What's the best UNIVERSITY in California? Calling all cali ppl!

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of moving to your beautiful state. I want to go to university there and get a business degree. What kind of universities can you recommend me?

jennym 03-25-2004 09:17 AM

Don't pick USC...they suck! Especially at footlball! :1orglaugh

J/K...they are an awesome #2 in the country!

Seb From Holland 03-25-2004 09:19 AM

Thanks! I'm thinking about moving to Northern Cali (Hayward maybe). Is it any good? I mean I've been to cali a few times and I loved it but I really need to gather more info in the upcoming few months.

ADL Colin 03-25-2004 09:20 AM

If you can get in, Stanford

I want to move by the end of this year or 2005.. I don't want to rush into things. I want to pick up a nice course at a Uni too, as I'm currently studying Business & Economics in Holland.

There is so much I need to figure out. I'll probably move with a good friend of mine who currently lives in England. I'll ask alot in the upcoming months about things there. Especially prices. I need to be able to make a list of thing and what they cost. Or else I can't go I guess.

Sebastian.

Im partial to Cal-Berkeley since i'm an 1989 alumni. Berkeley has a great campus, awesome diversity of cultures and ideas, a fantastic faculty and even a pretty good greek system if thats your gig. I also liked Berkeley's location in the Bay Area with San Fran just a short BART trip away and everything from Reno to Sausalito, Santa Cruz, Napa, Yosemite etc just day trips away.

Stanford is more prestigious but also will cost you tens of thousand of dollars more for the four year degree. Their campus is really nice but I found it to be a snobby, elitist student body. Sorta like the Duke University of the West coast.

If your talking about a business graduate degree, both Stanford and the Haas B School at Berkeley at in the upper echelon of nationwide schools. Very selective and if you can get into those schools your an academic stud. The Anderson Business School at UCLA also has an outstanding reputation.

Shooter 03-25-2004 09:51 AM

Cal and Stanford both have very good business schools.

Keev 03-25-2004 10:12 AM

If you looking at primarily for there business schools

Stanford hands down for business...

2nd I would say USC, Cal.....

3rd UCLA, Cal State Fullerton

Gotta remember some schools look nice on paper and others look nice but get you into a great network of people... ie USC, Stanford its like a huge fraternity.

AnalProbe 03-25-2004 10:15 AM

Try California Beach University.

It's quite new, do a search in Google.

If you're sick of the weather, then you want to stay focused down south here....so of course, USC is your only REAL option!

Many thanks for your replies so far. I've also found the California State University of Hayward. Is this any good? Are state universities in general any good?

Yeah I'm really fed up with rain cold moist etc etc etc.. :(

BigFish 03-25-2004 10:23 AM

graduate or undergraduate?

Donny 03-25-2004 10:45 AM

Chico State University right here in my hometown has a very nice business program, and is reasonably priced.

Hayward state is generally considered OK, but nothing special. If you want to live in the east bay, I'd definitely go for Berkeley. I went to UC Santa Cruz and it was great, but I'm pretty sure they don't have a business program.

Hustler DJ 03-25-2004 10:57 AM

Hayward is alright, as is Chico State (or even Cal State San Francisco, which many folks forget about). But they're all second/third tier schools.

Tier One up in Northern California is Cal and Stanford. Period. Cal will be a tiny bit cheaper, but Stanford will pay off much more extensively in terms of connections.

Of course, I'd throw all of them in the crapper and come down to Southern Cal, and the *only* choice down here is USC. The Trojan Family is stronger than any social network you could imagine...

I went to the University of San Diego, no not UCSD and I know they have a good Business School.

Go Toreros!...lol

Donny 03-25-2004 11:05 AM

I doubt you can afford Cal or Stanford, so talking about them is useless.

Most of the other schools mentioned are in huge metropolitan areas. Do you really want to live in a fucking concrete jungle? Traffic SUCKS ASS!

That's why I recommended Chico State (rated the number 2 party school in the NATION by Playboy... and was number 1 several years back).

So, not only can you get a decent degree, you won't have to worry about horrid traffic AND you can party your ass off in your free time.

All I gotta say is stay outa tha east bay...

When considering a college be very careful about where you live...I know fuck all about the college's here...but dude...don't move from holland to hayward. For the love of god...don't move to union city, fremont, niles, newark, or any of those surrounding areas...you will hate yourself for leaving such a beautiful homeland for the east bay.

axelcat 03-25-2004 11:09 AM

USC- Hands down

HOAX, you make a point. Is the west bay better than the east bay? Help me out here I'm clueless. The only reason I should possibly go to Hayward is because my friend is a chiropractic student and his Uni is there. Apart from that I could live anywhere I want.

I haven't finished my uni here yet and I doubt I will ever do. And Stanford does look a bit pricy. Remember I'm only 22 years old and I have to fund this adventure all by myself. Perhaps USC is an option too, it is located in socal isn't it?

Thanks!

hyatla 03-25-2004 12:53 PM

UC Irvine! Their business school is the best in the nation.

Oh, north CA? Try UC davis then...

I will definately look into Chico State. I'm not too worried about meltropolitans though, I live in the second biggest city in Holland (yes I know what is peanuts compared to US standards but still).

I just wanna get a decent degree basically. I wanna do something that doesn't consume my 24 hours in a day but is still something that I can have as a backup for if I ever need to apply for a job.

I'm not too sure about the whole NoCal/SoCal thing yet. Although I heard NoCal is very nice (the landscape). Maybe less Mexicans I don't know. I just want something different from what I have now. The grass is always greener at the neighbours they say here.

I think we need to know your GMAT score first. If under 700, you can forget Stanford and berkeley.

TDF 03-25-2004 12:57 PM

ucla of course

I'm sorry but the GMAT system is not something we use here in Holland, would you care to explain it to me? :)

Seb... Davis is nice too. I saw one person mention it.

I'd highly recommend nor cal.

If you came to Chico I might be able to use you for some things. I need to hire. Depends on what you know how to do.

Graduate Management Admission Test, a must for getting into business school as a graduate student here in america.

Holland use the same system. and Holland has one of the best b school in Europe, called RSm, rotterdam school of mgmt, and actually, I was admitted by them years ago.

Unless you are going for undergraduate.

If NoCal, would recommend UCDavis, Berkeley, Menlo, or Stanford

UCSB has the most outrageous Halloween block parties every year. Even if you dont go there, try to make it a point to roadtrip down there if you can get a hookup on a place to crash.
