Fact: NIN = EMO

It's emotional music made for girly teen boys.

face it, if you like NIN you like the emo.

PS: Depeche Mode is emo too.

Libertine 11-18-2005 11:22 AM

My Chemical Romance = emo.
NIN = pop.

Intrigue 11-18-2005 11:23 AM

I'm far from emo and i like NIN, but then again i don't listen to music so i can be labelled, i listen to it cuz i like what it sounds like

Maxy 11-18-2005 11:26 AM

its emo-ish. He does whine alot but it's not like what is known as mainstream emo now. Which is disgusting music.

His bands before NIN were emo and he brought it into NIN as well, just added more angst and marketed it "artsy" but the anger/depression/angst/pop element of emo has always been there.

Trent Reznor is nothing but emo.

What is emo?

Now that "emo" has reached it's pop peak - the bands who were making this music but never classified as this now fall under the umbrella of the genre.

BlackCrayon 11-18-2005 11:52 AM

pretty much all music is based on some type of emotion/s.

MetaMan 11-18-2005 11:55 AM

hah not my kind of music, but i got a 6'5 270 pound skinhead buddy who just went to NIN concert yesterday that would tell you otherwise.

:1orglaugh

but you never know maybe deep down he is a teddy bear. /sarcasm

Watch your back around over emotional people. :upsidedow

:)

Martin 11-18-2005 12:20 PM

Yeah I went to the concert that NIN was Headlining in Toronto a Week ago. Watched my Favorit Band play Queens Of The Stone Age and left when NIN came on.. LOL..

Fletch do you dig QOTSA?

RawAlex 11-18-2005 12:27 PM

Music doesn't need labels. Saying NIN is EMO music is like saying "Led Zepplin fans are all druggies" or "Pink Floyd is for people who take acid". If you want to look at things in a very two dimensional way, and attempt to put a little sticky label on things, then, yeah, well... whatever.

Question: Is Prince funk, old school, electronic, hard, rap, dance, pop, metal, or soul?

Question: Is No Doubt / GS rock, alternative, funk, dance, rap, AOR, or pop?

Sticky labels don't stick well to most moving object.

your logic is stunning. country music is rap now to you :1orglaugh

music is nothing but labels.

If you take any band Fletch currently likes (you can bet theres some unintelligible screaming involved) and made them the most popular band out there, Fletch would say he doesn't like them anymore because they sold out, and would apply a derogatory label to them

Fact.

I was listening to NIN before there was a EMO..

Dirty F 11-18-2005 02:56 PM

I'm becoming less defined, as days go by
Fading away, well you might say I'm losing focus
Kind of drifting into the abstract in terms of how I see myself
Sometimes, I think I can see right through myself
Sometimes, I think I can see right through myself
Sometimes, I can see right through myself

Less concerned, about fitting into the world
Your world that is, cause it doesn't really matter anymore
(No, it doesn't really matter anymore)
No, it doesn't really matter anymore
None of this sh... really matters anymore

Yes, I am alone, but then again I always was
As far back as I can tell, I think maybe it's because
Because you were never really real to begin with
I just made you up to hurt myself

I just made you up to hurt myself
Yeah, and I just made you up to hurt myself
I just made you up to hurt myself
Yeah, and I just made you up to hurt myself
And it worked

There is no you, there is only me
There is no you, there is only me
There is no fucking you, there is only me
There is no fucking you, there is only me

Well, the tiniest little dot caught my eye
And it turned out to be a scab
And I had this funny feeling
Like I just knew it's something bad

I just couldn't leave it alone
Picking at that scab
It was a doorway trying to seal itself shut
But I climbed through

Now I'm somewhere I am not supposed to be
And I can see things I know I really shouldn't see
And now I know why now, now I know why
Things aren't as pretty on the inside

There is no you, there is only me
There is no you, there is only me
There is no fucking you, there is only me
There is no fucking you, there is only me

Pornwolf 11-18-2005 02:57 PM

Are emo guys gay?

I only ask this because they are always portrayed as fags.

I really don't know anything about the whole Emo culture which is why I'm asking.

nofx 11-18-2005 02:57 PM

i have to admit that the song "Every Day Is Exactly The Same" from with teeth owns me

potter 11-18-2005 03:01 PM

Well no matter what stupid label you want to give them. You should at least choose one which was about during their time. "emo" didn't even exsist back when NIN started out.

Oh, and Trent is a musical genius who is widely credited to making a completely new form of music and genre in the industry (I think it was with Halo 14 ). Say what you will, but you can never take that away from NIN.

most emo kids are not "gay" just very high maintenance just like a woman; in touch with their femine side; got a little bit of sugar in their tank.

Emo started in the mid 80's, probably around '85. NIN started in '88.

you have no clue on genre's of music, you obviously dont know where the term emo started or what band it referred to. ALL music is emotional if ya wanna get technical, but it was Rites of Spring in the 80's that started the genre people refer to as emo. NIN is lumped into industrial and more recently has become more mainstream electronic pop etc...

rickholio 11-18-2005 05:16 PM

Emo or no, anyone who makes a song that Johnny Cash covered has got the skills. :2 cents:

I'd also say that songs with the lyrical phrases like "I want to feel you from the inside" and "fist fuck" in situationally appropriate ways can be forgiven any associated angst. :thumbsup

Agreed. I've always been a fan of NIN.

I see Trent as a cool producer that took synthesizer based music in another direction (dark). You had Kraftwerk (a German group) in the 70's that pioneered synthezer music, which inspired Afrika Bambataa to use synthz to lay down the foundation for hip-hop in the late 70's early 80's, then you had Michael Jackson use it to make pop music (Thriller), and finally Trent Reznor to make it cool for the "life suck I want to kill myself, whatever" generation of the 90's.
