My PC died today - should I....

1. Get a Apple instead
2. New PC
3. Go fucking hang myself

???

:(

madawgz 01-26-2007 01:22 PM

whats wrong with your computer?

just wont start?

wdsguy 01-26-2007 01:22 PM

get a New PC

Chris 01-26-2007 01:24 PM

i voted for hanging self
i know how it feels :(

baddog 01-26-2007 01:27 PM

Hanging is a lousy option, especially if doing it yourself.

Usually what happens is that you don't do it from high enough, so the neck isn't broken (which should happen in a proper hanging) and you end up suffering a slow death by choking, with lots of time for regret.

OTOH, I would not get an Apple.

Methodcash Rick 01-26-2007 01:57 PM

Oystein, get an Apple man..

You'll hate it for about a week, then you'll get used to it and wonder why you didn't switch sooner.

Come over to the light side of the force.. ;)

P.S. When's teh uber update for MAS going to be released?

Nazgrel 01-26-2007 02:04 PM

There are few things that can happen to a PC that will fuck it up beyond repair. So unless you: flooded it whit water, fired up a campfire inside it or had a direct ligthning hit in the chasis, you should just get out your tools and some spare parts and fix it, shouldnt be that hard and will be way cheaper than getting a newone..

ServerGenius 01-26-2007 02:08 PM

get an apple if you don't work with files from other people, get a new P.C. if you don't want to end spending hours searching the web for shitty conversion tools
so you can sort of see what somebody else tried to show you

split_joel 01-26-2007 02:08 PM

Regardless if you can fix your PC get a MAC. Macs are much more stable many applications are optimized for the OS and Processor, and if you want to you can dual boot windows.

OY 01-26-2007 02:15 PM

I am too depressed to answer you all individually.

OY 01-26-2007 02:21 PM

make daily or weekly images of your hdd and store them on a server or something. Scheduled job to run at a time you're not working on the pc
I know this isn't something you didn't know already but it always feels
good to tell people when their hdd died :winkwink:

BitAudioVideo 01-26-2007 02:24 PM

replace the hard drive, send the dead hard drive for data recovery, get out a big check for the data recovery.

ServerGenius 01-26-2007 02:26 PM

yup datarecovery companies can get everything off as long as there's a few molecules left of the hdd.

goldmine 01-26-2007 02:27 PM

PC!

Core2duo man! the best there is!

Klen 01-26-2007 02:29 PM

PC is best.DO NOT change it for fucking MAC.

I've used SpinRite to save a few hard drives and recover data. Sometimes it takes 24+ hours to go thru a whole disc scan but it's worked great for me.

I just fixed a 80 gig drive on an old WinXP ME that was fried - no spinning, no recognition by the bios - nothing. I ran SpinRite from a floppy boot disk and it fixed everything to the point I could login and save the data onto another system.

It works!

so so true, and the only reason you'll hate it is because you're trying to do all the things you're used to doing in windows. Like clicking Apply Now buttons and defragmenting your hard drive ;-)

Actually they have Core Duo's, not Core2 Duos. Quite a difference.

Don't buy Dell or HP or Sony, they all suck.

The only good products Dell have are their Monitors (which are made by philips), and their servers cos of their awesomeness same day service agreements.

Build your own PC. When you buy a prebuild pc, you buy it with all the extra crap installed off the Motherboard Utility Disk, or Company Apps that Dell/HP/Sony add. This is what almost always causes problems on PC's and then you end up hating windows. Building it yourself and installing only what you need, you will have less problems.

Wrong. They have Core2Duos, all Apple consumer computers have core2duo except the mac mini which has core duo.

Scott McD 01-26-2007 05:38 PM

Go for a hanging. And get someone to post the video on YouTube... :thumbsup

No, it is not. The current 'quad core' cpus are not true quads, those won't be out for a bit. For now stick with a core 2 duo.

GhazAllOva 01-26-2007 05:57 PM

I'm usually a cheap fucker when it comes to PCs, so instantly Macs are out of the question. I usually get the cheapest Dell I can find with the 2nd best current processor (cause usually the best is a rip-off like the quad-cores). Then I upgrade. I never add anything and try removing everything they give me. Usually comes out to about $300-400 (check eBay for Dell coupons, usually some good ones there). Then I NewEgg everything else (video card, extra HDD, more RAM, DVD-burner). All together comes out to under $1k usually.

That's what I've done for my last 5 computers. Before I would build it completely from scratch, but case+power+motherboard+cpu itself usually goes for a few hundred so I've been sticking with my Dell deals and they're doing fine.

You killed thousands of your own people, developed a weapons program then moved it to Syria before a U.S. invasion, got the whole-hearted support of every Liberal in the world, were overthrown and lost your sons in the same war, were hung by a puppet court, and now enjoy fame in the minds of conspiracy theorists who say you're still alive and living in the Bahamas?

Wow. Intense day, I guess!

King Adam 01-26-2007 06:40 PM

Tough call man. If you are just using it for email, intetnet and busines communication, I'd say get a new PC. Apple is the shit and great for multimedia but when you spend 15+ years using a PC, it makes it hard to go to a MAC and get used to it.
