I see Trent as a cool producer that took synthesizer based music in another direction (dark). You had Kraftwerk (a German group) in the 70's that pioneered synthezer music, which inspired Afrika Bambataa to use synthz to lay down the foundation for hip-hop in the late 70's early 80's, then you had Michael Jackson use it to make pop music (Thriller), and finally Trent Reznor to make it cool for the "life suck I want to kill myself, whatever" generation of the 90's.

You are absolutely right. Industrial wasn't dark at all before NIN.

Whitehouse - Right to Kill (1983)

That's yours
That body's yours
Beat it
Fuck it
Dominate, mutilate, strangulate
Rape and bugger it
Kill it
Eat it
It's your right to kill
It's your nature
The ultimate pleasure
Kill! kill! kill!
It's your fucking right to kill
It's your fucking nature
Kill! Kill! Kill!
It's my right to kill!

hehe fine, I'm not familiar with Whitehouse. Let's just say Trent took it mainstream or is one of the more recognizable faces of industrial.

Skinny Puppy was a major direct influence on Reznor himself. Listen to some early 80s S.P. and it's virtually indistinguishable from NIN's early work... S.P. in turn were also influenced by throbbing gristle, kraftwerk and such, so it all comes back to the source in the end.

NIN is pop industrial - he brought electronic industrial music to the mainstream. yea, he whines a lot - but about the loss of god, the meaning or meaningless of life and the inability to love. Emo kids sings somewhat depressing, cheesy lyrics about the girl who doesn't like them and the music is usually upbeat and happy sounding. 2 completely different things. Nice easy generalization for the GFY audience though.

And definitly..I dont think NIN is emo...His lyrics might be...its still not emo...alot of bands out there have emotional lyrics and they play a completely different style of music!! Emo doesnt apply only to the lyrics....(and for most part, sucks)

Babagirls 11-18-2005 11:59 PM

NIN is one of the very few bands out there right now that actually is good and can be called music. Emo or not, i love NIN!

Sly 11-19-2005 12:21 AM

I think anybody that doesn't like a given song specifically because it doesn't fit into their particular genre of taste is a twat. Furthermore, anybody who suddenly stops liking a song or band because they have become popular because of their talent (the very talent that first brought said interest) is a twat as well.

How does this fit into the topic of this thread? I haven't the slightest clue. I do like NIN for the most part, but not when he's whining like a little whore that just got bitch slapped by her pimp for poor earnings.

Funny considering emo is not even a real genre. Its bullshit made up by people who wish they had some original style when in fact they do not.

Dressing gay is not enough to coin a music genre.

quiet 11-19-2005 12:41 AM

That all points back to the retards that strive to be "unique" by wearing some goofy clothing combination that all of their friends wear. Hey, if you want to wear some goofy clothes, go for it I'll probably get a kick out of it... but to claim its being "unique" and expressing "originality" is the biggest load of uncreative bull shit.

Yeh, ok, I want to be "unique" by dressing like every other useless tool. Go me!

NEWSFLASH! Articles of clothing and/or ways of wearing said article of clothing DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT make you unique! Instead, it makes you just another mass consumer that you claim to loathe.

Oh! The irony!

Baker Rd 11-19-2005 06:57 PM

I guess Johnny Cash is also emo since he covered an emo song from an emo band. Idiot.
