Is beef jerky supposed to actually be edible?

or is this some joke that everyone except me is in on? I bought some jerky called 'Jack Links' and sat down to try beef jerky for the first time in my life. It's like chewing on a leather jacket. Is this stuff supposed to be prepared somehow before being eaten or what?

I also did one time and never tried it again, maybe were missing something

geedub 07-07-2013 06:38 AM

The stuff is pretty hit or miss in my opinion. Some is a little more tender but I would imagine the leathery way is the proper way lol.

k0nr4d 07-07-2013 06:40 AM

I bought some dried chicken stuff by this same company and it was really good. I honestly don't see how this is supposed to be edible, it looks like a dog treat...

Si 07-07-2013 06:40 AM

:1orglaugh good question!

AdultKing 07-07-2013 06:42 AM

I give my dog these

http://www.robbospetbarn.com.au/imag...ages/EX592.jpg

Looks just like beef jerky.

lezinterracial 07-07-2013 06:45 AM

I don't like it very much. But I like to take it while hiking. Don't worry about keeping it cold. And I don't eat too much of it cause I don't like it.

Now, I do remember a guy giving me some deer jerky he made, It didn't taste bad. It was actually ok.

Fat Panda 07-07-2013 06:45 AM

jack links is shit

arock10 07-07-2013 07:36 AM

yeah jack links is a terrible example of beef jerky

its like the mcdonalds of burgers

beerptrol 07-07-2013 07:42 AM

Make your own, it's cheaper and tastes better! The only time I'll buy it is if the local butcher makes some beef or deer jerky!

vdbucks 07-07-2013 07:43 AM

You're not really supposed to chew it up and swallow it right away. You more or less suck on it like a mint while slowly chewing it over time. It's supposed to last for a bit; not just chomp chomp like a cheese burger...

Fat Panda 07-07-2013 07:44 AM

yup make your own

Mutt 07-07-2013 07:48 AM

i'm a beef jerky junky - you got a shitty brand, you're right, bad jerky is exactly like chewing on an old baseball glove or leather jacket. it should be tender, chewy and have lots of flavor.

this is a good brand - jerky is definitely hit and miss.

Babaganoosh 07-07-2013 07:52 AM

Jack Links is trash. Most mass-produced jerky sucks. Pemmican is pretty decent as Mutt said. There's a little place in the middle of nowhere that makes some of the best beef jerky I have had.

Mcdonalds burgers taste good or very good to people. Not a god comparison.

Lace 07-07-2013 08:21 AM

Get some jerky from here - https://www.bigjohnsbeefjerky.com/
And thank me later.

k0nr4d 07-07-2013 08:44 AM

TwinCities 07-07-2013 08:47 AM

I like it when it's softer, but I can see where you're coming from. Sometimes it can be like chewing a piece of leather.

On a road trip, there's nothing like some jerky and a Monster Energy drink. They just go together. After I finish the bag, I have second meal by retrieving the jerky scraps caught in the meat pockets in my teeth. Yummy.

NaughtyRob 07-07-2013 09:34 AM

Supposed to be edible yes, I love it! My brother makes some incredible jerky using bhut jolokia pepper, kick ass but soooo hot!

Antonio 07-07-2013 09:34 AM

never tried beef jerky, but its South African version, biltong, is pretty damn addictive - the ostrich and gamy ones are really tough, but still super tasty

Ordering some today. I love little, unknown beef jerky places.

If you like real beef jerky, you'll like it. Just make sure you have some dental floss handy. :1orglaugh

Looks like simple cold smoked beef, so probably in any store that specializes in meat including smoked meat?

I make my own biltong, I have a biltong machine I built myself. Love the stuff.

ErectMedia 07-07-2013 10:04 AM

I actually ate a bag of...

Jack Link's
Premium Cuts
A1 Steak Sauce

last night and was pretty fresh, hit or miss if you get the fresh shit depending on how much the store moves and how much backstock they have, I get a bunch of homemade shit as well which trumps any packaged shit but buy that one cause I love A1 sauce. :thumbsup

Bman 07-07-2013 10:11 AM

bad beef jerky is inedible , good beef jerky is great.
Yours probably wasnt fresh.

Nicky 07-07-2013 10:12 AM

I actually like the sweet&hot one from Jack Links

Mutt 07-07-2013 10:21 AM

Jack Links is hit and miss - i've had decent bags and i've had bags exactly like konrad got stuck with where i had to wonder what went wrong and how long it had been since it had been packaged.

mikesouth 07-07-2013 10:39 AM

back to the OP and it being "leathery" didnt the word "Jerky" give you a tad of a clue?

agreed jack links sucks Pemmican isnt bad, home made is best

its a high protein, low fat, high salt, no carb pick me up for anything you are doing generally outdoors, its a snack not a meal.

seeandsee 07-07-2013 10:44 AM

it's all shit compared to this:

AllAboutCams 07-07-2013 10:58 AM

Get some south African jerky that is great

k0nr4d 07-07-2013 11:01 AM

actually that prosciutto is looking good...gonna go buy some. Fuck this jerky and everything about it.

Mutt 07-07-2013 11:08 AM

prosciutto is amazing but great jerky is better - both are expensive.

as far as Mike South saying jerky isn't a meal - if i was gonna be lethally injected and they're taking my order for my last meal, jerky is on my list.

I actually reopened the package, and maybe half of it was edible (with the other half being like munching on the sole of a shoe). It's OK but not really something that would go on my regular shopping list - gonna just stick to the european shit like prosciutto and cured salami

Spunky 07-07-2013 12:32 PM

I just had to buy 2 lbs of it off EBay now
