Majority Americans Reject Evolution

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/...in965223.shtml

only 15% of Americans seem to believe in evolution, so my question as a European: What is wrong with the majority of your country men?

Most Americans that travel to Europe seem to be okay, I can't believe that the rest of the country has turned their backs to the last 200 years of scientific research. I mean are you guys really our religieus fundamentalist cousins?

In my home country, Belgium, 5% of the people go to search and everyone is asking themselves, who are those 5% :1orglaugh
I now live in Prague, Czech Republic, where 90% is flat out atheist or agnost, so this all seems to be so fundamentalist like say Saudi-Arabian / Iranian / Taliban.

Will the USA be renamed to US of AJ (United States of America for Jesus) soon?

or just Jesusland?

Sorry, but was very shocked by this

dig420 11-06-2005 01:35 PM

How do you think a clown like Bush got elected?

We're getting stupider every day.

buddyjuf 11-06-2005 01:46 PM

The states that vote republican are the states with the lowest IQ
The states that vote republican are mostly the states that supported slavery

Most americans are just plain... stupid

sorry... that poll is absolute bullshit. evolution is taught in schools... not creationism. most people feel the opposite imho.

that cant be right - how could only 15% believe in evolution?

surely the other 85% dont think the earth was formed by someone with a magic wand do they?

I agree with this.

TheMaster 11-06-2005 01:56 PM

full CBS poll:

God created humans in present form 51%
Humans evolved, God guided the process 30%
Humans evolved, God did not guide process 15%

so, that's only 15% who really believe in Darwinism

They haven't reached the level where they can believe in evolution. They can't believe in it if it hasn't happened to them. :1orglaugh

Azlord 11-06-2005 01:59 PM

Not me my friend. 100% evolution here.

why aren't people up in arms that ALL public schools teach their kids the opposite? there is just no way in hell this poll can be accurate.

the poll suggests that a bunch of whacko fucktards that believe in god and creationism dont care even though they find a way to try to push their morality and beliefs into every other aspect of our lives.. they somehow over looked the most obvious... that being what THEIR OWN children are taught in school.

would seem to me that if only 15% really believed in evolution, then it would not be taught in schools as fact.

:2 cents:

The big thing in America these days is "I believe in a creator but not the bible".

This poll reflects that.... if you actually READ the article it does not say that the majority of americans believe in jesus or the bible, just not evolution.

:thumbsup I mean getting more and more afraid for time where some of those born again wackjobs think they should have a crusade against that wicked old continent

because it seems to their beliefs that after the apocalyps, when millions of people will ascent to heaven, the power will again go to Europe, which by that time will be ruled by the anti-christ

Plus it would all matter on where the poll was taken too. If they go to a bible thumping area, yea you're gonna have a lot more bible believing idiots. I mean, people who don't believe in evolution, just don't take a hard look around. I'm 100% atheist and believe in a evolution since I first study it. To me religion is for the weak minded, and the ones that need to believe there is something after death.

Doctor Dre 11-06-2005 02:21 PM

That's more like 45 % ... including 30 % christians who beleive in science ...

There is no way to proove where it really started ... so people still beleive in god ;) and in evolution too...

I believe in evolution to the fullest. Evolution doesn't "dissprove" or deny the existence of God, but goes on to show that God's "master plan" is way more complex than anyone could ever imagine. You go God. lol

The US is a country full of "issues" - it's a preoccupation. It just a matter of getting over it and moving on to bigger stuff than the color of toilet paper.

There are far more relevant problems world wide than US "issues".

pornmonger 11-06-2005 02:32 PM

If you believe in evolution, you believe that spiders will evolve into cats, cats will evolve into horses, and monkeys will evolve into humans.

Evolution does exist only in species to better survive change not change into a different species. With the chopping of the Amazon, many chimps are being forced out of their habitat. If evolution was truly what it is, those chimps would evolve into humans to survive their habitat being destroyed. But..THEY DON'T!!!

WarChild 11-06-2005 02:36 PM

Chimps are still having babies, and yet none are having human babies. I wonder why that is? Things that make you go "hmmmm".

Strong case ya got there pornmonger! :winkwink: Wonder if the chimps can "evolve" quicker than the time it takes to chop down some trees?

Now.. how about thinking about the effects of chopping down the Amazon instead of pondering over the transformation of monkeys into humans? :winkwink:

I would love nothing more, but bullshit that starts in the US has the tendency to spread over the globe like a plague

eg: USC 2257 I mean the latest version is such a bullshit, but still they reserve the right to arrest me if I put foot on US soil, if I don't follow their rules

but you wrote it best: USC 2257 - "We Legislate To Offer Nothing For The Protection Of Children But Abuse Models Instead..."

ALSO the plague called evagelic christians, have become much more stronger in Europe too, because of their rise in the USA, it's getting ugly in Hungary & Slovakia, their numbers are rising and they talk the same bullshit as their US collegues, same for Guatemala, there they ask all the believers 10% of their wage, which then goes into advertisement for them, so that's why Guatemala is dropping their catholicism and is becoming evangelical/born again
they don't start in rich cities or regions, they start in poor regions and built their way up from there
look what happened to the US

What makes me go hmmm is the fact that you went to an American public school and yet, you're so ignorant.

Evolution doesn't work that way. We evolved from a common ancestor shared with primates. It's not like a monkey just suddenly had a human baby LOL

No wonder you're a conservative.

dig420 11-06-2005 02:49 PM

unless you're being sarcastic, in which case just direct that last post at pornmonger instead, who obviously really IS that stupid.

Walrus 11-06-2005 02:49 PM

The Master,

Take a look at this really interesting article about Charles Darwin's great great grandson. I read that in the paper a few weeks ago, and was reminded about it from your post.

Can you imagine being Charles Darwin's great great grandson and sitting through those anti-evolution lectures?

I've said it numerous times, I'm Canadian. I never once went to an American school. I'm sorry if holding information in your head for longer than a few minutes is difficult for you. Maybe try laying off the weed?

pornmonger, you scare me man.. and warchild, I hope this was sarcasm on your part...

pornmonger, I suggest you do not talk about things you clearly do not even begin to understand...

Also, as far as I have heard in the past, most of the americans do beleive in evolution, but many many many of them do not think it just happened out of pure coincidence, they think that some higher power started it. A higher power being whatever you really want it to mean.

Don't forget, our galaxy is really nothing different than a marble some alien kid keeps playing with.. MiB ;)

Science is a tricky thing, and things are always hard to beleive if they are not provable. And evolution can NOT be proven. Thats a fact, the reason for this simply is that it TAKES too long. I mean, please, we had evolution theories for about 150 years now, it takes a few million years for the human to fully evolve.. its simply impossible to prove this over a such short time period.

There are hints that natural selection is the only logical answer to all these things, but there also are a few gaps in the theory and a few unexplained things. I can understand that many people can not imagine that at some point, due to certain molecules simply existing and forming itself, single celled organisms started to appear which then mutated and eventually we popped up :) People simply also have to admit that it is kinda weird that chimps and humans have 99.4% _EXACT_ matching DNA sequences. Coincidence? Not really.. but OBVIOUSLY a chimp will not suddenly get a mutated baby that looks just like a damn human... mutations happen in tiny amounts, a few ten or maybe hundred changes in DNA sequences which control the actual general species.

BTW, medicin also makes witnessing evolution hard, because we simply fix the mutations that happen or do not let natural selection take its cause.

Hear ya! :)

Only my :2 cents: worth - bottom line US folks are no different to anyone else. But, in a population that is only around four times that of eg the UK, there are some very extreme groups. Seriously doubt that these people reflect the general views of the US population.

Sure.. agree there is an incredible arrogance within some of these groups that they know what is best for everyone else, both inside and outside US territory. Hence we got, (ingoring any validity or otherwise), evangenical groups spreading their version of the "word", others pontificating on the politics of other nations, (while US politics remains a major source of division within that country) and a federal government bent on "control" and using external threats and promises "we will defend you" as a solution (keeping it simplified with silly graphics like the "terrorist alert" system).

On religous fevor.. just look at the US Bible Belt. There is a "church" on every street corner and a pattern of "we don't like the pastor this week" - so let's set up yet another "church". It's just folks "playing" with what they want to see as their brand of religon. Kinda sad.

Apart from the old Soviet countries and perhaps, currently China - there are no western nations so hell bent on control of both their own citizens as the US - coupled with an interest in messing in the affairs of other nations. It's a dangeous cocktail and, as we have seen, has rebounding effects.

The US has massive problems in several areas, - with a percentage of world population of about 5% and a consuming culture at around 25%, borrowings on a massive scale (eg 2-4 billion/day from Bank of China alone), a reduced manufacturing capability etc - this is not a sustainable scenario. The problem list is endless - from education to health to poverty. You ever heard of the supposed "richest" country in the world not being able to effectively tend to the needs of it's own people in a natural disaster? Even India and Pakistan responded quicker, tho that problem continues.

No country is without their problems and bullshit - it's everwhere. The US is just one, and it's still a young country and immature as hell. Other nations went thru the same process in their own ways decades/centuries ago and, - sometimes, - have learned from past experiences.

There is a book (can't remember the exact title), but it does say a lot in the title alone - "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy". The US is exactly that - a "bought democracy" :winkwink:

A weekend at Camp David with Condi can straighten out his thoughts on evolution :)
