I'm really confused why Russia isn't more concerned about Iran's nuclear power. Being as they are so close, if Iran has it's own Chernobyl, Russia would suffer the most.

Russia is the largest oil producer in the world. Russia has never taken action before when Iran has been attacked, why would it now?

Exactly. Georgian army has attacked Russian peace keepers in Ossetia (many of them were killed). This is a direct declaration of war on Russia. So what Russia should do in such a situation? Stay aside a watch as its soldiers being killed? No one country in the world would act this way. Thus Russian military forces had the only way to go. The way to the Georgia. Is there anybody who believe it was unfair/unreasonable?

Russia makes a lot of money off of Iran (by selling weapons, mainly).

It's in their best interest than Iran is not "liberated".

The move of military force is supposed to send a message that Russia would support Iran if someone tries to liberate it.

The US doesn't want to start shit in Iran, it's the Israel who wants to attack. If Russia is to support Iran, the US would be even more reluctant to get involved. And without US support the Israel won't stand a chance.

If this could be wired up in such a way so as to avoid a general war but result in Russia occupying Iran militarily, that wouldn't necessarily be such a bad thing.

Providing, of course, that:

a) The Strait of Hormuz is placed under international control.
b) Russia doesn't allow the Mullahs to get the bomb.

I don't have any links to anything, but I just finished reading a book about Russian submarines during the cold war. The end of the book discussed how the US was funding nuclear scientists, including salaries and housing, in order to support them and prevent them from working for terrorists. The amount of support mentioned seemed to be a lot more than just the US paying to dismantle old nukes.

Seems to me like the Russian military, over a million men strong, is incapable of doing anything. Some military units might not even report to Moscow.

The United States did it for years as Iraq fired on US planes patrolling the no fly zone.
