Who, me? I wouldn't recommend it. I'm asking people with experience what THEY think, and I'm sharing my research on it as I go.

If your going to a fast food place for low carb stuff youre pretty much a fucking idiot because it usally isnt low carb as they say

i know a lot about atkins. i also know how people use it. people arent 50lbs overweight from eating chicken and vegetables all the time. maybe the people you know do it the correct way, but the ones ive known to go on the low carb diet use it as an excuse to eat total shit. when they lose weight it becomes programmed into their brains that this is the correct food to eat and they fuck themselves over in the end. id say about 75% of the people on low carb diets are only on it by word of mouth rather then reading the book and understanding it completely. "you mean i can have bacon and hamburgers for every meal and lose weight? sign me up!"

btw, if people werent buying the lowcarb shit from fastfood places they'd stop selling it.

edit: atkins isnt a life time solution which is why i original said it was a quick fix
how many people you know have been on it more then once?

Fiber is a carb but does not much if any impact on blood sugar so you don't count it.

I've been looking for this but most of what I've seen are claims that it actually LOWERS blood pressure, and I haven't seen anyone disputing that part.

However, there are indications that a diet high in protein can cause heart and/or kidney problems.

BlueWire 05-23-2005 01:50 AM

Keep eating bacon and eggs everyday for breakfast....I'm sure you'll live a long life :thumbsup

Any nutritionist that doesnt have an agenda will tell you that while Americans as a whole eat too many carbs and a lower carb lifestyle might be healthy ...cutting them out period (or close to it) is just unhealthy.

Last time i checked every method of weight loss was not healthy just because you lose fat/weight

People are such fucking doosh bags when it comes to weight loss...

EAT A LITTLE LESS...EXERCISE A LITTLE MORE....TENDS TO WORK

Jeezus...i should write a book

make sure you consume a lot of liquids. ketosis can really fuck up your kidneys if you arent hydrating yourself properly

Atkins CLAIMS to be a lifetime solution. Have you been to their (incredibly slow-loading) site? http://www.atkins.com

I don't know about giving up potatoes, bread and chocolate bars for life. I mean sure, there's more to life than sweets and starchy foods, but there's more to life than sex too and I don't want to give THAT up.

In fact, if I had to give up french fries, sex and chocolate bars I think my quality of life would be halved...

OMG WHAT IF THEY FIND OUT SEX CAUSES CANCER???? :1orglaugh

This is from the Atkins website.

Fallacy: You eat too much protein when doing Atkins, which is bad for the kidneys.

Fact: Too many people believe this untruth simply because it has been repeated so often that even intelligent health professionals assume it must have been reported somewhere.

But the fact is that it has never been reported anywhere. No one has as yet produced a study for review, or even cite a specific case in which a diet high in protein causes any form of kidney disorder. The only remotely related phenomenon is the fact that when someone is already suffering from far-advanced kidney disease, it is difficult for that person?s body to handle protein. But protein has nothing to do with the cause of the kidney problem.

Good advice. I need to get some bottled water though; we're on well water and we just plain won't drink it.

Thanks for that. :thumbsup
Now if I can find something to back that up (or at least nothing reliable to contradict it) I'll feel a bit better about the whole thing.

You don't have give up that stuff for life.

What you do is eleminate them now to lose weight. When you get to the level that you want you add more carbs until you get to where you don't gain or lose weight.

Atkins is a quick way to lose weight (just like any other crash diet)....they sell it as long-term to try and have you buying their shitty low carb snacks for a life-time...

This is a message board for people who specilize in SALES...if everyone to thick to see pas that?

bringer is correct that you need to drink lots of water. I also got some whole Psyllium husks at the health food store. It is just a natural fiber that will keep you from getting constipated which can happen on this diet.

I didn't get any fiber supplements, but we have a lot of high-fiber foods.

i dont see why people go on all these fancy diets. ive lost 45 pounds since jan 1st. just eat less and healthier(fresh fruits, salads, grilled chicken tenders, low fat snacks) , drinks lots of water, and exercise. i bought a stationary bike and use it for 20 mins before i eat breakfast and do another 30 mins in the evening while watching tv. losing weight isnt that hard.

USE IT!!!

atkins and the rest of these stupid diets are fucking ridiculous eating habits and cannot be maintained for life.

its not a natural way to eat.

your body needs equal amounts of carbs as well as protein and fat.

problem is most people consume way too many CALORIES and dont burn them off.

i gauran-fucking-tee if you just control your daily caloric intake you'll lose weight without any hunger and you can eat what you want just dont go over your daily caloric allowance

theres tons of info online about what a persons caloric intake should be basd on sex, height and proper weight.

say your 6 ft tall, a guy and your 185 lbs - your caloric intake to maintain this weight is around 2,200 calories a day give or take a hundred or two..

the sites below are a good guides for dailycaloric intake, the calories in food and weight/height ect

I love the atkins diet, but I cannot stress this enough:

DO NOT DO ATKINS WITHOUT ACTUALLY READING THE DIET!

Atkins is *not* simply pulling your carbs down to 20g per day. That is not the entirety of the diet.

Here's some questions people ask, and some simple answers:

Q: Will I be low on energy.
A: Somewhere between day 2-6 of the diet, you *may* feel wired. This is a sign of resistance to ketosis. Do not introduce additional carbs into your diet during this period. Once this period passes, you will most likely feel much more energetic than normal.

Q: Can I eat like a f'n pig?
A: No, however, the Atkins diet works because it surpresses your appetite. You will not want to eat like a pig. In fact, you may find yourself having to remind yourself to eat. Some people eat like a pig during the induction phase. It's not good for you, but it helps get you over the hump. If you have some self control, just eat reasonable amounts.

Q: Is atkins weight loss just water weight?
A: During the first two weeks, a large amount of the weight loss is water weight. While you may be stunned with the weight loss in the first two weeks, you will not likely sustain this *dramatic* weight loss. If you do sustain dramatic weight loss, see a doctor, or discontinue the diet.

Q: Is it okay to have some carby food once a week?
A: No. If you have to ask this, you do not understand the fundamental principals of the diet. READ THE BOOK.

Finally, do not do the induction diet without vitamin suppliments.

BTW.. my favorite induction diet meal is chicken souvlaki with steamed greens and greek salad. You should be able to get it at just about any greek reastaurant as a standard menu item, and it's not hard to make at home. Just avoid eating tomato slices (or ask them to not include them), and limit yourself to reasonable portions of greens.
