I have constant panic attacks, and this is what I do to calm myself down. It doesn't always work but most of the time it does:

I control my breathing as quickly as possible as if you wait too long you may not be able to. Breathe in as slowly as you can, breathe out as slowly as you can. While doing this, focus in on your heart. As you breathe in and out slowly, this makes it easier for you to "feel" your heart. After you locate your heart, keep focus and attempt to slow your heart beat. All you really need is to slow your heart beat a couple of beats. For me, this lets me know that I'm in control of my body, not some chemical imbalance. After you have control of your heart, slowly 'lift' yourself out of the state your in.

If you have trouble breathing in and out easily during your anxiety attack, another trick which sometimes works for me is to blow on your thumb or another finger (not suck it, blow air across it). As you blow on it you'll get the same effect as breathing in and out slowly, and sometimes blowing out air is easier to do than controlling your breathing right off.

I'll try to control the breathing more....thanks

It's a very scary feeling, it makes you feel like you are having a heart attack constantly. I usually have panic attacks daily, most often right before I try to go to sleep. As long as I keep busy I rarely if ever have them, but as soon as I get still and my mind starts to slow down bam, panic attack city. I learned to control my attacks pretty well over the years (have gotten good at controlling my heart beat as well, I can usually push it under 50 beats a minute while focusing). I never wanted to get all drugged up... doctor wanted to put me on clonazepam, told me to take them before I went to sleep, but I told him no. I hate medication and I think I do a well enough job with just controlling my heart beat.

For some reason I've been having them more often lately. I think you are right...the busier you are, the less they occur. And it really does make you feel like you're having a heart attack. I really don't want to take medicine either, but if this goes on any longer I think I'm gonna have to visit my doc.

true, if you jackoff it goes away temporarily...

but if its serious, you need to go for a nice 30 minute walk, and if it happens again when you get back, go for another walk...

I had them in my early 20's. I remember feeling like I was going to die. I went to the doctor and tried a few different medicines but they all made me feel worse. At the time I was under a lot of stress and was smoking an 8th a day. Whenever I would get them I would just try to stay calm, work on my breathing and they would go away. I decided to kick weed for a while and started playing basketball again. The next thing I knew they were gone. I'd get them occasionally after that but I would just tell myself it was all in my head and they would go away quick. Its all mental you just have to learn to beat it. Whatever you do don't smoke weed or do anything to induce the attack further, it will only make you feel worse. At least this was my experience.

Try to see your doctor he'll advice you what to do.Relax and mix with people morte often.

Pandemos 07-06-2006 02:33 AM

Is your anxiety caused by something medical or a real-world issue like money issues, a relationship etc?

if they're serious, you might want to look into meds. Zoloft is really REALLY helpful, serious hardcore exercise - BJJ or something like that - is helpful as well.

It's not a life threatening condition, but it sure does feel like it. Get well soon, get some help.

weed causes panic attacks if you smoke it long enough.

Zuss 07-06-2006 03:26 AM

Try not to think about it. That helped me.

Barefootsies 07-06-2006 08:46 AM

I know what you're feeling brotha. I've had them on and off for years. I still get them, but not as much now.

I would get them more when I would take my antihistamines. They would make my heart pound, and such harder, and I would not be able to sleep. Which would then give me the panic attacks. The Dr/Pharmacist said it's a side effect, and there is nothing you can do about it with them. :321GFY Which is lovely when you suffer from allergies, and sinuses hafl the year.

They gave me Xanex, and continue to do so. Although I do not take them but maybe 1-2 times a month if doing nothing out of the ordinary. Every now and then no walking, breating, eating, resting will get rid of them. I take a Xanex, andI'm back to normal next day, and calm the fuck down that day so I can go to sleep.

Note: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE XANEX 3 TIMES A DAYS AS INSTRUCTED. You can take as needed. For me, it's those odd days, or when I travel mainly.

But I found eating my meals out of my office has helped. I walk daily for 30-60 minutes through the mall, so I have some scenery (I am a fast walker). I also eat better. Cut out fast food, salt, sugar, and minimze my caffine.

I also golf, and lay some other sports to help tire me out. I do not eat before bed, and most importantly, I follow a routine before bedtime.

I do things in a certain, menotinous order so that I am tricking out my body to know it's shut down for bed time. It does work. Takes some time to do, but once you do it enough. You are out like a nightlight w/o the help of any pills, etc.

:2 cents:

Exercise, relaxation techniques, eat well. That's it.

If that doesn't work, go seek some prof. help and get cognitive - behavioral therapy.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT SMOKE WEED IF YOU ARE HAVING PANIC ATTACKS! WORST ADVICE EVER GIVEN ON A BOARD FULL OF ARMCHAIR DOCTORS!

melatonin and sleepytime celestial seasonings teas should help you tremendously. many anxiety situations are directly related to stress. unless you seriously reduce your stress level, your anxiety will not subside. smoking pot will make you worse.

I know it's mainly due to some high level stress. I'm not planning on smoking weed...stupid thing to do. I guess I need to exercise more and control my breathing...or go see a doctor, which I don't want to do.

any kind of hardcore exercise. I mentioned BJJ because it's my personal preference, but anything that takes total concentration and is a bigtime workout will do.

Mr. Blue 07-06-2006 12:38 PM

Not easy to deal with anxiety attacks. Best advice is learning how to control your breathing, practice breathing slowly and steady, and when an attack comes start that. Also you should consider what vitamins / supplements you should be taking. I take a few vitamins a day, C, B complex, a multi-vitamin, and also some flax seed oil. Also strenous workouts help to reduce the frequency of the attacks (at least it does with me).

Just remember though when you are having a panic attack, just roll with it, and just keep saying it's all mental...it'll make the panic attack subside quicker.
