What is the big problem with FIREFOX

It sucks up all of the memory in the world, insists on starting in safe mode every time, and it fucking sucks now. It use to be fast and solid.

BVF 10-18-2009 09:05 AM

I quit firefox around a year ago after it decided to stop working....Now it works, fuck em.

SpyCam 10-18-2009 09:05 AM

you should get a decent box man, stop using 10 yo computers

Chosen 10-18-2009 09:11 AM

Opera rocks :thumbsup

PXN 10-18-2009 09:12 AM

When I updated to the latest version it get so slow, so I switch to chrome now.

MrMaxwell 10-18-2009 09:22 AM

I updated to the latest version, the new engine, it got FAST
Now it sucks.
Oh well.

The box ain't ten years old.. it is old.. but it's dual xeon.. been down to one proc for a few days, got a good friend looking for either a replacement for me or a better board with newer procs

This thing is pretty old - worst part is 533 bus .. but with two 2.4 HT xeons it's good enough.. Getting an 800mhz board and 3.4 xeons with twice the cache will make a big difference
Also my scsi drives aren't big enough

PiffStenis 10-18-2009 09:45 AM

I find firefox slows down after a few updates. I do clean installs for the major updates (like 3 to 3.5) and it keeps working fine for me.

Yeah, I forgot I could export bookmarks .. so that may be viable for me

leakapic 10-18-2009 10:09 AM

it will consume your high memory

Oh really
Well I wouldn't want my high memory being consumed to result in high consumption of memory .. I mean, get real, and stuff .. !!

Thanks for the advice... I just did this, exported my bookmarks, grabbed the plugin Password Exporter and exported, then imported my User-Passwords, put my other plugins and bookmarks back..

And honestly, it's like 100% faster. Thanks again.

Edit: my Firefox was the same version as the one I downloaded... but the FF icon and the browser toolbars are thinner now. So for sure deleting ff and reinstalling it, makes a huge difference.

Zyzz 10-18-2009 10:21 AM

Working very slow for me, using around 500 mb of memory, i'm running 20 + addons and sometimes the entire os freezes for few seconds, i also have 2000 + bookmarks. If it were not for the addons i will be using Googe Chrome 4.0, runs so much faster.

MrMaxwell 10-18-2009 10:23 AM

Yeah
Fucking IE runs so horribly slow, it's not usable,
I'm using Chrome for now till I get time to piss with FF

Yngwie 10-18-2009 10:29 AM

I downgraded to FF 3.0,14. That version works just fine. 3.5 kept crashing.

Killswitch - BANNED FOR LIFE 10-18-2009 10:30 AM

Stop being a pussy bitch, I ran FF since it's first release on a WinXP system with only 512mb of RAM with no problems what so ever...

ContentPimp 10-18-2009 10:35 AM

its definitely a memory hog!

Agreed though

MrMaxwell 10-18-2009 02:08 PM

Jakez 10-18-2009 02:21 PM

How do you go back to the 3.0 without losing any bookmarks/password/etc?

sandman! 10-18-2009 02:22 PM

Its your 20+ add ons that makes it slow as shit i used to run a ton of plugins also now i only run around 5 or so and firefox is a alot quicker.

I would be happy camper if their sorted the memory leaks...minus that i like it (paired with the plug-ins I use).

Firefox users are like mac users. Crap breaks all the time but no one admits it.
firefox sucks, and it is not immune to being hijacked like everyone thinks. It's almost as vulnerable as ie. I think firefox is used by 50% of people. Therefore, by it's sheer popularity it is in the crosshairs of hackers. If mac had more users it would be just as exploitable too. By why write a virus for something that is 5-7% of the market.
People talk about their favorite OS's, & browsers like they talk about their favorite teams-with extreme bias.

I use FF exclusively and up until last week ran it on 512MB of RAM without a single issue, nothing broke, nothing went wrong, sure after a week of constant use I had to close it down and reopen it because of the memory issue, but that's been highlighted...

I swear by Macs, but unfortunately my main machine is running Windows XP SP 2.

People talk trash about Mac OSX like it's their favorite teams rivals with extreme bias, but have yet to use the damn operating system for longer than a few minutes tinkering with it.

There are many people on this board who were extreme users of Windows based machines and have happily switched to OSX and haven't looked back.. Why? They are open to trying something else.

Most Windows users are happy with the crashing and having to restart, so they are close minded about actually giving OSX a proper trial before jumping to conclusions.

I copied my profile just is case something happened to it... uninstalled 3.5 and then installed 3.0.14 in it's place. Profile including bookmarks and passwords was still there. Make sure to disable automatic upgrades.

istanboys 10-18-2009 04:24 PM

I gotta check out Chrome some time soon. FF is annoying me lately.

Funny you say that. I do use a mac. I have plenty of PC's too. I have 3 macs also. The mac book pro, a power mac with dual cores and a power mac with dual quads. I need to figure out final cut and give that a whirl, but vegas for video works just fine on a pc.

fatfoo 10-18-2009 04:50 PM

Firefox sucks up too much memory, eh. That sucks.

Final cut is very easy to learn, its even easier to learn than vegas, and its a lot better and more user friendly. I don't have a working mac at home, but I have access to Mac's at school and the studio I sometimes work at. They're so much nicer to use than PCs. I also work part time in IT for my school, and I hope to get a couple free G4s this winter. They threw away a bunch of perfect macs last year, they still had the programs on them and everything! My friend said he found them in the dumpster. Ever since I heard about that; I am constantly keeping tabs on what gets thrown away, you never know when you might find something good. :thumbsup

Firefox does not crash as much as IE and its way more secure. Also firefox uses up a lot of memory only when its been running for hours on end, with multiple tabs. And even if firefox does crash, it restores your tabs for you.

I've been using firefox for years and I swear by it. I will say though, I upgraded to 3.5 and I do not like it as much as 3. When I had 3.0, I had it set where I could delete my cookies automatically after it closes, I can't find that option on 3.5. If I want to, I have to click "start private browsing" now.

StuartD 10-19-2009 06:16 AM

If you find that Firefox is a memory hog, chances are you have an extension that isn't playing nicely with it, or your profile has become corrupted... or a combination of the two.

A fresh install will work wonders and then begin adding extensions one at a time to make sure you can monitor their performance.

If you have to, use xmarks or simply copy your bookmarks.html files to ensure you keep information you need from one installation to the next. Fresh installs take very little time and upgrading from 2 to 3 to 3.5 and then complaining about the speed is silly. That's like going from win98 to winxp to windows 7 and wondering why it's having issues.

buyandsell 10-19-2009 07:11 AM

grab a copy of 3.0.* while you can and set it not to update itself
it will install over the latest version and you won't lose anything

I backdated all mine 3.5 is a POS

cykoe6 10-19-2009 07:15 AM

I refuse to use Chrome but I cannot stand FF using 1GB of memory. Even on a fast machine it causes problems. I guess I will give opera a try but I am sort of addicted to my plugins.

SuzzyQ 10-19-2009 07:30 AM

I sware by FF and its only using 160k. I dont see how all of you have all these problems.

CyberHustler 10-19-2009 07:32 AM

When I scroll up too fast the browser closes itself...

Horny Dude 10-19-2009 09:50 AM

I use to be a big FF fan, but after the last update it has been slow. Now I use Chrome all the time. I use FF only to use a few of the extensions for developers.
