Poll: more Canadians have negative view of U.S. They are "rude, greedy and violent."

:1orglaugh Damn.. I can't wait for the following replies..

"Fuck Canada"

"Who needs Canada"

"Let's invade Canada, Eh?"

Poll: more Canadians have negative view of U.S.

http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNew...ub=CTVNewsAt11

A new survey suggests Canadians increasingly view Americans as "rude, greedy and violent."

Only 59 per cent of Canadians have a favourable view of the United States, down from 72 per cent in 2002. France, Germany and Japan all ranked much higher.

The Pew Research Center conducted the survey, called the Pew Global Attitudes Project. The findings were published Thursday.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright co-chaired the survey. She told CTV's Joy Malbon she understands why many Canadians have a low opinion of America.

"There's no question there are negative feelings," Albright said. "Some of it has to do with the fact that we are the Bigfoot to the south."

Christopher Sands, of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, says Canadians feel underappreciated by America.

"The U.S. has really reflected Canada's decline in world affairs and treated Canada as a minor ally, much like the Netherlands or Denmark," he said.

The results show Canadians still find Americans to be inventive and hardworking, although more than half believe they are also dishonest.

In most categories, Americans view themselves better than Canadians view them, but the exceptions are when it comes to greed and immorality.

Seventy per cent of Americans view themselves as greedy, which is higher than any other country surveyed. And while 34 per cent of Canadians see Americans as immoral, 39 per cent of Americans also see themselves the same way.

Most Canadians are also unhappy with the current American government. The re-election of President George W. Bush has made 75 per cent of Canadians feel negatively about their neighbour to the south.

Former U.S. ambassador to Canada Paul Cellucci does not believe the negative feelings will last.

"There are always ups and downs in any relationship, but I think at the core we are a family," he said on CTV Newsnet's Countdown: with Mike Duffy on Thursday. "We inhabit this part of the world together. We work very well together. We're dependant on each other."

Canada is not the only country who has misgivings about America. The survey polled almost 17,000 people in 16 countries, and most indicated the United States is "broadly disliked."

Most Americans are aware they have an image problem. The survey showed that only 26 per cent of Americans believe their country is well-liked.

There is still some good news. Some American policies have managed to lift opinion in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. However, the affect of these policies on world opinion has been marginal.

The report shows that Bush's push for democracy in the Middle East and aid for tsunami victims were "well received in many countries." However, the report goes on to read that "only in Indonesia, India and Russia has there been significant improvement in the overall opinions of the United States."

Canadians still believe the world has a high opinion of them. The survey showed that 94 per cent of Canadians say the world has a positive opinion of Canada.

I guess we have to give half of everything we make to the govt to shed that greedy label?

I've always wondered why that 'nucks are bad tippers' stereotype keeps circulating... everyone I know tips 15% when we go out. Hell, sometimes the wife'll tip 15% even with the service sucks ass and the wait staff deserves maybe 2 cents as a 'protest tip'. :2 cents:

... and when I was having a convo with a cabbie in jamaica last time I was there, he told me that americans and germans were the worst tippers. :helpme

Yup, several service people in Mexico said the same thing to me on several occasions that I was down there.

It seems this little notion of Canadians being bad tippers is actually the result of some from another country having their facts bass ackwards. :1orglaugh

Zzzz.. Go take some Vicodins. Your brain is not functionning again.

About the tips, why would we tip americans anyway? :winkwink:

Seriously, I've been to Cuba and Brazil. I've always tipped everyone, everytime. Especially the bartenders :pimp

NoCarrier 06-25-2005 02:46 PM

I think you tip more if you've ever worked with customers. I worked in a movie theater for almost 8 years and it's funny to see people react about the "tip" part. :pimp

Yeah, bartending tips tend to get you better service, 'tis true. That's a little self-serving though ;)

When I go to vegas, I'm always generous to the drink girls, often put the dealer in the game (at the tables) and so on. Every other 'nuck I've been with in similar situ's does the same.

I couldn't care less if we have that rep 'cuz it's one that's easily busted and, better yet, if we're the 'generous canadian' it can be beneficial. I'm just curious as to where the myth sources from. Maybe USians travelling overseas while flying the leaf? Maybe poor college kids backpacking across wherever? :question

MickeyG 06-25-2005 02:52 PM

As for the supposed increased negative view of Americans, that's neither here nor there. Fact is there are smug arrogant superior elitist assholes on both sides of the border. I tend to deal with individuals rather than paint an entire country's population with one brush. Obviously a large % of those who took the poll don't think like the way I do though.

It's all about politics and especially the medias. People get their opinions from news and are more objective. But I think that since Bush is in power and with the fact that most canadians tend to be more liberals, that's one of the reasons why they have a negative view. Well, that's my point of view of course. I am pretty sure the polls were not as negative 10 years ago.

News Flash: There are assholes from every country. I have been to a great many places and have never had any problems with the locals.
To stereotype someone because they are from a certain country is crazy.
The only reason news agency do polls like these are to sell papers/advertising and to keep the stereotypes alive.
Remember kids don't see any difference until they are shown difference by others. :2 cents:

:1orglaugh Go get another drink. You need one. You have to be the most ignorant, idiotic, dumbass english canadian I have ever talked to on a message board.

Not only you are drunk 36 hours a day. But you are also a pathetic character. If only your comments were readable, it would be a great improvement. I have nothing against english canadians. Except dumbasses like you. You are part of the 0,01% of canadians who believe everything they hear in a bar when all their friends are drunk.

You just hate because you love to hate. Racist fucks like you deserve to be burned alive in front of everyone.

I've been there(Calgary) and I see just as many immigrants there as I do here(per capita). Wait till the oil runs out and your province returns to being the welfare needy province that it used to be (when a barrel of oil was $11 you guys were sucking my tax $$$ for your welfare state)

I'm not dissing farmers, I'm dissing ignorant retards such as yourself (with your narrow-minded statements)

BTW I like Chinese food :2 cents:

More people should think like you :thumbsup I can understand why there are so many negative opinions about the US government, but it sucks to be filed under one label when I don't necessarily agree with the way our own government does things. And it's no different than the way some people label everybody who follow a religion as "overzealous uptight do-gooders", and of course, those who label all porn peddlers as potential child molesters. I cannot stand stereotyping. Of course I've found myself guilty of it at times, and I really disgust myself when I realize I've done it.

Part deux? Part three you mean. Look. It took two referendums for Newfoundland to join Canada. So I don't think that a third one about Quebec's sovereignty is excessive. It's all about democracy. Yes or no. :pimp
