Lesson number: 1
Comparison of "your" and "you're"

Incorrect usage of "your", example:
"Your an idiot"
Correct usage of "your", example:
"Your stats are impressive"

Incorrect usage of "you're", example:
"Can I borrow you're car?"
Correct usage of "you're", example:
"You're an idiot"

Lesson number: 2
Comparison of "there" and "their"

Incorrect usage of "there", example:
"There a bunch of fags"
Correct usage of "there", example:
"Look at those fags standing over there"

Incorrect usage of "their", example:
"I went their on vacation"
Correct usage of "their", example:
"I stole their money"

Lesson number: 2
Comparison of "then" and "than"

Incorrect usage of "then", example:
"The new version is better then the old version"

"I went shopping, then I went to the cinema"

Incorrect usage of "than", example:

If English is your primary language, at least learn to spell properly, you motherfuckers. Otherwise...

"If your an idiot, than go stand over their!"

mjrools23 06-28-2002 06:57 AM

Yes sir. I know my grammar.

Tipsy 06-28-2002 06:59 AM

This seems to appear at least a few times a month so how could you forget it?

to
too

Can't be bothered to do the correct/incorrect thing.

hahmike 06-28-2002 07:03 AM

"Your an idiot" is the worst.

When someone says that, it defeats the whole purpose of the point they're trying to make. And you just know that some 'tard will most likely reply to this thread with that exact line.

Spelling errors are fine... not everyone has perfect spelling, grammar, etc... but at least learn to fucking spell essential words/phrases if you're primary language is English.

And all the fuckers out there can quit checking MY posts for spelling errors.

Sponsor/Sponser is another one.

You've got a point there.

If this thread gets to any sort of size what's the betting somebody bitches about not having English as a primary language despite the fact that you've already mentioned it isn't aimed at them :)

You seem pretty upset for someone that thinks life is too short to get upset about 'small shit'.

You forgot the difference between lose and loose. Very common around here.

I've seen lots of people say they are loosing their minds.

Doesn't matter what the primary language is. Learn English if you're going to write English, period.

BTW, it's "your primary language" :Graucho

Let's not shoot the man down before we consider his point of view.

We are selling to guys with their dicks in their hands and they may move on if we do not get our grammar correct.

Get out your guns.

I don't ever remember coming to GFY with my dick in my hand. I don't come to GFY to buy porn, nor do I ever remember fellow webmasters trying to sell porn memberships to me whilst on GFY.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

You see I shoot pictures with the "User" in mind. The webmaster and the editor are just the route to him.

And anyway your nick should'nt be hahamike, not with your sense of humour!!:)

I don't know... I saw that AdWealth had a bunch of banners saying "You ass is mine!". I'm not sure if the incorrect grammar will cause people to click on them less or more. I will have to try it, even if it's against my principles :)

LoveAsianChicks 07-01-2002 05:20 AM

I feel your pain...

really. I do.

Babaganoosh 07-16-2002 09:53 AM

hahmike, I love you man!

I can't tell you how much that shit irritates me. The whole your/you're thing used to really get me, but the sheer ignorance of then/than is beyond comprehension.

I guarantee that I would not have passed 4th grade if I didn't know the difference between these words. I can't believe there are so many "adults" out there that don't know the difference.

"Your and idiot, I make more money then you." :feels-hot

gothweb 07-16-2002 09:53 AM

Here's the thing...

When I pay someone money, I want to know I am giving my money to someone respectable and intelligent. It helps me know they are not fly-by-night. So horrible language turns me off... I put away my credit card. I don't like hanging out with stupid people, and I certainly don't like giving them money if I can help it.

When I want to work on a business transaction with someone... traffic, promotion, content, or even everyday stuff, I likewise need to feel that I am working with someone who is respectable and intelligent. Again, it shows that they are well-established and competent.

A few mistakes here and there does not make me think someone is an idiot. Everyone makes typos, and spells something wrong on occasion. What sets off my alarms is the sort of thing this thread is about... People who just can't handle the basics.

You don't need to be educated to be honest. You don't need to have good grammar to be worth working with. Bad grammar doesn't automatically make you stupid... However, an impression of being intelligent, literate, and educated will go a long way towards making you look competent and respectable. How you use language is a huge part of what impression you make, both consciously and subconsciously.

Is it so much to ask that people try to use correct English? I find it bizarre how many people take offense at this thread. Doing something improperly isn't the default, you know that, right? If you use crappy English, you stand out, and not in a good way... Who wouldn't want to improve the first impression they make?

It's just that 99.9% of the ppl who use this board are not native English speakers...

hahmike 07-16-2002 12:23 PM

more like 12 to 15%
