Should people with mental problems be allowed to own guns?
 

I saw CNN or something news channel the other day talking about the Virginia gunman and they were saying the law does not allow you to lock up people with mental problems unless they are a danger to themselves or others. The inferance being that this is a weakness in the law and if you could detain anyone with mental problems things like this wouldn't have happenned!

I was thinking maybe it would be a better idea to just not let people with mental health problems have access to firearms?

i believe there is a question asking if you have ever been diagnosed with a mental illness on the form that you fill out when you get your background check when legaly buying a firearm.

I may be wrong, cant remember if i've ever bought a firearm or not. I may or may not have any guns.

when one guy has one and nobody else does, things can get very bad. Criminals will carry one, well just because they are criminals and thats what they do. Keep in mind, it wasnt illegal for the Cho guy to own a gun. It was illegal for him to kill 32 people.

Now consider this. If the law abiding people were all carrying guns, would Cho have been able to kill 32 people? I dont think so.

Making guns illegal will NOT solve anything. There are already way too many available. Making them illegal will not stop gun crime. Its already illegal to kill people, and that didnt stop murders from happening. Its illegal to drink and drive, doesnt seem to have stopped it. Its illegal to exceed the speed limit, but show me someone here who says they have never been speeding, and I'll point out a liar to you.

I'm not saying that making sure everyone is armed would be a better situation, but making guns illegal isnt going to stop things at all. But perhaps if the criminals knew that everyone else was armed, they may reconsider trying to hurt people when they know they would probably get themselves killed before they could finish thier act of crime.
