What do you know about the Atkins diet?
I just started on it. I really didn't have a choice; my wife started today and there's nothing else to eat in the house but diet food (i.e. steak, real butter, salads, hamburger, cheese etc. etc.)
It's actually not much of a change for me except I'm cutting out bread, sugar in my coffee and the occasional cookie or chocolate bar. I'm really going to miss the bread. So, who else is on this and what do you know/think about it? Does anyone know about the effects of this diet on diabetes, or possible side-effects? I'm reading conflicting reports about the healthiness/unhealthiness of this diet. |
I'm a little baffled that I'm now being told that fruit is bad but bacon is good for my heart and will help me lose weight? :O
WTF?! |
What type diabetes?

do you use insulin?

One of the draw backs about the Atkins Diet, is that you will end up with bad breath. If you do some research, you will find this to be true.

Eat some carbs once every 5-7 days or you'll feel like shit.
Have a weekly pizza day or something or make some pasta once a week. Just an FYI heart attacks were never known in the uS until refined foods were eaten. Before that bacon and eggs and meat was the diet and not too many got heart attacks or cancer ! |

I don't use insulin; I haven't actually been diagnosed with diabetes. Due to the fact that I'm not actually a Canadian citizen, seeing a doctor here is fairly expensive for me. What I know for sure is that I have a problem with blood sugar:
1. Large doses of sugar put me to sleep and sometimes make me feel ill (1 deep-fried glazed apple fritter will do it). 2. When I need to eat, I have to eat right away or I start feeling weak and nauseous; I also get extremely irritable. I've been on this diet for less than a day and I already have a lot more energy. I can't say that the same will hold true tomorrow; I haven't researched it. |

Dr. Atkins slipped on the ice and hit his head. He was in a coma and as a result had a large amount of fluid retention just before he died. |
See, I didn't even know Dr. Atkins was dead. I just got through reading a transcript of a live IRC chat session with him and thought he held them regularly. :-/

This is going to take some research. I don't want to kill myself by skipping toast. |
Well the research i have done on Atkins and what i've seen from others is, it really drains your energy and leaves you feeling tired most of the time. It also makes your blood pressure sky rocket. This of course can depend on the individual and there must be some reason why it is so popular, but i wouldn't look as Atkins as some miracle diet that doesn't have any drawbacks. So i suggest you test it out with a little waryness.

Still, I've got to see what the advocates have to say about all this... |
Didnt the inventor of that diet died of a hart attack and overweight?
http://www.snopes.com/medical/doctor/atkins.asp Yep...found it |
atkins doesnt work
its nothing more then a quick fix |
Atkins will be rough for the first 2-3 weeks, More than likely your wife or you will stick to it if you do a lot of physical activities, When your body is switching from burning carbs to fat you loose all energy you feel like shit, I made it to week three and i was like my god i cant stand this no more so i drank a big red and i was like super man on crack :1orglaugh

9 out of 10 doctors agree that Atkins works......
because nobody wants to eat that shit anyways. |

Stick to it for the first 2 weeks and see how you feel at the end of it :winkwink:
You may feel a bit crappy sometime between day 3 and 5 as your body adjusts to low carb intake then as your body goes into ketosis (fat burning mode) your energy should shoot up, also a big part of this is if you feel hungry then go eat something! My blood sugar came under control in the first 10 days and it's been fine ever since, my blood pressure and cholesterol levels came right down within 3 months. You should read the book thoroughly or start by going to the Atkins website. Good luck. |

The first two or three days were rough as you switch over to no carbs but after that I had much more energy. |

The fiber apparently is subtracted from the total, and lettuce is fairly low-carb anyway. WHoops, back up: Fiber is a carbohydrate BUT it inhibits carb absorption ? something like that so Total carbs minus carbs from fiber = net carbohydrates. So if lettuce has 2 grams of carbs but 1 gram of it is fiber, the net carbohydrate count for a serving of lettuce would be 1 gram. |
