Whats Better Pc Vs Mac
 

I have used a pc all my life. I want to buy a Mac pro computer becouse there are some nice video and photo editing softwares that will not work on windows.

Which do you think is better and why? Is there a big learning curve for mac?

I grew up with PCs - when I switched to mac last march, all I could say was "omfg - computers 2.0!" It honestly took about a month to get used to it - but os x just ends up making sooo much sense. I did re-map my keyboard though. Overall, i'd say do it - you'll only thank yourself... there are 0 downsides to mac.

The only mac i will ever buy is a Big Mac.

if the cost wasnt so high to get in at my level ,I would do it . If I learned final cut pro at the same level I know vegas. I could make a good chunk doing mainstream editing.

As much as people like to compare the two, I still think they're two different things and have two different purposes. Do your research based on what you'll be using it primarily for and make a decision after that.

haha good point. but i have always found that the only thing macs are better for is photo/video editing. And of course as most people know there arent many viruses made for macs. But yeah thats my little scoop

i do photo and webdesign and there are better apps for mac for those purposes

I don't agree - a user's workflow is much more streamlined on a Mac.

Take the simple shit called labels. From opening up a new finder window, I can find what document I'm working on within a matter of seconds, nomatter how deep just from following labels.

Take automator - without knowing any programming language I can create a custom workflow or take one of the hundreds of premade ones to one unlimited actions on my OS

Take applescript - I can create shit easy scripts to open any file I edited on 31 January, 1984 or create custom menus for current projects (an excellent feature)

Take smart folders - without moving files around or manually creating alisases, I can group all my current documents in one folder, I can stick any php file edited in the last week in a single folder etc etc

The Mac isn't more powerful than Windows, it just makes your life easier.

I've been using windows for 10 years. But based on what I've heard, I might switch to mac soon.

What in the world makes you think a mac is required for mainstream editing? FCP is very close to Adobe Premiere Pro. In fact the guy that made it left Adobe to do so.

It's very useful.

Applescript is one of those somewhat hidden gems of OSX. It short, it provides 'hooks' into many of your programs (e.g., Photoshop, TextEdit, QuickTime Player, iPhoto, iTunes, etc...) and is isanely useful. Between Automator and Applescript, you can minimize the amount of time doing repetitious/tedious tasks.

Also, why hasn't anyone mentioned Spotlight, or QuickSilver?

You dont know what your talking about, for mainstream they ask for two programs final cut pro and avid. Almost no asks for vegas or PPro.

Haha ya someone told me that back in the late 90's that I would switch to mac if I wanted to be able to keep recording demos... :uhoh lol Its now almost harder to find recording equip for macs than it is for pcs.

What 'development' are you referring to? C++ GUI Programming?

If you have one of the new Intel Apple computers, just boot it up in XP using Bootcamp (or use Parallels within OSX) and do your development in windows. Or you can boot in XP and see how IE7 looks with your design, or graphic 'development' appears to windows users.

Note: running XP doesn't involve emulation or any kludgy nonsense like that.

The photoshop automator script site is borking, but I'll definately check that out later.

Spotlight goes without saying - it's not an app, it's the OS, but hell yeah, it's absolutely fantastic. Realtime text searching even in image documents...

I use dashboard a lot as well - write my own little javascript apps to keep a check on my websites... how many new posts, new submits, server load, etc - very very simple, yet beautiful

And I fully agree on Applescript - my desktop is full of them to speed everything up.

I use windows but like macs too. The big reason I use windows--other than the price--is that it's easier to walk potential clients through sites, programs, etc. if we're both using the same platform. It's easy enough to get tripped up while communicating through different browser versions, to say nothing of browsers.

So if I'm pitching to someone green, someone who isn't remotely comfortable on a computer or online, odds are he's on Windows XP, and I can IM him the baby steps simply enough:

"Okay, so you see the big START button in the lower left corner of the screen...right, that one...click that...now..." etc.

If we were on two completely different platforms, the process would be unnerving--more frustrating for me and, more importantly, potentially more frustrating for the client.

Honestly, Macs and PCs do the same thing. Just how they do them is slightly different. I don't buy the whole mac is better for graphics thing, nor do I buy the whole windows is better for business thing.

I love my macs, I never ever say that about any of my PCs. I hate all the bullshit that comes with a windows PC nowadays, settings scattered throughout the OS, Pop up notification bubbles, activation, viruses, spyware, complicated dialog menus, drivers, security etc etc.

For me, the mac just feels better. I love using it, I love the hardware, I love the community, I love the software.

The difference is mac users love their macs and OS X, very rarely do you hear people say the same about Windows. Whatever you use is cool I guess.

I've seen a few Bill Gates interviews on TV recently, nearly everytime someone is asking him why Vista borrows so much from OS X and you can tell it's pissing him off
