It looks and sounds like the guy comes around to the side of the car and starts hitting the window on the driver's side. at that point the cop had 2 choices. Drive away and leave the guy there or shoot him. He can't leave. If he leaves and that guy hurts someone else he would be torn apart for it and people would be in here saying, "What, fucking cops just leave and let these guys attack other people?" So the leaving option is off the table.

If the guys is attacking a police car with a bat he is clearly out of his mind. I would imagine if you just sit there he is going smash your window in and bash you in the head. That bat is a deadly weapon. The guy really only had one choice. It is easy to second guess it now, but when you are in the moment and have two seconds to make a choice, it isn't so easy.

I'll ask you. Would you be willing to take the chance? You get out of your car, draw, aim and shoot your tazer. If it misses of doesn't work properly the guy is on top of you bashing your head in with a bat. Is that a risk you want to take?

Its not like the movies where Bruce Willis shoots a guy in the foot as a warning. Cops are trained to shoot to kill. If they pull their gun and deem they have to fire they have to go for the kill shot.

Yep. It looks like he panicked. He had good reason too. The kid was crazy with a baseball bat. It can be a lethal weapon easily. But I don't think the officer is cut out to be a cop. Pepper spray or tazer would have been better or a retreat and wait for backup if the situation didn't warrant action (other civilians at risk). I wouldn't press charges against the cop but I think he needs desk duty.

That's a 100% justified use of force. The officer feared for his life and used his service weapon to stop the threat.

I am very slow to side with cops on use of deadly force issues; however, this cop had to
open his car door or roll down his window in order to try using a taser or mace.
That would expose him to the guy swinging the bat, so the cop is "trapped" or has
to flee in the car. It is not his job nor is he required to flee; just an option.

When the suspect came to the driver side of the patrol car and swung the bat he forced
an option.

Some of you crack me up, you're big and bad and hate the cops till you or someone you care about is in danger, then the first thing you do is call 911! LOL

Like I said I don't think the officer should be charged, but I also don't think he should be an officer in the field. He seemed to panick. That's dangerous for a police officer. Give him a desk job for a while at least if that's what really happened.

The cop gave him a chance, then the cop did what cops do when you put them in these positions. Looks justified to me.

eh thats a tough one...might have been better to hit him with the car...but then the city pays for a paralyzed person forever...not a lot of options if someone is smashing your car with a bat...and coming inside for you

It was a justified shooting from my vantage point. People are beat to death with stick like objects all the time. A bat is a deadly weapon.

I am not a cop kiss ass or the type of person who always takes the cop's side but the cop did the right thing by shooting the guy with the bat. It seems like some of you expect the cop to shoot the bat out of the guy's hand, maybe a little pepper spray would of subdued the attacker.

Your job is to serve and protect. not sacrifice your life so a lunatic with a bat can live.

backing up the car was the first thing he did and he backed up constantly for a good while, probably to try and give the kid a chance to ease up.

i'm far from the type to side with police officers but this was a clear "you gonna get shot" scenario.

ok i never side with cops but in this case i dont blame him.. heck even if im not a cop and some fucker came swinging like that and i felt like my life or the lives of people i care about was in danger, id shoot the fucker..

did you not watch the video? He was slowly backing up and the guy was following him, swinging away. How far should he back up? Should he go around the block? How fast should he back up? We don't see behind him. We have no idea how much space or road there is for him to back up into.

I'm the kind of guy who feels the cops should only use lethal force when it is absolutely needed and to me, based on what I can see in that video it was needed. A bat is a serious weapon. I wouldn't fuck with him. The guy seems like he is clearly out of his mind. I personally wouldn't wait until he was bashing my head in before I acted and I wouldn't run away and let him take off and maybe hurt someone else.

Unless someone else was in danger he could drive away and wait for backup.
