Ear Wax Candles....anyone Ever Try...

Hey,

has anyone ever tried those candles that claim to clean out your ears? went to a spa today to get a gift card for my girlfriends best friends birthday and saw this....does it actually work?

princess 02-22-2007 04:32 PM

this is the first I've heard of them. lol

Lebron James 02-22-2007 04:32 PM

I thought you are supposed to remove wax from your ears ... not add it.

EroticyChrissy 02-22-2007 04:32 PM

Yuck I have never tried it. I hope I don't. And I always look at my partners ears b4 i kiss em.

Sick Bastard 02-22-2007 04:33 PM

I always have a shitload of wax in my ears (from playing drums so much??), and have always wanted to try that. But I looked online and saw it's pretty much fake and impossible. Google dat shit and see what I mean.

I also know my old Italian relatives swear by them working, but they're all bonkers anyways....

Silly Guy 02-22-2007 04:33 PM

i have honestly never put candles in my ears

Scott McD 02-22-2007 04:34 PM

Never heard of it before.

People will buy into any shit though...

Jace 02-22-2007 04:35 PM

I do it once a month, religiously

it helps more than any doctor or drops ever did

StuartD 02-22-2007 04:37 PM

Yup, they work wonders... don't knock it. It seems weird, but it really truly works.

what are the benefits?

L-Pink 02-22-2007 04:37 PM

I thought you meant candles made out of ear-wax. :Oh crap

jacked 02-22-2007 04:38 PM

it really works the candles create a vacuum and suck the ear wax out of your ear and into the tip of the candle. you'd be suprised if you've never had your ears cleaned by a doctor, how much wax builds up in your ears, when your done using the candles crack the bottom open and you'll see the yellow/orange hardened blob of ear wax.

they work really well, you'll notice an improvement in your hearing as soon as your done.

they sell them here at a homeopathic store for $1.99 each

MaDalton 02-22-2007 04:39 PM

it's bullshit - and i know cause i worked for a company that sold them

this article says it all: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ear_candling

:2 cents:

Being Italian and learning it from my old Italian relatives, I've done it a bunch of times and it really seems to work. It's just a bit worrisome having a flaming cone sticking out of your ear, so have someone you trust with you and not some drunk college buddy.

I think they are illegal to sell in some states.

yeah it's a good idea to have someone there to monitor how low the flame is to your head and also to make sure nothing happens. i usually cut a whole in a paper plate and stick the candle through the hole so in case of anything dripping or a piece of the flaming cone drops down, you don't get burned.

Miss Tera 02-22-2007 04:48 PM

I have used them multiple times, it really seems to work, oh well if it was a placeblo type thing and faked me out, I thought it worked!

You can see the ear wax in the tip when you are finished, fun for the whole family!

Sound painful..

donkevlar 02-22-2007 05:33 PM

Don't Candle!!! It works, but it can be dangerous and it isn't nearly effective as this:

All you have to do is put ear wax softener or even just cooking oil in your ears. Let it sit. And go to the nurse. They flush it out with warm water.

It feels a bit weird but it doesn't hurt or anything. A grape sized chunk came out of my ear and I could hear WAY better. I bought myself an ear syringe and I do it myself now.

Just make sure you don't have an ear infection, I heard you can damage your shit if you clean them while infected.

uno 02-22-2007 05:36 PM

A lil bit of hydrogen peroxide in the ears helps clean em out too. Just leave it in till it stops bubbling and popping, then q-tip to your hearts content.

that may work on some people, but not those that actually need to candling....plus, I have to do it once a month, i am not paying a nurse to do what you said once a month when I candle takes 10 minutes and works perfectly

wax softener just clogs me up more, olive oil does absolutely nothing for me

NEVER use hydrogen peroxide

Quote:

Patients should know that rinsing the ear canal with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) results in oxygen bubbling off and water being left behind-wet, warm ear canals make good incubators for growth of bacteria.

Tried it a few years ago...did nothing for me, but then I know people who swear by them. The one good things is they're cheap so you've got nothing to lose but a few bucks.

A moth flew into in my ear (yep, a tiny one but imagine the flapping wings) the night before my grandma's funeral. I put oil in to kill it, the next day my ear was swollen almost shut, went to the doctor after the funeral. Have you ever seen what they use to clean out your ears? It was like this giant metal syringe thing that looked like a cake decorator on steroids. I can't even explain how painful the washing out was but the Doctor pointed out all the built up wax that also came out. And my hearing was a lot better for a while.

Sick Bastard 02-22-2007 06:10 PM

from what I remember reading(and that wiki article aforementioned prob mentions this too) no way burning a candle could A)create THAT MUCH suction to suck wax out of your ear, and, B)safely warm you inner ear enough to soften the wax to enable it's removal.
And the crud you see at the end of a burn is just melted candle.

But hey, if it feels good, do it. But it prob isn't doing what you thought it was.

I used to do drunked peroxide in the ear at college though. Now that was fun!
Bubbly, oozy CRUD! YUM!

You are so fucking lucky that the moth didn?t crawl in further. My father once had a beetle land in his ear. It crawled in further and started to rub up against his eardrum. Needless to say he started acting like a complete madman, I thought he was having a heart attack. He started slamming his head against the walls, punching the side of his head with his own fist. This is the kind of person that got his teeth pulled without any anesthetic, the kind of person who got shot in the knee and went to work the next day. The kind of person that drank hot coffee straight from the fucking coffee maker. My brother drove him to the hospital and they pulled out the bug, it made a huge ?PLOP? sound. It was amazing that a little beetle was able to cause so much pain.

You should have held a flashlight up to your other ear, the moth would have flown toward it and out ... :1orglaugh
