It took a lot more than tobacco to build the government, that's all.

And yeah the civil war was over industry, not slavery. I live in the south, I am aware of the facts. Amazingly, people down here still think it had to do with slavery too.

Industry was tobacco in the south, maybe a couple other things but that was one of the major industries.

No one quits anything unless they really really want to or they bottom out like an alcoholic does. In a way cigarettes are worse because unless you're athletic, nothing really makes you want to quit until you can't breath anymore.

Or you have a family and start worrying about them or something I guess

I'm going on 3 years sober from drinking and partying several times a week for 10+ years, through my twenties. I know how addicts are, I know. I've had to give up and quit a lot of things and make hard choices to be healthy.

I work at the airport and the question i get asked most on a daily basis is "Is there an area somewhere where i can smoke!!!!!" You should see these scum bag fucks. They look like shit. Shaking and all fidgety and nervous. Then you point them in the right direction and they either run or walk fast because they think running will make them look dumb. My favorite is the losers who sit there with a 16oz cup of starbucks and a pack of smokes. If lung cancer doesnt do it, heart disease will. I just dont see how someone can do something like that KNOWING they WILL DIE from it. There is no, might die or maybe wont blah blah. You smoke and you die, simple. Sure it takes years but mother fuck. I burn a blunt here and there and it makes me feel guilty but at least its not gonna put me in the dirt. I cant see how some of these people smoke one after another after another after another. Even when they're pregnant or dying.

* Smoking is set to kill 6.5 million people in 2015 and 8.3 million humans in 2030, with the biggest rise in low-and middle-income countries.
* Every 6.5 seconds a current or former smoker dies, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

○ 1.2 million people in China die because of smoking each year. That's 2,000 people a day.

http://www.inforesearchlab.com/smokingdeaths.chtml

Bunch of fucking idiots.

Actually the thing wrong with statistics is they can be manipulated or rather the experiments themselves actually are now manipulated to get the exact results you want. the pharmasuetical companies do it to get products past the FDA now.

I'm not saying those stats are 100% accurate; I'm just saying you could get them even if they weren't if that was your goal. I have no doubt lots of people are catching all kinds of things from cigarettes.

Also from the way our food is processed, the pollution in the atmosphere, living too close to power plants and other types of factories and such, etc., etc. etc.

My scum of the earth step mother was diagnosed with some extremely rare form of cancer. There were only a little over 2k recorded cases of it so the Dr's really weren't too sure about her. She continued smoking the whole time...my family had fund raisers for her and she would sit out there with a scarf on her bald head while burning away. Then the bitch beat it, 5 years later she's still clear but Dr's told her she would more than likely never ever ever be able to have children. That was hard for her to deal with being only like 28 years old. My dad ends up busting one lucky nut in her and what does the skank do? :pimp U guessed it. Baby was born premature as fuck and had allllllll kinds of health problems. http://imagecache2.allposters.com/im...te-Posters.jpg

Reduces anxiety caused by nicotine withdrawal maybe. Smoking constricts blood vessels which restricts blood flow to your important shit. I dont claim to be a medical expert by any means, im just some GFY loser but i think my heart rate being 50beats per minute makes me a LOT less anxious than it being 100. :2 cents:

In case you're interested, this is why I'm asking:

If I'm sitting in traffic and the person 3 cars ahead of me is smoking, with their window up, I can still smell it.

I've had a cough for about a month now which makes me even more aware of the smokers around me, whether they are smoking at the time or not. While Christmas shopping, I encountered MANY people standing directly outside of the stores puffing away. As a non-smoker, I find this beyond rude and I can't help but wonder if the average smoker is oblivious to how their habit impacts people like me.

Just curious.

Ever thought that perhaps people get sick and tired of your obnoxious personality?

Why do you continue?

Do you care how it affects others?

Do you continue to be an obnoxious prick when you have respiratory problems caused by a cold or something along those lines?

In the black neighborhoods I've been to (and it's been MANY), most neighborhood stores you can get three long newports for $1 It's a GREAT way to moderate your smoking.

Missy 12-29-2007 08:16 PM

I can't remember why I started smoking when I was younger, but the reason I started again last year is stress. For me, that's the only benefit of smoking: it's is an excellent stress reliever. And as I get older and less willing to partake in other "vices", I find myself more inclined to pick up a cigarette when I feel the need for a "something". But I am constantly telling myself that I need to quit again; it's just that the need for a vice outweighs logic sometimes.

However... even as a smoker, I do love the fact that bars, restaurants, etc. have become smoke-free environments. Also, being in CA, it seems that just about every public socializing establishment has it's own smoking area, completely seperate from the main areas so to limit the effects on non-smokers. Other states adopting the no-smoking policies should follow suit. I recently spent a few months in Washington (also a non-smoking state), and designated smoking areas in WA seem to be the exception rather than the norm. I suspect that OR is the same in it's lack of smoking areas? I think that if more businesses designate areas for smokers to hang out away from non-smokers, it would eliminate some of the crass-ness you are referring to.

Another thing about people smoking right in front of business entrances, etc... I have noticed that most places like grocery stores, shopping centers, movie theaters, all put their ashtrays right in front of the entrance doors. Smokers naturally gravitate toward the ashtrays when they are out getting their fix. I think that if stores and other such businesses would put their ashtrays off to the side, that would help eliminate some of the effects on other customers. Of course, it would also result in more litter because some people are just too damn lazy to walk the extra 30 feet to use an ashtray or garbage can. And face it... people like that are going to fuck things up for everybody else no matter what rules or facilities are in place for them. Those are the people who just don't give a crap about anybody else but themselves, whether it comes to smoking, driving, talking on cell phones in movie theaters... whatever. There are always going to be some people that you can never please no matter what, so there's no use trying.

Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that I think a lot of smokers felt alienated when these laws started popping up. They get kicked out of their environmnent, are forced outside and often not given a seperate area to do their dirty work, and people are still bitching. I mean face it, non-smokers as a whole are not going to be entirely happy until they have passed laws confining smoking to inside people's own homes and nowhere else. I think it's caused a much more "in your face" attitude from smokers than before these laws started happening. And I know it's not the responsibility of businesses to cater to smokers, but I think that if more did, there would be much less clash between smokers and non.

As a recent quitter.. some 6 months now... I've got to say I had a junkie mentality about how it affected other people. They didn't understand my need/desire/right to smoke, so I didn't give a crap about them unless they were rude enough to say something...

I did feel badly about how it affected my kids.. now that I'm free things are a lot differently

I do not even know why people pretend to care one way or the other about smoking...

Fact:
Living in populated area's is nearly the same as smoking.
You drive on the roads alot? You are basically smoking.
You live day to day exposed to numerous toxins, germs, in a world that is prone to accidents and murder.

All you people are going to to die.
One way or another.

Cancer, Heart Deisease, some way one way or another your going to die.

Once you got the idea that your time will come...
Smoking is the least of the things to worry about.

Come to grips with your own death...
Accept it.

Light up and say fuck it.
Cuz shit dont matter anyways. We're all dead.

Being afraid of death just makes you a sniveler to people that live life.

Some people truly dont want to live and its a way to kill yourself faster. For some old age is more fearful. People know that its going to kill them, who cares what others do?

moneybiz 12-29-2007 10:03 PM

Most people that work labor jobs know this.

You don't smoke and you've had a cough for about a month? Hmmm. Time to go see the doctor.

I started smoking when I was about fourteen or so. No idea why I started; Maybe it was peer pressure or just the thrill of doing something "bad".

Why do I continue? I enjoy it?

Do you continue to smoke when you have respiratory problems caused by a cold or something along those lines? I very rarely get sick.

I quit smoking for about two months and I was okay with it. I started back up over the Christmas break. I promised my wife I would quit for the new year, and I'm back to no smoking again.

I must admit that while I wasn't smoking, people who were smoking bothered me. To a non smoker - even someone who just quit - the stuff reeks.

I used to smoke for many years untill my friend got lung cancer at the age of 25.

Socks 12-29-2007 10:26 PM

My best friend sounds like he's going to puke a lung every time he coughs, which is about 30-40 times a day. He's 28, and smokes weed and cigarettes all the time. Sometimes I can hear him 50 feet away down the hall of our apartment building loud and clear his cough is so loud.

He doesn't even get it checked.

tony286 12-29-2007 10:27 PM

I never smoked cigarettes and cigarette smoke never bothered me. As far as quitting dont know if it makes a different my father gave up smoking 18 yrs ago.Now he has stage 4 lung cancer.

wow... this is the first post of you that i agree with... walking on the street is even more unhealthy than smoking - thats a proven fact. I think the people complaining about smoking are kinda funny. Like the people working in bars who complain about the smoke: Why the fuck did you get that job then? Those fucks unleashed the discussion and eventually the banning of smoking in bars here in a few months. Not the custumors, no, just a handful of employees.... unbelievable. Bars are places to unwind, but in a few months it will be another place where borders are being raised, i fucking hate it. Relaxing doesnt work when you have to think about the 2 or 3 whiny bitches that unchained the non smoking shit. I want to relax in a bar with a cig and a bacardi like our ancenstors have done several thousands of years long, and now it gets taken away. Long live the police state....
