Questions for those of you who smoke cigarettes.
What made you start?
Why do you continue? Do you care how it affects others? Do you continue to smoke when you have respiratory problems caused by a cold or something along those lines? In case you're interested, this is why I'm asking: If I'm sitting in traffic and the person 3 cars ahead of me is smoking, with their window up, I can still smell it. I've had a cough for about a month now which makes me even more aware of the smokers around me, whether they are smoking at the time or not. While Christmas shopping, I encountered MANY people standing directly outside of the stores puffing away. As a non-smoker, I find this beyond rude and I can't help but wonder if the average smoker is oblivious to how their habit impacts people like me. Just curious. |
I sure its the same feeling over weight people have.
You are full but can not stop eating. Your pants and shirts do not fit and people are uncomfotable but yet they keep eating. People make fun of them as they are fat but people keep eating. Heart starts to go but they still love the food. People warn them every day " Hey dude your fat go on a diet" Same thing to me it sucks man cant shake the tababco now for 22 years quit for a few here and there but would think its the same feelings. Long Time No see :winkwink: |
Quote:
Please tell me how a fat person affects the health of those around them. |
I've yet to be eating a cheese burger and have some non fat person start wheezing and coughing uncontrollably.
However...Should that ever occur, I will gladly put the cheese burger down until the non fatty has removed themselves from the area. |

What made you start? Peer Pressure in high scool at age of 17 Why do you continue? i am weak and addicted Do you care how it affects others? Yes, i try to when in public have my own spot to not bother non smokers Do you continue to smoke when you have respiratory problems caused by a cold or something along those lines? yes but not as much , the addiction is very bad for me |
Long ago.
Because It's an addiction. No. Yes. |
I started at 17 & I quit smoking 10 months ago... and i think that's the best decision of the year.
nb: now i need a cigarette!! |
yea people dont care... not everyone has a dis-regard for others, but enough to be impacted, yes...
What gets me is a mini van full of kids and the mom is up front puffing away... Thats pisses me off... I grew up with it in my household... it dosnt bother me, probably only because i was raised within a cloud of smoke... meaning my parents smoked in the house in my early years... since then, my mother has quit ... and i dont live around it anymore... since neither I nor my girlfriend smoke... Addictions overcome people's consideration.... |
What's funny about this debate is the government and companies have made a fortune off of getting people addicted and now everyone bitches about it that doesn't smoke.
It's not like people smoke to intentionally irritate people, it's more irritating to be made to feel like a leper because you were taken avantage of at an impressionable age. People treat smokers worse than they treat drug addicts and that's all it is another addiction |
Chicks dig smokers and Dr's prefer Camels .......

I often wonder if people who smoke have ever lost a close relative to lung cancer. I have, and could never start smoking as a result. I mean, they look terrible, like death. You'll see them age dramatically in a matter of a few short months after diagnosis. When it comes, there is no going back. Lung cancer has a horrible survival rate, not to mention emphyzema from smoking. It is terrible.
Good luck to anyone making a change for the better and quitting. |

Do the words "Free will" mean anything to you? Perhaps you should accept responsibility for your own actions instead of trying to blame others. Your first post specifically said you don't care how it affects others, then you post that it bothers you when people make you feel like a leper. IF you don't care about me, why should I care about you? |
Well I guess if you really look at it there really could be a lot of effects on the people around someone who is heavy.
Well first of all I have seen that a lot of house holds who have heavy parents have tons of junk food and crap in the house that other loved ones should not eat but they feed the kids tons of crap and end up with over weight children. Sad to say but true. I have many friends who are over weight and every time we go out some where they are forcing me to sit down in pizza shops or stop at fudge factory and eat eat eat. I use self control and go out side alone and smoke or have a nice dip. When you have a heavy friend they do not like to go running, biking, hunting, etc witch for those around them could cause a lack in activity's and allow them to gain weight. Also have you ever spoken to a skinny women who is married to a heavy man. They will tell you over and over every time they fuck she is scared of her ribs breaking or not being able to breath enough to make it out of it. They are both addictions smoking smells yes and the air is not good for those around them thats why I do not smoke around people. People who eat bad can definitely effect those around them in other ways though. Its is also as hard for a smoker to quiet as a heavy person to start and finish a diet. |

i know i'd prefer to be locked in a room with someone smoking as opposed to someone running a car engine. of course you choose to drive it's your choice, just as it is for smokers. |
What made you start? Stress and I wish I never would have.
Why do you continue? Addiction, lame excuse, but it's true. I've slowed down a lot. Do you care how it affects others? Honestly, not really. But I have NEVER been rude about smoking. (ie: blowing smoke in other people's faces. But if someone has a problem with me smoking 3 cars in front of them with my window up. Fuck 'em. Do you continue to smoke when you have respiratory problems caused by a cold or something along those lines? No, I haven't smoked a cig in 4-5 days because i've been sick. |

They call it free will because they know everyone has some kind of vice or addiction and they created that phrase to appease their own sense of guilt at the results of what they do. If free will were real, advertisers wouldn't pay millions and billions of dollars to sell you crap you don't need. And those things aren't even physical addicitions. Usually if something is free, you'll discover it costs way too much in the long run. |

I don't need nicotine or arsenic in my system just cause someone else is addicted and needs a fix in public. |
If you are outside and have a problem with me smoking then move.
If I am inside then just ask and I will put it out. |

I don't know how long you have been back around but welcome back. |

Though I still to this day think it should be a business owners choice to be smoke free or not and not that of the public vote via state law. Quote:

Why do you care about inhailing a tiny amount of cig smoke as you walk by a door? Shit, look at your the exhaust pipe on your car next time its cold. Look at how many cars and driving around you. Does that hurt your health?
There's bigger things to worry about.. lighten up edit: fuck i drank a bottle of wine so typos galore |

Not sure what we're comparing here and where all your respect for crackheads is coming from. |

If you drive anything but the most economical car you can afford then shut the fuck up. :2 cents: |
I smoke newports but sometimes even I don't want to smell that shit....It must be terrible for people who don't smoke...
Smoking right outside the doors is some bullshit...I shouldn't have to breathe in somebody elses smoke just because I want to walk into a building...Plus people walking in and out just brings smoke into the lobby... smoking should be done in the back or the side of buildings where there is no foot traffic...When I was in Navy training school, they had a "smoke deck", which was a spot in the BACK of the main building and you could go there and smoke away... It helps keep smoke away from non-smokers and an added benefit is that "smoke decks" create a wonderful atmosphere of comraderie with fellow smokers who also want to kill themselves slowly.... Atlanta airport has a smoke room INSIDE the airport right off of one of the main corridors and you can't smell anything outside of it...So things can be done.... If I owned a bar in an area that didn't allow indoor smoking, I'd build a deck on the back of the bar with benches and tables and when it got cold outside, I'd have a forced air heater outside for the smokers...I'd make a KILLING.... |

although I think all drugs and smoking should be legal. Just in the privacy of your own home type of thing. |
honestly the average smoker does not care.
im sick and tired of the goverment telling people what they can and cant do on private property. that being said IL is going smoke free on the 1st |

I just couldn't resist this thread because everyone is all against smokers despite the fact that tobacco built the American government. I don't blow smoke in people's faces, but I'm not moving my seat because some old hag starts coughing that sat down after I was already sitting there or something. |
Tobacco built the American government? :1orglaugh
That sounds like the best pro smoking argument topic I've ever heard. Must be killer, literally. :1orglaugh |

Right now other drugs are creating other governments in South America. This is pretty basic knowledge, but you can do some research. It's not just consipracy theory stuff. This is pretty much history recorded. |
I've been trying to get a family member to quit. I wish this thread had some insight. But it seems like someone addicted to smoking just won't quit unless they want to make a change in their life. I've tried books, print outs, hours of discussion of the facts. No affect. Its really fucked up, and I hope they never get ill from smoking because family is going to be really upset. But the odds are not good. Its like watching someone slowly commit suicide, when they get old and ill and still smoke.
|
I can't believe I clicked into this thread after getting back from the store after six months of not smoking and I broke down and bought a pack.
Fuck! What a drag? I smoked two right away. It sucks and basically, I'm a fool. It's just so fitting that this was the first thread I saw after doing that. I smoked outside but I can still smell the smoke on me even though I took off the jacket and pants I had on. I'm totaly disgusted with myself and at the same time I'm "dying" to light up another one. Sucks. |

No one quits anything unless they really really want to or they bottom out like an alcoholic does. In a way cigarettes are worse because unless you're athletic, nothing really makes you want to quit until you can't breath anymore. Or you have a family and start worrying about them or something I guess |
If you really want to stop ?

It took a lot more than tobacco to build the government, that's all. And yeah the civil war was over industry, not slavery. I live in the south, I am aware of the facts. Amazingly, people down here still think it had to do with slavery too. |
Around 5.4 million deaths a year are caused by tobacco.
* Smoking is set to kill 6.5 million people in 2015 and 8.3 million humans in 2030, with the biggest rise in low-and middle-income countries. * Every 6.5 seconds a current or former smoker dies, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). ○ 1.2 million people in China die because of smoking each year. That's 2,000 people a day. http://www.inforesearchlab.com/smokingdeaths.chtml Bunch of fucking idiots. |
