thinking about going from PC to MAC

was in bestbuy today saw the imac 27" system for $1799, looks sexy.

Love how the mac has it all built into the display, no damn wires, my pc is a mess with all the wires.

:thumbsup

seeric 03-18-2010 03:39 PM

did it 2 years ago. haven't looked back.

for someone like yourself though, you'll need to have at least a PC around to run software that they don't make for mac.

i've got a couple softwares that they don't make for mac that i need on a daily basis.

TopbucksMatt 03-18-2010 03:40 PM

You'll love it, get a copy of fusion or parallels with windows 7 and you won't need anything else for some time.

MaDalton 03-18-2010 03:41 PM

win 7 works excellent on mac hardware - that's all i have to say :glugglug

clicker 03-18-2010 03:42 PM

Yep. PC's for office stuff and testing and MAC's for creativity.

potter 03-18-2010 03:43 PM

You don't want the $1,700 model. Get the quad-core, it starts at 1,999.

Gerco 03-18-2010 04:02 PM

Don't do it.

You'll fall in love with it, and become a fanboy who wonders why you didn't make the switch years ago. Don't put yourself though the grief of realizing all the years you have wasted on the PC.

Supz 03-18-2010 04:07 PM

If you can deal with the OS. They are fine. I couldn't

CYF 03-18-2010 04:47 PM

nice hardware, nice gui, and unix goodness underneath. Why wouldn't you switch?

GTS Mark 03-18-2010 05:33 PM

You will love it, i switched over in the fall and haven't looked back :)

gaffg 03-18-2010 05:36 PM

If you need to access windows from time to time:

http://www.virtualbox.org/

I like it over vmware

bDok 03-18-2010 06:06 PM

you should. with bootcamp if you need to do heavy duty lifting on pc side. Or vmware/etc. when you need to run pc stuff virtually.

hell with vmware you can image your current pc and have it booting with vmware fusion on your mac.

I'm a programmer. Got turned onto Mac by ex-business partner. He's a coder/engineer, said it was best thing since sliced bread.

Got meself a macbook after a shit-ass Vaio crashed.

At first just used it for shits and giggles, it was sitting next to my main big screen.

Then I got Coda (FTP, SSH, remote editor). And BBedit (local editor). And Navicat (remote SQL management).

And this thing has an actual shell built in. So it's like using a desktop version of Unix that doesn't give you grief every time you try to do something.

Fuck that Microsoft crap. I now only use my windows machine as a jukebox and to run bots coded in visual studio.

psili 03-18-2010 07:19 PM

My business partners use macs, and they sometimes bring up I need one; I'm using a PC running ubuntu, with three VirtualBoxes of windows for testing IE6, IE7 and IE8. If anyone can figure out how to realistically emulate those MS browsers in one install, I'd love to hear it.

However, I have never liked Apple, other than the Apple IIe, which rawked. Safari sucks. iTunes sucks. The fucking "shiney" marketing sucks (but works with the trendy / moron crowd. The only Mac users I like, or trust, are those who don't constantly get all giddy when an apple drops from a tree of conversation.

If you go to Mac, please don't turn into some "I love my mac" person.

candyflip 03-18-2010 07:25 PM

Load OSX on your Mini 10v and test it out.

Hahaha. I saw the pic of your mini dell running osx next to a starbucks cup. That was precious. I might try it at some point on the mini, but my main laptop's not switching anytime soon. I'm a stubborn bastard, and just see no reason to switch and get used to a new OS.

So I guess, go forth switchers to apple and have fun.

I run Hackintosh PCs next to Mac Pro desktops and you can't tell the difference.

The Dell Mini 9 and 10v are the absolute easiest to install OSX on. Run a boot disc in your DVD drive and then install as if it were an Apple product.

It's more than a novelty now.

slayer69 03-18-2010 08:14 PM

do it up!

NickB. 03-18-2010 08:30 PM

That's expensive. That could be 2 months worth of rent.

Godsmack 03-18-2010 11:46 PM

Do it Fris.. you're a man of perfection so i am sure you will love OSX and offcoz the beautiful hardware Apple makes..
I just ordered the 27 i7 iMac to replace my 24...

:thumbsup

mgtarheels 03-18-2010 11:50 PM

Bad idea.

Bman 03-18-2010 11:56 PM

Just a computer..rather spend the money on a holiday or an investment.

martinsc 03-19-2010 12:00 AM

this. I did the same.

I got Vmware Fusion (don't go with parallels - it's shit) to run a coupla programs you can't get on mac... that asides you're set.

I will never buy another pc :2 cents: and this coming from someone who used them every damn day for over 15 years.

well my current system is an core i7 960, with 16 gigs of ram, windows 7 ultimate, runs great, just imac looks cool

tranza 03-19-2010 10:01 AM

I would do it.

digitaldivas 03-19-2010 10:07 AM

Get it Fris, Geeeet Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit! Macs are rock fucking solid!

JasonB 03-19-2010 10:11 AM

Do it fris. You will love it. But I would max it out. I started with 2+ years ago & never looked back. I bought parallels thinking I would need PC every now & then, but the only thing I really use it for is to make sure pages look ok on IE. There's nothing a PC can do that I can't do (EASIER) on my macbook.

BestXXXPorn 03-19-2010 10:26 AM

Go ahead, grab a mac, you'll love it for a while because it's all new and shiny then realize that Apple doesn't know how to write software, all their apps suck, it only does about 80% of what you want it to with no options to make it do what you want...

I have an 8 core mac pro and a mac book pro... I also have Windows machines and I run Linux for all my servers...

Mac sucks, sorry fan boys... the thing they do best is form factor and they are GODS at form factor. Nobody touches them, IMO... However, functionality wise... way too limiting. The amount of apps is much smaller, their feature sets are smaller, and don't even THINK about running Adobe Suites on mac they fucking suck. Adobe can't program a native app to save their life. Everything runs way way way faster on a PC (adobe wise)... even with near identical hardware Windows smacks it down. This isn't Apple's fault at all, this is just Adobe being teh suck...

So yeah, switch if you want to! There's really no benefit... I can't stand the way OS X places (still) the bar at the top of ONE of your monitors... I run 2 30s on my OS X box so if I want to access a menu sometimes I have to mouse all the way over to the other monitor up to the top... may be a little thing but it annoys the shit out of me, I like my controls to be attached to the window, not the desktop (causing it to change every time you change apps)... that's lame... With more and more people using multiple monitor setups this UI decision is outdated. However it's part of the Mac "core philosophy" so...

Any way that's my two cents... iWork sucks, it's a half ass Office and you'll want Office anyway since real businesses use DOC, XLS, etc... so yeah, you'll need to buy all new licenses for anything you use regularly. Don't even bother with open office or one of those free ones, they're HORRIBLE...

Joxxy 03-19-2010 10:31 AM

I use both frequently. It's like having two amazing girlfriends who both do amazing things. But I always go with the girlfriend that's cheaper. PC by a neck.

james_clickmemedia 03-19-2010 10:34 AM

I made the switch and would not go back. Have parallels installed for when I have to use Quickbooks.

Well OSX is a UNIX system, you can customize your shell to infinity. Also, I do agree that mac apps do pretty much suck. I have never had a problem running Adobe... anything. Remember, Adobe was funded by Apple when they started and the love affair will mos def continue. As for your word processing, have you looked into NeoOffice?
Maybe that will help you http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php It's FREE btw.
