anyone lived in a state where they passed a no smoking law

in all bars and restaurants..

what happened there?

buzzy 12-31-2007 04:42 AM

uk.

nothing...

Ross 12-31-2007 04:44 AM

I live in Scotland, we've been smoke free in public places since March 2006 and its the best thing the Government ever did for us. I love being able to go to the pub to watch football matches and not come home stinking of other peoples bad habits! I don't even let people smoke in my house either, why should I have to put up with it? Its my house therefore my rules.

WiredGuy 12-31-2007 04:45 AM

Its been around for a while, you'll adapt. As a non-smoker, its great not having to breathe in second hand smoke.

Yup, the UK. Bars, clubs and pubs became much more pleasant places to be. Everybody spends half their time freezing outside the place smoking now.

munki 12-31-2007 04:49 AM

California has had laws in that direction for years... to the point of annoyance sometimes.

Can't even smoke on the public beach anymore...

Corn Dogg 12-31-2007 04:50 AM

Florida. Nothing really happened. People voted and the law was passed...

teksonline 12-31-2007 04:52 AM

whatever happened to america?

they had dedicated smoking areas at my college campus. The hike pissed me off at first (the smoking sections were very far from .... everything), until I realized it was a great way to bum a smoke from a new person just about every day.

Slap Dot 12-31-2007 05:39 AM

I'm from Maryland and it takes affect soon.

Not excited. When i'm at the bar slamming beers, I love to sit there and smoke a cig.

Majority rule.

teksonline 12-31-2007 05:45 AM

Ya know whats funny, When I used to work at a major ballpark, there was smoking, and even smoking in the stands at the time (since it was a park)

In 6 years I was there, I never heard or seen one person complain about the smoke, or the air or anything.. while walking about...

But now In the last couple years the park has gone, total smoke free, cept for 2 smoking area's both outside the gates.. As a customer to watch the games, thats all that I heard walking from food/beer stands to seat in how bad the place stunk from the smoking areas. Its like Now, 80% of the people are complaining about the smoke, even the smokers because they can now smell it travel thru and it is so condensed by like 20 times, it smells like that smell you get cleaning beer bottles with butts out after a major party thruought the entire "pathway" of the park as the wind blows. Pretty Fucking nasty

Makes that hot dog at the game oh so much more tasty.. NOT

Anyhow, Illinois is now smoke free bars and restaruants as of the 1st of january.. I don't smoke anymore but i think its the stupidest thing ever...

But it made me learn something... the city is way prepared for the loss... I never know of this law till a day ago... But it now explains. the 100% rise in business licenses , and liquor licenses costs.. and to make up for the lost money in taxes from cigs being sold in bars... they now tack on a 5% bottle water tax.. first in the country to do so...

Fucking slick fuckers these polititians they are... Way ahead of the game

teksonline 12-31-2007 06:00 AM

yeah right and 80% of america has glaucoma... rock on!

cranki 12-31-2007 06:00 AM

yep, nothing... smokers smoke outside, they have heaters there...

PornMogul 12-31-2007 06:02 AM

California and even in chicago. People smoke outside or quit. Its the way it should be.

[ScreaM] 12-31-2007 06:17 AM

No but smoking in public places is prohibited but no one follows the law anyway.

Doctor Dre 12-31-2007 06:22 AM

Quebec

The Nightlife dropped a bit for the first 6 months then everything went back up as usual

BuggyG 12-31-2007 07:31 AM

been like that all year here
and have to say I like it
before wasn't noticable cause everywhere ya went people smoked
now.. moment someone does and leave whereever the person was, you notice it on your clothes right away

as an ex-smoker, I enjoy it now. No smoke anywhere. and if they wanna go freeze their butts (no pun intended) for a smoke.. by all means. It's their lives

FredIsMe 12-31-2007 07:47 AM

Canada. The bars and restaurants bitched. The dumpy ones, who's customer base were smokers, closed, but the rest stayed open.

FredIsMe 12-31-2007 07:48 AM

Oh yeah! The bingo halls closed too

problem is, all the places just smell of stale alcohol and sweat now

Sosa 12-31-2007 08:48 AM

I wish they would do it around here.

L-Pink 12-31-2007 09:09 AM

An acquaintance had to close his cigar-bar when a no-smoking ordnance passed. Hate to have anyone get second hand smoke after entering a cigar-bar.

In America a man was basically told to close his business, lose his investment and time, lay off his employees because someone might be offended by legal activities taking place in that business. This in a state where tobacco is the largest crop.

UniqueD 12-31-2007 09:19 AM

Been several years here in NY too. It's nice not to have to come home from the bar and automatically take a shower and wash your clothes because you are saturated in cigarette smoke.

and the DEA still goes in and busts the people for it..
It has gotten out of hand with the people permitted to sell it.. Some are more like dealers than sellers insofar as the money they make...

Andy Servers4Less 12-31-2007 11:19 AM

NY and NJ. Its weird because now its almost like you could never smoke in bars. When I go to Philly its really strange to see people smoking indoors. We have a bar in Red Bank NJ, where smoking is still allowed indoors though because it is a "cigar" bar. Its packed and it seems like people go there just to smoke as much as they can indoors. Hot girls there though. Ok, Im done.

Gerco 12-31-2007 11:23 AM

so far it has been bad for cincinnati. you can smoke anyplace right across the river.. lots of clubs etc have shut down over lack of business, but it has been GREAT for the KY side

After Shock Media 12-31-2007 11:25 AM

The law itself is just wrong and it should of been left up to consumer demand. If enough customers wanted a smoke free establishment market demand would of created them. Now one does not have a personal business choice.

Lonny 12-31-2007 11:29 AM

thats been a law here for a while, cant smoke at beaches bars clubs what have you, back in feb or so Calabasas doesnt allow smokers to gathered near entrances to businesses also that city has been trying to ban smoking in apartment buildings.

woj 12-31-2007 11:35 AM

Nothing really happened, people just stopped smoking inside.. :thumbsup

Brother Bilo 12-31-2007 11:36 AM

Ya, Arizona did it this last year. I hate it. I can see from the non smokers side how it's much better, but why should the government decide for everyone? Why can't it just be left up to the establishment as to whether smoking is allowed or not?

I would think that a bar that advertises itself as a non smoking bar in an area where the other bars smoke could stand to make some good business.

This law really pissed me off when the bar I used to go to all the time was empty inside because everyone in the bar was out on the patio smoking.

Luscious Media 12-31-2007 11:39 AM

The law has been in place here for a few years. It absolutely destroyed bar business when it first came out but the bars that lasted through it are pretty much back to normal now.

I'm a smoker and I would go outside to smoke before the law was enacted, if it wasn't 40 below or raining that is. It's actually much more pleasant in bars now that there isn't a constant heavy cloud of smoke.

The real benefit was to the local casinos. They allow smoking. Needless to say the casino bars are always jammed. Go figure.

dial 12-31-2007 11:44 AM

But its usually the walking out that sucks, as the smokers stand right outside the door, and you have to go though a cloud to get out.

SkeetSkeet 12-31-2007 11:49 AM

yeah no smoking in city limits here
