This has been just a matter of time for the last 50+ years. Eventually there will be a showdown, if only brief.

china's technology may be the pits, but they have many times more people than we do. they can afford to throw away plenty more soldiers than we can. mightn't that be a factor?

But America has promised to protect Taiwan in the event of an attack. War with Taiwan = War with America, most likely...

With more than half the companies on the planet using or selling stock that is "made in Taiwan", it will be China vs the world.

I don't think so. America has the Taiwan Relations Act, but this act doesn't require the United States to take any action against China in the event of an attack.

Also, I doubt that America wants to step in the ring with China over an issue such as Taiwan's independence.

Why should China go fuck themselves? From a historical standpoint Taiwan has always been a part of China.

Anyway when Taiwan reunifys with China, it will be a Special Administrative Region like Hong Kong and Macau so China's restricted freedoms won't apply there.

Oh and I've been to Hong Kong a few times, China has kept their word and left HK alone from both an economic and social standpoint.

Edit: Also the U.S. WILL NOT support Taiwan's independence. They have publicly stated this several times. They will not protect Taiwan either.

The most that the U.S. will do is sell weapons to Taiwan and act as a neutral party.

China will lose badly in any conventional invasion of Taiwan. The distance is just too great to support an invasion in the face of resistance. As well the Chinese military budget is far less than Japan's. Considering them a superpower is misguided. And if they should lose in an invasion it would destabilize party authority. The Chinese are a cautious people and they won't do this.

They may try some sort of blockade or some sort of unconventional conflict, but I doubt more.

I think you underestimate China and over estimate America's ability to "own" China.

China has roughly 50 times the military that Iraq does (or did), and 50 times the population of Iraq.

America has yet to fully "own" Iraq, what do you think the outcome would be if it had to fight Iraq another 49 times?

Oh yeah, and I forgot one small thing, China has nuclear weapons.

War with china is simple.. All you need is a few thousand grenades, and you'll kill off half their population.

What the US really needs to do is just let a country sort out it's own problems itself.

Oh, and the crack about Europe being nazi and what ever... when one country is attacking another country or multiple countries or out right threatening to take over the continent... that's very different. That is no longer one country's business.
