He's already refused or ignored numerous offers from many different sources! I can't think of one word for a leader who is so proud he deny's his people help. It's never had to be said before. Unfucking believable!

Yep I can tell you that is true...and they also offered medical help from one of those hospital ships I think.
The town affected by the mudslides back in 1999 still hasn´t recovered.Wonder if Chavez had accepted the help back then,that town would have fully recovered.
I also remember that happened after about 5 days of HEAVY rain.Chavez didn´t evacuate the town because there were elections that week and he didn´t want to pospone them.What a great humanitarian...

I think the main point for refusing something like that is that they will want something in return at some point.....just opens up a big can of worms. If any country wants to donate money they can donate it to various charities, i'm sure they wouldn't get refused.

Either way south america has it's own share of problems and they really should be using that money to help out their own people.

Chavez is using the money the country is making from the high oil prices to buy support in the continent.
We had big floods in february were lots of people were killed and many more lost their homes.Hundreds if not thousands of these homeless people are still living in refuges and stadiums while Chavez is paying for a satellite for his new TV station (telesur),is buying other country´s debts (argentina) and buying ships and giving away OUR oil to Cuba and other countries (Jamaica for one). He even had the nerve to pay for 250 houses in Cuba while hundreds of venezuelans are still living in big warehouses and are without jobs.

how could all these leaders think of their egos before thinking of the benefits that their people will be getting with that help? the president should look into what is really happening with his people right now. in this situation, they should always set aside the political issues that they are having, instead, help each other. In that way, more people will be benefited!

What many people blinded by Chavez´ international propaganda can´t see is that he is still an authoritarian ex-military man,who isn´t very keen on dissent. This guy is not too far from being a dictator. The only difference is that unlike Pinochet ,he is a leftist authoritarian.Same thing really,for those of us living in Venezuela.

The US can't be dealing with every country that wants to donate $100k or 5 million or whatever.

HAVANA: Cuban president Fidel Castro put on display some 1500 doctors equipped with medical supplies today in hopes of persuading arch-enemy the United States to allow them to treat victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Castro, in a televised meeting with the doctors, said the United States had not responded to his offer to send medical workers and 26 tonnes of supplies to the devastated US Gulf Coast.

He first made the offer public during a Television presentation on Friday, saying political enmity should be put aside during such a crisis.

The doctors, each with a green rucksack filled with emergency medicines, were brought to Havana over the weekend, Castro said, and were ready to leave at a moment's notice.

The Cuban leader read out news stories describing a lack of medical attention for Katrina refugees and those still trapped in Louisiana and Mississippi a week after the storm hit.

"These doctors could all already be there providing their services," Castro said.

"Forty-eight hours have passed and we still haven't received any response to our offer...We will wait patiently as many days as are necessary," he said.
