Is europe really expensive to live in?

My dad was telling me when he went to England in the mid 70s and France a few years ago, food - lodging and such is VERY expensive.

Now I am looking at Australia. But I want to keep my options open. I truly have NO preference where I go - what I do know is I want to go somewhere new. And I think anywhere would be an experience all in its own.

However - I have seen 350sqft apartments in France for like $1,750 a month CANADIAN! That's unreal. We pay like $400 here for TWICE the size!

I am wondering if I am looking in all the wrong places, or is metro europe really expensive?

Dirty F 09-17-2003 05:23 PM

Amsterdam is fucking expensive.

The pad im having now is 1840 euros a month.

teenjump 09-17-2003 05:25 PM

Jesus H. Christ.
That's insane. No wonder you mad pimp in adult to live there. You must have 2-3 roommates, eh?

PerfectionGirls 09-17-2003 05:30 PM

Mexico baby!!!

teenjump 09-17-2003 05:31 PM

Nah dude. Somewhere exciting, with a lot of history, and very few mexicans = ++;

lol.

JOP 09-17-2003 05:50 PM

You can not compare many countries in europe with each other.

There are very cheap places in the east and south and pretty

expensive places northern and mid europe.

London is the most expensice currently followed by Munich,

Hamburg and downtown Brussels.

The cheapest places are in greece, portugal and all over

eastern europe (it gets damn cheap far in the east like

in Romania and the Ukraine).

teenjump 09-17-2003 05:52 PM

But do they pay accordingly? Like is there more poverty because of this, or do they pay you on a scale to make living possible?

Emerald 09-17-2003 05:59 PM

Try Poland, living isn't that expensive. Or ask Paul about Czech Republic.

teenjump 09-17-2003 06:09 PM

Prague would be a cool place to live.
But I am hoping to try something with an English dominant language society. Not that I don't want to learn other languages, but the barriers of communication are too much if you're not fluent.

chowda 09-17-2003 06:10 PM

Uh, he doesnt live anywhere close to Amsterdam.

Emerald 09-17-2003 06:25 PM

Try the bus/Metro

Maru 09-17-2003 06:27 PM

What about Scotland? There are parts of the British Isles that are considerably cheaper than London. If you want to live where they speak English, there's only GB in Europe.

I've heard that Australia is very nice. In fact, I know people in Europe who are dreaming of settling there. The thing about Australia that you always hear: It's far away from everything.

digifan 09-17-2003 06:36 PM

And they lack broadband, lots of webmasters have to work using modem still, only the lucky have dsl... I have a friend in New Zealand who has built his own dsl but has to pay per mb and it is very expensive.

Sly_RJ 09-17-2003 06:37 PM

I think a better question is how easy or hard is it to live in these countries. You can't just grab your suitcase, hop on a plane, and move... can you?

~Ray 09-17-2003 06:40 PM

When I was in Tokyo... a can of beer cost USD $6 each.

So I wouldn't move there.

Mr. Jim 09-17-2003 06:41 PM

How expensive is the cost of living in Europe?

chodadog 09-17-2003 06:54 PM

Bulgaria.

~Ray 09-17-2003 06:56 PM

My friend went backpacking in Australia for 3 months and stayed a year... :)

Theo 09-17-2003 07:00 PM

unfortunately now greece and specially athens is expensive too. Only my last bills for electricity, water and phone add up to 850 euro

NBDesign 09-17-2003 08:16 PM

Sad to say... everyplace is the same... once you live in a place long enough... that is...

As for the rate of what things cost.. it's all relative... You will make more in a city where things are a bit more expensive...

If you don't have a license 2 park your car in Amsterdam, you'll pay! 620 is a good price than, where do you park your car? you probably know the better places.....

I remember when I went shopping with my ex-GF in amsterdam for a few hours, had some drinks and diner, and after that the parking cost me 67 Euro's!!!!!!

:1orglaugh , hehe ...

As a general rule, the poorer the country (or the respective location within that country) is, the cheaper it gets. So it depends on you what you choose if you want to relocate or find temporary accommodation.

salo18 09-18-2003 03:42 AM

I have seen small fucking apartments for 100$ here in sweden hehe :thumbsup

I am moving to a new apartment as well.. The price is 1000 euro's a month (www.thumbtgp.com/huis/)

there you can see what I get for that :-) (it's in "castricum" and that place is pretty expensive, but it's damn nice :-) when you go more east, it's getting cheaper)

@quiet I see you more and more looking for places in Holland :-) Good choice, it's not that hard to get a nice place when you pay enough....If you want some good sites of housebrokers(sale and rent) contact me on ICQ and I show you some.
