I totally agree with you, it'll be interesting to see Google's attempt, but if there was a company that could stand a chance of competing against Apple, it would be them. :2 cents:

Android is a great mobile OS, even at the stage it's at now. It won't be surprised if at one point it's running on more phones than the iPhone OS.

My girlfriend is developing an application for the platform. It's open source. The SDK is available and free. They're even providing grants for developers.

Here's the Google overview video:

There have been a long list of so called I-killers. How many Ipod killers have there supposedly been? And yet the Ipod is still #1 by far. The same with the Iphone. It doesn't matter if you make a better product, you have to convince the masses that it is cooler than the Iphone and that will be very hard to do.

While they (Google) will have a branded phone, the alliance responsible for the project includes HTC, Motorola and a few other cellphone manufacturers. You can bet that we will see Android on a lot more than one model of phone. Now even the no-name Chinese cellphone makers will have a top of the line platform for their products. I really think that this will have more impact on the mobile phone industry than the iPhone...long term.

I have to see Google's design and final list of features based on Android.... .. so far sounds interesting :)

iPhone is from Apple, that fact itself = FAIL

jakethedog 08-18-2008 06:31 PM

I just got the new iPhone 3G yada yada .. a few weeks ago .. 100% truth be told .. my 2 year old Motorola Rokr E6 kills it in actual practical use .. yes the edge and 3g is faster net access and browsing .. but thats where it ends .. horrible computer to phone tethering .. and actually NON existent phone/modem to computer tethering and for practical/work use .. the motorola with business card reader and real player ..with expandable/removable memory .Linux based OS .. and actually pretty good picture/video recording with actual adjustments for brightness and type of pix .. Bottom line .. I am pretty unhappy .. if i didn't get it for free it would have been returned and I am certainly not throwing my old one out .. I have a feeling this one will crash and be toast any day now .. .. just my thoughts ..

SomeCreep 08-18-2008 06:35 PM

Iphone killer? Talk about weak sauce. When are people going to figure out that consumers are not interested in buying a cheap imitation of the Iphone.

At Microsoft, they're partying right now.

Microsoft has it's own operating system they try to put into smart phones.

So I don't see how they would be partying right now with another competitor...

You dont have to be the best, you dont have to be the cheapest. Just be the first !:thumbsup

Yeah, but it's only available if you're an ATT user. What about the other 73% of the US cellphone market?

to me the whole appeal with the iphone is its slim design, the full front of it is screen. its 100% touchscreen, no buttons on the face. i have the 3g and its by far the best phone i ever had and i'm hard on my phones. like you said though, if anyone can try to compete its goog.

Look at what they built... it's FREE.
That means cell phone providers won't have to pay liscencing fees, the phones will be cheaper for them and since it's open source, it will have more options.
The 10 million dollars concepts will bring in tons of apps too.

Divide and conquer. Windows Mobile isn't a frontrunner in radical innovation. Therefore, most phones with Windows Mobile don't appeal to gadget-lovers as much as Apple does.

The GPhone, like the iPhone, will be getting initial market share among the gadget-lovers. Relatively speaking, it will take away more market share from Apple than it will from MS. This will impede Apple's ability to expand its popularity from early adopters to the market as a whole.

Moreover, considering the halo effect of the iPhone, Google taking market share away from Apple on the mobile market will lower the market share Apple is currently taking away from Microsoft on the desktop and laptop markets.

Of course, the bad part of the situation, for MS, is that integration of the GPhone with Google's online services will probably make it even harder for MS to gain market share in the online market.

Still, having two of your main competitors fight to be the biggest innovator in a market where innovation wasn't your selling point to begin with isn't all that bad.

tight - looking forward to that one

One complaint is the speaker on the iphone but now that they have all this cool shit it does. The iphone does everything. I have the older one and with the GPS it is awesome. I just took it on a trip and we all fought over who got it next. We had to buy a charger (available in every gas station thanks to ipods) for the car. The iphone has so jumped out in front with simple ease of use and real internet. Good luck google and I love you guys but this is an odd direction for a SE to take.

Yeah with a 3 year locked in contract by Rogers (were here in Canada), with a minimum $45/mo data and text plan is what I hear (that's down from minimum $60 a month due to everyone protesting) - absolutely brutal.

The App Store gives it a boost, but the iPhone still can't do lots of things that most Palm, Blackberry or Windows Mobile phones can do. The only real advantage the iPhone has is the GUI. Most of the Apps you're seeing on the iPhone now are just clones of existing apps from the other systems.

It's also not just Google putting this system together. It's major cellphone manufacturers, cell service providers and telecom companies. So it's not really a SE company putting out a cell phone.

You nailed it. I don't really like Apple products but their marketing is BEYOND REPROACH.

Hell, their commercials even turn songs into hits. The whole of Apple marketing will be very tough to beat, even by a phone that is 2X as good.

In all this time what has google created?.....Adwords. That's it, 98% of their income comes from that. They've never created anything else other than beta this and beta that. And in reality, they didn't even invent PPC, they just made it better.

I don't understand why people are so confident in Google, they have a very limited track record. Apple has been around forever, Microsoft has been around forever. Yet people seem to think Google will topple them both.

Everyone keeps referring to this like it's Google and only Google. Here's the list of just some of companies involved in this project:

Google
China Mobile
Sprint Nextel
T-Mobile
NTT DoCoMo
Qualcomm
Broadcomm
Texas Instruments
Synaptics
Nvidia
HTC
LG
Samsung
Motorola
eBay - Skype

...and a bunch more. This is much bigger than iPhone. Give it some time. You'll see.

I don't think the article is correct unless i'm reading this wrong.

Your article suggest the that google itself is developing a hardware device for their android platform...what's the source on this?

' "..to develop a mobile device based on the company’s mobile operation and development platform, Android." '

You mentioned a Nov release in the article, but I believe they're releasing android via an HTC hardware....it's been a while since i looked last.

Just trying to sort out the confusion.

I'm not arguing for a second that the Google phone won't be better. I have never used an Iphone and have no real use for most of the features on it so I won't be getting it or the Google phone any time soon.

That said look at the number of MP3 players out there. Many are better. Almost all of them are cheaper and yet the are crushed by the Ipod. People skip work to stand in line and get the Iphone. It isn't about the service. It isn't about the apps. It isn't about functionality or cost. Simply put the Iphone is cool. Apple is brilliant at their marketing and unless you can either convince people that your phone is cooler or you can make is so cheap that it can be sold for next to nothing it will be very hard to beat the Iphone.

Maybe it will, but so far when it comes to phones and Ipods, Apple has slain all comers.

Guess you guys haven't seen the Google/Sprint/Comcast/Time Warner/Clearwire deal yet. Can you say mobile Wimax? There just happens to be a Nokia Wimax phone with Android on it in the lab where I am. And let me tell you once they work out the last few bugs that thing is going to rock. Broadband speeds on your phone using VOIP? Talk about kick ass.

a couple buddies of mine now have the new iphone, and you know what? it doesn't really come through on all the hype in my opinion. nice phone/device, but really not that practical in my opinion for the cost. LG's new mobile device is just as nice, and not half the drain on my pocketbook. i already have an ipod, so the iphone, really not a big deal...
