "We don't want to ruin lives, we just want the money."

For 99% of Americans in default, jail time for taxes is not in the cards.

The CA Franchise Tax Board is actually THE worst people you ever want to owe money too. Sadly I speak from experience.

Yup and there is no good time work time. He will do 85%-90% of the time and nothing will stop that.

The government does not fuck around when you don't pay your taxes.

Nothing to do with "teabaggers' but the Red Herring was cute as it went by. Snipes bought into the myth that the IRS has no legal auathority to collect taxes. Found out he was wrong.
