Today I bought my first dog...a BLACK PUG

I love him he is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cute!

Although he have been having diarrhea since i brought him like 6 hours ago he took a shit 3x anyone know what to do he is like 6-7 weeks old.

Flynn 09-05-2007 04:09 PM

post some pics! My pup had diarrhea last week. we had to take her to the vet and put her on some meds and change her diet.

TheDatingNetworkCameron 09-05-2007 04:09 PM

He will have diarrhea until he gets used to his new food that you've put him on. I've got 2 1 year old pugs and got them at 6 weeks old so been thru that myself. Just walk him lots and be ready for alot of accidents because after hes only a puppy.

Sarah_Jayne 09-05-2007 04:31 PM

6-7 weeks old is pretty young to be away from its mother so you are going to have to go through that for a bit until it is few weeks older. Hang in there though because it will get better.

Welcome to the pug club :) My pug is nearly a year and a half old and she is wonderful (so is my spaniel..though she chews a lot more!).

As far as walking lots goes - be careful with that as pugs can over heat rather easily. So, watch them in the heat and listen to them and know when to pick them up and go back home.

CherryLipsRosa 09-05-2007 04:48 PM

Congrats, i hope to be the next one on the list of proud pug owners.

cherrylula 09-05-2007 04:50 PM

I hear they like to eat poo.

Ill post pics tommorow

yes today the owner of the parents told me they bought him a new kind of food...hopefully he will adjust quickly....

he didn't get any shots yet either so I was told not to take him to walks yet until he is 2.5 months old and got his first shots.

Topher49er 09-05-2007 04:52 PM

I don't want to over state anything, but if you send my wife some pics - she might lick your nuts!!!

My vet is building an addition to his building. I told him he really should name it after me. Though in all fairness, besides the $2500 "specialist" bill to find out my 11 year old's back legs will get worse instead of better, a few xrays when they've eaten something that didn't make it all the way through, and one lump removed from each of the older dogs, I haven't had much above the normal wear and tear.

Peaches 09-05-2007 06:09 PM

The "puppy" (he's over a year old but since he's the youngest, I fear he'll always be called "The Puppy") is downstairs making the STRANGEST snoring noises. I swear it sounds like a little baby trying to talk. At least I THINK it's him, lol.

WarChild 09-05-2007 06:11 PM

Pug's are retarded cats, not dogs.

Mine gets her poo eaten by the spaniel. The pug would never sink so low.

Parker often sounds like a guinea pig. Once you get used to it you miss it if you don't have it around.

nico-t 09-05-2007 06:48 PM

congrats for coming out of the closet!

GAMEFINEST 09-05-2007 06:51 PM

good stuff , post some pics ...

on the other note...vet bills are fucking expensive ...

candyflip 09-05-2007 07:32 PM

All my friends and family love mine and all want one. So...we had her bred this past weekend. Hopefully we have enough to cover the whole family.

PLEASE make sure you have your vet on speed dial.

Some breed experts will also caution new owners to be aware of the need for Cesarean Section when Pug litters are born. This breed is not one that has a particularly easy time with the birth of puppies. If you are thinking about breeding your Pug later on, you may want to talk at length with other breeders or with veterinarians to make sure you are prepared for any special situations that may arise.

Sarah_Jayne 09-06-2007 12:23 AM

How old is she Candyflip? I thought she was fairly new to your family.

Turf 09-06-2007 01:56 AM

thread is worthless without pictures!

Something in the back of my head makes me think they aren't real concerned about that. Ariel's mother was 6 months old when Ariel was born (if you go by the supposed AKC records which BYB and puppymills are known to alter like crazy). Obviously WAY too young to breed.

My 15 year old is the only one from a reputable breeder and she's the only one who conforms to breed standard. Some of the pugs I see at the pug picnics (oh, shut up!) are so far out of spec that it's pathetic. People think "how cute" and just breed them w/o knowing lineage, having them genetically tested, etc.

The Puppy is a result of what they call "kitchen breeders" - just do a litter or two. His sibling died during birth and he was born with water on the brain and a hole in his heart. He also had parvo by the time rescue got him (they suspect he was around 4 weeks old). To say he's a bit slow in the head now is an understatement - but he's mine :thumbsup

Sarah_Jayne 09-06-2007 06:09 AM

Parker came from a great breeder and Maggie (the spaniel) came from a woman that was totally profit driven and pretty much a kitchen breeder. I am sure she gave us Maggie too early (and I think 6 weeks to have a new puppy is way too early..but hope the poster's pug is fine).

As a result since we have had them (got them one week apart) Parker has only been to the vet once for anything other than her shots and that was because she ate something she shouldn't have had. Maggie on the other hand, was at the emergency vet across the street the third day we had her because she couldn't keep anything down (now I think she just was removed from her mother too soon) and been to the vet about five times for various digestive issues.

Please do not assume anything. We done plenty of research and are working with the best breeder in our area. She is 20 months old and this is her third heat. The entire process was approved by my Vet...who I worked for, for a few years while in college when I acutually had the intention to become one myself. Had we not gotten a go ahead from the Vet, this wouldn't be happening right now.

No need to worry about the dogs conforming to standards. George, the stud, is a champion with both the AKC and the CKC (in Canada) as were both of Jello's parents. We spent more time researching and in the end paid a premium for a pup we knew would perform well at the shows, as that's something my girlfried is really interested in. She'll begin her show career sometime next year.

We have NO INTENTION to become a for profit breeder. We also volunteer and work closely with a local rescue. Our other pup is a resuce and we always have a foster dog in the house. We've seen dogs that been over bred and it's cruel. The last one we had was 6 years old, but looked 20 as a result of being bred every cycle with no break. It's not cool and something we'd never do. We don't even plan to sell the puppies. They're all going to family and friends that we know will take good care of them.

So, like I said when I started, please don't assume. We are well prepared and can't wait for the puppies.

Mea culpa. If I was mistaken, I apologize :)

Great pic, Oracle!!

Thanks, I know where you're coming from though. Being concerned and passionate isn't a bad thing. But rest assured, I am pretty sure we'll have everything covered in the next 60 days. :winkwink:

My dog and her health are my top concern...sometimes even more so than my own. She's my baby. As there's always a risk with something like this, we are most certainly doing everything we can to reduce it.

Here's a pic of George the stud. Not as cute as Oracle's new puggy, but one very handsome pug nonetheless.

All my rescues were BYB/Puppy mill pugs before I got her (she and her mother were both placed in rescue by the owner - mother was put down last year but was 15 at the time) and the difference in body, nose, tail, legs, and health are amazingly different. Be sure and post pics when the puppies are born.

I have a lot of friends I met through rescue who are breeders so I know it's not easy. And as I'm sure you know, as popular as pugs are, probably only 1 out every 1000 pup born was born from a responsible breeder. :( Again, I apologize for putting you in that light - seems you've got the bases covered :)

Sarah_Jayne 09-06-2007 09:01 AM

George the Stud looks like he could be Parker's brother...same wrinkles when she is putting on her worried face.

Sarah_Jayne 09-06-2007 09:02 AM

Parker is from champion lines and I think it shows in her body structure, etc but I would never show her even if she didn't have that patch of really cute white on her ear (said in best mommy voice). Though, I do love that her grandfather was called Pugsy Malone.

Sarah_Jayne 09-06-2007 09:04 AM

We should form a 'Ridge Cleaners of GFY' group.
