Does money genuinely make you happy?

Well, does it?

There is a scene in the movie Blow, when Ray Liota is talking to his boy:

"Sometimes you're flush, and sometimes you're bust...when you are up, it is never as good as it seems and when you are down you never feel like you are you're gonna be up again......BUT LIFE GOES ON!!!"

Would you say you share a similar perspective concerning money?

aico 02-27-2007 04:39 PM

Most peoples' biggest stress in life is paying bills, credit cards, insurance, etc. If you have enough money where these things are not a worry to you, then that relieves a huge amount of stress and worry from your life.

Less stress = more happy.

I would definitely agree, but what if you have a large disposble income, do you think that brings happiness or is money just a game at that point?

m0307 02-27-2007 04:44 PM

maybe this a question for some of the "high rollers" on gfy

SomeCreep 02-27-2007 04:48 PM

"Money" itself, no. "Making money", yes.

INever 02-27-2007 04:49 PM

having lots of money, yes, happy.......

Scott McD 02-27-2007 04:50 PM

Yes. Money can make you happy.

But when you see so many fucked in the head celebs with all their millions, it makes you wonder...

Babaganoosh 02-27-2007 04:57 PM

Money can't buy happiness...

but it can be rented.

MikesTraffic 02-27-2007 04:58 PM

I have everything I need right now to make me happy (friends, family and coo tools) the only way my life could get better is if i made more money so i could pay debts off

tenletters 02-27-2007 04:59 PM

money cannot buy happiness but it can payoff unhappiness.

Off the top of my head I can think of a hundred things that suck about being poor and none in regards to having money.

pornguy 02-27-2007 05:00 PM

Money buys a lot more than most people think,

Spunky 02-27-2007 06:07 PM

AMEN! Money in and of itself does not bring happiness.
But what you do with it definitely can bring lots of smiles!

FetiXXX 02-27-2007 06:16 PM

Yep, my thoughts as well. Once you have enough to be happy, no worries to pay any bills and live a life the way you want it, all this "disposable" income is only good for toys and the more you have, the bigger the toys...and new worries are around the corner, you can't send you children to school alone, you need cameras and guards around your house, etc.

I think "too much" is as bad as "not enough", as long as you are somewhere between these extremes, life is great !

Absolutely right. If you make money with doing something that you love, it can be the total happiness...

Unless you like to do something else that you hate, just to appreciate the things that you love to do much more...

BusterBunny 02-27-2007 06:42 PM

no but the things i buy with it does:thumbsup

Fresh 02-27-2007 06:45 PM

More $$$ = Less stress & headache
More $$$ = More investment for growth to make more $$$
More $$$ = More tools to make more $$$
More $$$ = Less work involved to make more $$$
More $$$ = More happy

More $$$ = able to make other people happy

psili 02-27-2007 07:00 PM

I think it depends on the person.

You can have a young executive who's worked his ass up, thrashing everyone in their path, to be wealthy, only to end up with a divorce or two, maybe a few children, and a huge bank account, but nothing to show for it except a nice car and house.

Then you can have the young executive who's worked his up up, thrashed around, got wealthy, got older and realized money wasn't everything. Then started to give some back to the world.

Then you have the poor guy, with a few kids, working to bloody knuckles washing dishes who comes home to what he thinks is a heaven of a family with a fat wife, a couple of crying children and a Hungry Man micro meal on the table for dinner.

All perspective.

For me... for now, I just want the padding to feel safe as the wife and I think about children and keeping them safe.

*shrug*

Ben Affleck in Boiler Room:

Whoever says money can't buy happiness doesn't fucking have any.

bausch 02-27-2007 07:26 PM

Of course money buys happiness, at least it does for ME, because I'm a very materialistic, shallow and superficial person. Other people might care more about things like family, love, and all that stuff, but for me I really like money.

People who have millions but still are unhappy like Britney are fucken TOOLS.
Try buying clothes at Walmart and eating at McDonalds and drive a pinto and see how fucken happy you are.

Having money is power and that's the ultimate high.

The more I make the happier I become.

xNetworx 02-27-2007 07:29 PM

Yes... Since our society is set up around money.

Were you being sarcastic in this post ?

bausch 02-27-2007 07:30 PM

If you make more money it also makes you more confident, more confidence to face the world, talk to people, not so self-conscious and uncomfortable in your own skin. It makes you feel important, and other people respect you more. Fuck it, I'll be honest, other people's opinions are important to me, I care about what others think.

If you have more money you can also improve your looks, anything that you weren't born with you can buy. Hollywood stars didn't wake up looking like that, it takes a lot of money in order to look so "naturally good". The better you look, again the more confidence you have, and it makes life more easier and pleasant.

Nicky 02-27-2007 07:32 PM

Up to a certain point money means happiness. If I had 1 billion or 10 billion I dont really think would matter much, If I make $1k per month or $10k per month does a huge difference.

Every person in this world has different values and morals. Because you might believe in something doesn't mean that I do.

I am not close to my family so there's nothing lost there. Love is never conditional because the other person can always cheat on you or leave you.

If you have money you will always have security and you will always be able to take care of yourself.

I have been broke, and I have had more than enough money. From my experience it is much better when you have money. Life is very miserable when you are broke. At least it was for me, I was very depressed.

I am not being sarcastic at all.

Everyone is different.

I also had a bad childhood and I think part of it had to do with the fact that we didn't have money. It sucks when you get picked on in school because you didn't have the right clothes to wear. I would never EVER want to be broke again.

Very true, 10k per month versus 1k a month makes a HUGE difference. 80 mil or 100 mil it doesn't matter....

That's one of the few honest responses I've seen.

Thanks man. You didn't throw down some premaddona bullshit like most and I can kind of see where you're coming from with that.

:)

... Just don't let the gentle love of everyday life pass you by -- as gay as that sounds.

Thanks... And to me "more than enough money" is not even necessarily being rich. It just means having more than enough to pay all your bills, enough left over to save, and still have enough to buy whatever you want... nothing extravagant like a Ferrari or a mansion, but just about anything reasonable...

I think being poor for a long time also damages your health and makes you age more, mainly due to the constant stress and not being able to afford good health care, going to the doctors etc

I know rich people have stress too but I think the stress of being poor is more severe because it is constant, and it's very different when you have stress from having too much money versus worrying whether you can pay the rent or else go homeless...

The stress from being poor is of a different magnitude and more horrible...
