Would you hire this guy?

I put an ad on Craigslist for a PHP/MySQl developer. I waded through a shitload of bullshit and found a local guy that meets all my requirements. Great portfolio and is very proficient in what I need, but...

I searched online and he's been arrested twice. Once was back in 1994 for Grand Theft and the other is from this year for failure to pay child support. He's unemployed and obviously can't get a job that pays him commensurate with his skills because of his felony record. I'm no way excusing that he shouldn't have taken care of his kids, but with a record, they make it hard.

I called him back to let him know I found his records but still wanted him to come in for an interview. Would you hire him if he met all your requirements but still had the record?

Coup 06-13-2011 07:34 PM

Hire him.:2 cents:

Deej 06-13-2011 07:34 PM

If he can get the job done then just make sure you cover your bases on access until hes more trusted.

Cant kick a guy in the balls more for his past especially if you wade and wade and he meets the reqs...

Brujah 06-13-2011 07:37 PM

No. Cancel the interview and hire someone else.

NALEM 06-13-2011 07:39 PM

Before you do hire him, do what Deej wrote, limit his access and ...

ask him how he plans to address the child support issue. If he continues to not pay, even after getting work from you, it is likely the county will come around and place a wage garnishment. If his pay is cut, he might just walk away from you. Look him in the eye, and see how he responds. Good luck!

d-null 06-13-2011 07:45 PM

1994 was a long time ago :2 cents:

lagcam 06-13-2011 07:46 PM

I wouldn't have told him what I had found out prior to the interview and would have given him the chance to tell me if there was something I should know.

Now he may just be coming to case the joint of the guy been "looking him up on the internet"........ :)

Kelli58 06-13-2011 08:00 PM

100% hell no. A programmer can really do some serious damage if he isn't someone who you can trust. He's had not one, but two different serious issues with the law. Clearly this guy is a shady, POS - you don't need to bring someone like that into your life.

marlboroack 06-13-2011 08:26 PM

Hire me instead

xholly 06-13-2011 08:32 PM

dont be a cunt and give the guy a job. also what he does with his money earned has nothing to do with you.

Except for the extra work, expense, liability in making the court ordered child support deductions and payments required of any employer in that situation.

He was arrested in '94 for Grand Theft... but was he convicted? Merely being arrested means next to nothing--cops and DA's make mistakes all the time.

Spunky 06-13-2011 08:50 PM

I'd pass on this thug, can't trust criminals

CYF 06-13-2011 08:56 PM

1994 was a LONG time ago.

See what impression you get at the interview.

cooldude7 06-13-2011 09:19 PM

in case of coding , nope.

programmers/developers are smart and he has crime history , now do the math.

Remember back before the internet that guy said: "Let he who is without sin, may he cast the first stone" - I'm pretty sure his name was Jesus.

His convictions don't have anything to do with the nature of the job. There's also no moral turpitude issues. I'd give him a chance. Besides, Canada, Australia, America etc is the land of second and third and fourth chances. Leave all that stigma BS to the Third World.

Good point!

Many people have been wrongly arrested.

Do you know how many felons there are in this industry already?

He was arrested 26 years ago...if he's been clean this long, chances are he's probably learned from it. Since that happened so long ago, he was probably in his late teens. Should be pay for the rest of his life for something he did when he was a teen?

The child support thing...um, if he's without a job, how is he going to pay his support? Maybe he needs the job to pay his child support.

Give the guy a shot. Just give him little bits to start with and at least give him a chance to earn the position.

Or hey, go after a guy who has no criminal record, but might be a shitty programmer who will fuck you over with his lack of competency.

Twoface31 06-13-2011 11:00 PM

if you think he's the guy you need well hire him :)

moeloubani 06-13-2011 11:20 PM

grand theft auto is a pretty serious crime...maybe he got caught up with a bad girlfriend or something? sometimes what drives people to do stupid things are the situations and not the people themselves..talk to him if his portfolio is that good and make your decision based on why he was charged with those things and the circumstances that led to it

when i think grand theft auto i think of a high speed chase, cocaine in the seats, bullets flying and helicopters hovering...but it maybe (probably?) was nothing like that

Peter Romero 06-13-2011 11:21 PM

I love it when the pornographers try to out-virgin each other.

Anal Hobbit 06-13-2011 11:31 PM

Ask him if he's black?

leg4 06-13-2011 11:44 PM

He's still hire-able.

Bring him in and feel him out.

I agree.. Hire him and give him a chance.

His family business is not your business.

HerPimp 06-14-2011 02:41 AM

When a person is desperate they are not themselves. I think the child support arrest is a bigger deal over the grand theft auto. Everyone knows how to act nice and many people know how to work it to get the job.

Do not meet with him, cancel and tell him you hired another person.

Pornopat 06-14-2011 03:06 AM

You allready invited him to the job interview even after finding out so you should really let it depend on how well the job interview goes.
Try to keep an open mind.

BigMemo 06-14-2011 03:20 AM

can't trust criminals

Phoenix 06-14-2011 04:07 AM

interview him and see if you guys can work effectively together

cover yourself until you know you can trust him, but you would do that with anyone anyway

V_RocKs 06-14-2011 04:17 AM

He has already had second chances...

When you get that low you need to grab the boot straps and take it...

I definitely would NOT hire him no matter how nice he seems. He is a player and he will play you. He obviously prefers to get things easy instead of doing the work. For all you know he is the "smart guy" for a crime syndicate and they are looking for a sucker to bleed money out of.

I actually know a guy like this and he keeps asking me for work. I keep letting him know he should have made better choices.

seeandsee 06-14-2011 04:20 AM

talk with him, he is all human kind too
