not really, he was the poster child for the "you dont really need to pay any taxes" group. If they had let him off, it would have sent a message to the THOUSANDS of followers of his movement "dont pay taxes like me and nothing will happen to you". So now instead of missing a few million they would be looking at losing hundreds of millions of taxes, and if all those people weren't punished it would result in an even bigger loss. Kill the head of the snake the body will wither away.

i agree, it had nothing to do with race or hollywood but using tax-resister, denier arguments and practices. people who do that in court always end up with heavy jail terms. it is one thing to keep two sets of books, is it another to call into question he legitimacy of the tax system, no matter how misguided.
