So ... If an IP never changes ...

Are you telling me it is impossible to track the user?

I want to track the user of a specific IP. It never changes. Anyway I can do this? Anyone that can?

Triple 6 08-05-2005 03:00 PM

On one of my blogs I use wordpress. When someone posts it leaves an ip. This particular individual is the same every time. Any way I can track this to a name, address?

EDIT : I just wish to speak to them face to face, nothing more.

As mentioned, the IP appears the same each time in my wordpress blog script. So it is possible to track name and home address? Could you tell me how?

If anything serious is going on, call his ISP

Hi Realpascal,

It would be great if you could help. I better not post the IP here though. If you post your icq I will hit you up in a minute? :)

Doc911,

If you wont hit me up, could you give me a hint at how it can be done?

Kristian 08-05-2005 04:18 PM

I've found some pretty good online resources, but so far I've drawn a blank on locating a person's name and address based on their IP.

Here are some good links for anyone :

http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation
http://www.formyip.com/
http://arul.telenet-systems.com/track.html

Anyone have knowledge to get home address and name?

tungsten 08-05-2005 04:28 PM

i cant track an ip further then the ISP, if ur getting death threats, thats pretty serious, call the isp

Michael O 08-05-2005 04:38 PM

You've been told this before you cannot get his home address the only people knowing it is his ISP you have to go thru them to get it and they won't release it with out a court order.

What you can do is contact his ISP tell them that the user with such and such ip is threatening you but that might not be enough the IP I have is shared by multiple users.

I will ... as a last resort. Unfortunately, my experience if authorities, or in this case the ISP, is very little can be achieved. I've had death threats offline too. The police admitted to me nothing can be done. I'd rather deal with this motherfucker my own way. A nice, friendly chat over a cup of Earl Grey.

nexcom28 08-05-2005 04:39 PM

I believe that when you track an IP address you are only tracking it to the ISP, therefore it is impossible to find out a home address. You would need to contact your ISP although it's unlikley they will provide details.

You're telling me what I already know. Same questions get asked here all the time. My hope is someone who does know the answer will respond to this thread. Don't be a little twat with me, I'm not in the mood.

I am telling you the answer.

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE

Michael O 08-05-2005 04:42 PM

Everyone here is saying the same thing it won't change no matter how many times you ask.

Probably!

But . . . what you don't seem to understand is that, for all I know, someone who has the answer may have missed me asking before. Do you see? Have someone tell you they'll kill you and your family. See how fucked off you get.

YOU are not everyone on the planet.

YOU do not have all the answers.

Fuck, is this so hard to understand?

But its a fact like the moon is not made of cheese.
No matter how many times you ask is the moon made of cheese the answer will always be the same no matter who you ask.

VicD 08-05-2005 04:48 PM

if you can not trace him, can he trace you?

You are such a dumbass, you've made me smile for the first time in hours.

Let me make this clear Michael:

You want to find the answer to X:

Ask 100 people. No one among them knows the answer.

Ask another 100 people. 1 person knows the answer!

Now, I think the answer is probably that we cannot locate a name or home address from an IP, but when me and my family are getting death threats (from someone who does know my address), then I am trying to find that 1 person.

Do you understand you . . . slow . . . fucking . . . little bitch?

WarChild 08-05-2005 04:52 PM

1) While you can trace which ISP owns a block of IPs, there's no way to find out which customer of the ISP has been assigned that particular IP.
2) ISP won't tell you either without a court order. It's called privacy.
3) It's PROBABLY a proxy.
4) You've been told this, several times, and KZ is right the answer is not going to change.

Kristian 08-05-2005 05:00 PM

Have something to do. I'll be back if anyone knows anything.

Yes, Michael and WarChild, I do know it is unlikely but a guy has to try.

ULVideo 08-05-2005 11:53 PM

I have to disagree with some above... the real answer is "it depends". Some IPs can actually be resolved to a physical address. It depends on how big the user is (usually). For example, big law firms, banks, etc. usually can be found (I like to use www.samspade.org as a first try), although single home users very rarely can.

Also, some ISPs can be very helpful and some won't do shit. They all have the ability to track the user, even if they have a dynamic IP, if you give them both the IPs and the times they were on that IP. It's a question if they want to or not. Just yesterday I got a threat from som guy who I threw off of a board to hack my site and keep it down for months. I contacted his ISP with a copy of the threat, and they wrote back to me that they wouldn't do anything without a subpeona and that I should contact Law Enforcement to make a complaint. I wonder what thy would say if their CEO's home address and phone number showed up on my mesage board and I was equally "cooperative" about taking it down?

hotorange 08-06-2005 12:28 AM

You can track any ip on this page: http://www.ripe.net
