the last time i was in NY my brother and i were jumped in Harlem. it was very late, we'd been at a jazz club all night.

no taxis, and no cops anywhere.

two guys, one of them asked for money then pulled a gun. i'm not sure if it was the best strategy, but we both instinctively started running. they didn't try to pursue.

it was an experience.

The truth is, NY City is the safest place I have ever lived. I've lived in most of the major cities and this is the safest. If you stay out of places you have no business going in you won't get mugged.

Unfortunately you have to live here for a while to know where those places are. For the most part Manhattan proper and the more expensive sections of all the boroughs are safe.

Harlem, deep Brooklyn, deep Queens and ALL of the Bronx are off limits to those that don't live there. Black and white.

If you have car there's less chance of being mugged. But, if you take that car to a sketchy neighborhood often you have to understand that you are being watched. If you get mugged or your car gets broken into it's by someone you've probably said hello to. Don't say hi to anyone you don't have to.
