BEST *first* movie to watch on big screen HDTV?

My 60" HDTV finally comes in this week after a month of waiting and I can't decide what movie to watch on it first. I need something that will make me say "wow". I really don't know what movies would look good with HDTV.

A few options:
Matrix
Scarface
Braveheart
Saving Private Ryan

I like action movies obviously. Any suggestions?

SykkBoy 07-11-2005 03:20 PM

my first one was HellBoy

WarChild 07-11-2005 03:20 PM

Opening battle from Gladiator.

Axeman 07-11-2005 03:21 PM

Gladiator or Saving Private Ryan would be great choices. Maybe even Troy?

After Shock Media 07-11-2005 03:21 PM

apocolypse now.

HushMoney 07-11-2005 03:22 PM

the original "Slap Shot" with Paul Newman. I watched it last night and forgot how funny that movie is. :thumbsup

Muff 07-11-2005 03:23 PM

Fight Club
Dawn of the dead
Gladiator
Troy - I think this would be awesome to watch on a 60 inch with surround blasting!

Ice 07-11-2005 03:23 PM

Top Gun with the surround cranked

Corleone 07-11-2005 03:24 PM

butterfly effect :)

CDSmith 07-11-2005 03:27 PM

Of those choices I'd say Saving Private Ryan.

Another you might consider is one of my old favorites, The Warriors.

That movie would rock on the bigger screen with the big sound.

Sosa 07-11-2005 03:27 PM

You got a sound system with it yet? I made the mistake not getting one with mine until a few years later. It makes the tv that much more better.

kirstenlara_19 07-11-2005 03:28 PM

:thumbsup Butterfly effect (i second the motion) :thumbsup

Yes, I do, its a cheap $700 system though but it should do fine. I'm upgrading to a better $4k system this fall, will be suhweet.

axelcat 07-11-2005 03:31 PM

I got one for you and this will be the best one- Heat
The showdown in front of the bank, game over

What are you looking into buying for sound? I just got mine about 6 months ago. Spent around 3k

Sly 07-11-2005 03:32 PM

I really didn't like Heat, its too slow.

Troy is a definite option, great movie.

GTS Mark 07-11-2005 03:33 PM

When I got my plasma and new home theatre the movie I watched first was the Bourne Identity.

Fucking awesome car chase in the mini!

pornstar2pac 07-11-2005 03:36 PM

"Strange Brew" is awesome on HDTV

Peaches 07-11-2005 03:37 PM

Set up surround sound for Saving Private Ryan. I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but even I was impressed by it :)

uno 07-11-2005 03:45 PM

Gladiator or Saving Private Ryan have my votes.

Tell me what you think. I think by the time I'm done buying new cables it will be more than the receiver, haha. I can get the receiver for $350.

lchaim 07-11-2005 03:46 PM

deep throat for sure

:thumbsup

but for real, I'd have to throw in my vote for Gladiator or Top Gun with sound cranked

touretts 07-11-2005 03:52 PM

Look on TNT and find the next showing of Gladiator.

I don't even really like Gladiator but it is awesome on HDTV.

I researched for 2-3 months, and IMO this is the best TV of its type on the market.

thewebgarage 07-11-2005 05:25 PM

5th element
Glory
Star Wars

Scarface is a great movie, but I'm wondering what this would look like in HDTV. Can they convert old movies to HDTV resolution? I thought maybe they had to be filmed a certain way. Not sure about that though.

Also not sure where you would find this in HDTV to watch, since it isn't exactly playing all the time on pay per view.

If you just want to watch a DVD you won't get the full effect. Still looks awesome though.

Le Grand bleu

Le Grand bleu AKA The Big Blue, and you'll also watch a meaningful movie.
Not the best acting ever, not the best plot ever, but a movie full of good values, and a great score. When French nail a movie, it's usually really good.
Highly inspiring. I will confess that I'm quite adept to top notch Home theaters, and good movies, but I cannot get into tech details. Just good stuff, pretty high end. Yum!

First thing I sat and watched on my HD was the entire set of Band of Brothers.
