Who had wisdom teeth yanked?

What kind of pain am i expecting?

:helpme

Barefootsies 02-01-2013 08:31 AM

Yes I have, all four. I would highly recommend you go to an oral surgeon versus a dentist. The experience is night and day.

I never grew wisdom teeth but I did have the rear molar extracted because of TMJ. It didnt really hurt at all, but it was weird hearing my jawbone cracking when the oral surgeon was pulling it out with these big pliers. About a week later, a bone fragment poked thru my gum and then that had to be extracted as well.

Just tell them you are afraid of dentist... they numbed me up really good, gave me xanax before the appointment and sent me home with some percocet.

Slick 02-01-2013 08:36 AM

I've heard soooo many horror stories of getting wisdom teeth pulled, but I had to get 2 out a few years ago and I never had any pain at all and didn't even have to take any meds, maybe I just got lucky.

newB 02-01-2013 08:37 AM

Depends on how good your dentist is, and whether they can just pull them or have to cut them.

I was recommended a good dentist when I got mine taken out (I had all 4 pulled during the same appointment) and was back to normal and eating solid food the very next day. However, I have heard of people having two taken out and having such a bad experience they never go back for the other two (which is why I opted to do all four at once).

Just in case you experience pain they'll probably give you a prescription for Codeine - I would suggest getting that filled ASAP rather than taking a wait and see approach, just in case.

C.Carnato 02-01-2013 08:40 AM

You'll walk out thinking: "Hey, that wasn't so bad after all!"

Then a little later the local anesthetic wears off, at the same time you swell up and the pain games begin. Everything tastes of blood and you curl up whimpering like a little puppy for 2 days.

Well, that was my experience anyway. Have luck!

Rebel D 02-01-2013 08:41 AM

i had mine surgically removed it was sore for a few days

yeah i would recommend the same here..

I had all 4 taken out and it was about as painless exp almost completely, I was awake for the whole thing even.. I felt a dull pain after a bit, but the t3's they gave me were more than enough to get me through it for a couple days.

Mine weren't impacted though so I've heard that helps the process.

I think you have to go to an oral surgeon; dentists don't remove wisdom teeth because they can't put you under. Mine are fucking impacted. I should probably get them taken out, but I'll probably just wait until my back molars start to disintegrate from the pressure. I'm not looking forward to it. Just make sure you go to someone who'll give you painkillers.

Incorrect. My sister had the dentist she goes pull her's one by one at 4 different appointments. I know he is not a surgeon.

Well, my experience wasn't quite like that. I went there, had a cup of pills and a shot. Woke up and was carried to the car, drove home, and slept more a less three days. I was up long enough to take a piss, drink some 7-up, eat some soup, and take some pills. After 3 days of that, I was up and around for the most part. Although I did another few days of minimal food and drink.

I can't say I enjoyed having to dig food stuff out of the holes with my tongue for a month or so. But I would prefer that and the blood over the the pain. I think no matter how you do it, there is going to be some discomfort involved.

Good luck.

anexsia 02-01-2013 08:49 AM

I had all of mine removed at the same time and I didn't experience any pain at all....didn't need any of the painkillers prescribed to me.

Indeed.

:Oh crap

Rochard 02-01-2013 08:53 AM

Yea for ice cream.

geedub 02-01-2013 09:00 AM

I got knocked out for it, 2 were impacted, 9 years later I can still feel the scars from the impacted ones with my tongue. I would say definitely go to an oral surgeon.

I had all 4 taken out. 2 pulled and 2 cut out from my jaw as they were so impacted. The pain BEFORE pulling them was WAAAAY worse than the pain after. The pain after only lasts a few days and it's more of an uncomfortable feeling vs. pain.

Do what you have to do to get them out if they're going to be a problem later on! And def. go to an oral surgeon instead of a dentist for it.

Agreed 110%!!!!

Spunky 02-01-2013 09:53 AM

I've had 2 of them most of my life and only just recently had them finally pulled

JamesM 02-01-2013 09:56 AM

i have those intact.

media 02-01-2013 09:58 AM

I just had mine done 2 weeks ago.. I had the IV sedation, I highly suggest that.. It was like an extra $400, I don't remember anything during the procedure.. I don't even remember getting moved from the chair to the recovery room.. I remember waking up later getting into the car.. So far so good with the healing.. we'll see in a few months when all the nerves calm back down..

All in all it was $1800 for the procedure and about $70 for the prescriptions since I don't carry medical insurance.

The_Peeper 02-01-2013 10:01 AM

Depends on whether they are impacted or not. Would also recommend an oral surgeon. All in all not that bad just be ready to chew and eat from the front of your mouth for a few days. Good Luck:thumbsup

LAJ 02-01-2013 10:05 AM

Shit.. been so long I can't even remember. I'm sure it's painless now by comparison.

Black All Through 02-01-2013 10:29 AM

I had my top ones taken out a decade ago, hurt so fucking bad I kept the bottom two in and now when I eat they make my jaw click if i chew to hard.

fitzmulti 02-01-2013 10:44 AM

I definitely agree with those mentioning an oral surgeon.
I had all 4 removed at once, and all were impacted...no fun at all,
but having an oral surgeon and the IV definitely made things smoother...
:P

CourtneyR 02-01-2013 10:48 AM

I only had the bottom two. The top ones never decided to show up. However they gave me Vicodin and I'm allergic so the pain was fairly bad with only IB profin to help.

2013 02-01-2013 10:53 AM

worst pain of my life

DWB 02-01-2013 11:36 AM

I had all 4 removed at the same time and had a hard time after. Had dry sockets and jacked up on pain meds for a week. But some people have no problems at all. Flip a coin and have them removed.

BlackCrayon 02-01-2013 11:51 AM

my dentist has been bugging me to get them pulled for years but i keep putting it off. they aren't impacted, just got a cavity in one of them. either way, i feel around my mouth and think without them, chewing is going to be more work? i don't know. sounds stupid but they are so big in comparison to the other teeth.

Supz 02-01-2013 11:55 AM

get the gas, feel no pain. if you have a good oral surgeon you should not feel much until after. By then you should have Vicodin.

LGParsons 02-01-2013 12:00 PM

My son had 4 extracted by his dentist, I had 5 that had fused to my jawbone scraped off by a surgeon. My son was tranqued, I chose to sleep through it... heavy meds helped us both, before, during, and after, but it wasn't fun. Lots of bruising... roughly 3 days you'll want to sleep through as much as possible.

mikesouth 02-01-2013 12:01 PM

Hadd all 4 removed at the same time....Barefootsies is right go to an oral surgeon and DO WHAT HE TELLS YOU....no sugary drinks....unsweet tea is good for them You dont want a dry socket.

and when he gives you the antibiotics TAKE THEM or risk a sinus infection that could require surgery itself. (your roots are VERY close to the sinus canals and thats why they give you the antibiotics.

Its painful for a few days but after that it heals quickly

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 02-01-2013 12:14 PM

I had all four wisdom teeth pulled at once when I was in my early 20's...by a Navy dentist. :helpme

After the anesthesia set-in, all that I recall was the dentist physically perched on the arm of a chair with a big pair of plyers, literally pulling and twisting on my teeth and the roots, until he could get enough leverage to rip them out.

A few times I heard snaps and cracks, and felt that he was surely breaking my jaw. Other than that, it wasn't too bad of an experience... :upsidedow

Thank goodness for Codeine! I have a pretty high threshold tolerance for pain, so I saved about half of my Codeine pills for future concerts (which almost made it worth the experience - talking about feeling comfortably numb, hehe).

Good luck!

It'll pale in comparison to when I had 29 extracted.

Dirty D 02-01-2013 12:32 PM

I had mine removed...

I suggest a female dentist.
Nuzzle her breasts while she yanks your teeth...

Not an even trade, but makes for a more fond memory :)

the older you are the worse it is.
Also if they are compacted and will they have to break your jaw to get them out

Not good at the best of times
