Just wondering what all you married guys ended up paying your engagement rings for your woman? Been shopping around lately but just curious what others have done.

The average ring in the Tri-State area (NY-NJ-CT) is $6-9,000. I believe the Midwest is $1500-3500.

This is very simple. You pay for the ring through esrow.com
It gets shipped to you and you take it to a jeweler for appraisal. If the appraisal is in the ballpark of what the jeweler on ebay said it would be, you have escrow.com release the funds and you have a deal.

If it turns out to be fake or worth much less than what you thought, you return it to the seller and escrow.com returns your money to you.

Or you can get ass raped by the local zales store and pay 3 times as much, but at least you'll get to see it first.
(And if you see it how are YOU going to know it's real and that the color/cut/clarity are what the store is telling you it is?)

There's nothing wrong with an SI1 or SI2 ring, especially if he doesn't have a big wad of cash to blow on the ring. (And also if the flaws are on the bottom of the stone where they won't be noticed anyways)

Ah, all knowing one! How do you know what I do and do not know about? Lets look at this for example. You buy a ring from me on eBay. I ship it to you. You do not like it and tell escrow.com you are returning it. I recieve the ring back and notify escrow.com that this is not the ring I had shipped to you and you are trying to rip me off. Now we have an escrow.com dispute which can take forever to resolve. This is also one of the reasons that a lot of sellers will not deal with escrow.com.

Ok well first of all, in your original post you said never buy jewelry without seeing it first........now you're talking about problems with escrow.com.....what does that have to do with seeing the jewelry first??

If the seller won't use escrow.com then you find another seller, there are plenty of them on ebay. Also if you pay using paypal you have plenty of options there as well.
Alot of the jewelry guys selling on ebay are power sellers, they do it for a living......read the remarks from the hundreds of people that have bought from them before you decide who to buy from. It's just like doing research for any other type of purchase.....but you'll end up paying about 1/3 of the jewelry store price for the exact same diamond by buying it off of ebay.

lol, thanks for your advice. I was an apprentice for a diamond dealer for 3 years.Your "bottom of stone" theory is completely false. Research how a diamond is cut to bring out the most "fire" or sparkle. Anything near the "bottom of the stone" would totally fuck that theory up.

Diamong engagement rings on eBay 15,748. Search eBay for Diamond engagement rings escrow.com and there are 69 listings and I'm sure a few of those say they are not taking escrow.com.

IF PayPal were to grant you protection under their buyer protection plan your claim is limited to $1000.00.

It is just my opinion but buying something as important as a diamond engagement ring is nt something I would do through eBay, PayPal or escrow.com. Your best bet is to find a jeweler you can trust and work out a deal with him/her.

Sosa, also try to stay with a dealer that can provide a GIA certificate with the diamond you buy. This ensures the stones quality. They grade accurately.

If they have any other kind of certificates, EGL or anything else, assume that the grading is "rounded up". For example, an actual H color stone being graded as a G.

Buying an engagement ring off of ebay is silly (unless they are a reputable jeweler and provide GIA certs).

I strongly believe in private jewelers to ensure quality and personal attention to your large purchase.

I got lucky. Many many years ago when I was a child, one of my father's employees invested a ton of money into a ring for some chick. The broke up before he was able to give her the ring, and he ended up selling it to my father for a great price. My father gave it to my mother, although she never wore it being as it was a wedding ring. It has a huge diamond, surrounded by more diamonds, and is made of white gold. We had it appriased a few years ago and was told it's worth $15k.

I paid $400 for it and my wife loves it.

Thats awesome! Hell of a steal you had. I'd guess that it is an "Old Miner" cut stone.. You could probably shave off a few points and have it re-cut as an Ideal or Russian cut to bring out more sparkle.

My ring cost approx. $10,000 but is worth much more now. Some EXCELLENT stores for high quality diamonds: White Flash, Excel Diamonds (SuperbCert), Good Old Gold. Do NOT buy from a mall jeweler or at Ebay (unless the diamond has a GIA or AGS cert AND a good return policy).

WRONG. Its easy to spot the fakes. A LOT of good ebay shops are run by New york and other good jewelery shops.

I got married in January. I paid US$10,000 for a Tiffancy classic diamond ring and we got it here and had it valued at US$18,000 at a top jewelery store here (with certificate). And her wedding ring cost me US$3000 and was valued at US$6000 here. And my ring cost me US$3000 and was valued at US$5000.

Bought off Ebay from Newyork store (with very classy website). Called them and confirmed. Legit company and got the rings shipped to Australia.

Saved myself $10,000's.

Oh lord, you are quite misguided and you are doing a disservice to anyone looking to buy a diamond....it depends ENTIRELY on the stone. There could be a SI2 eye-clean stone that is beautifully cut and looks amazing and there could also be a flawless stone that has a horrible cut and looks like a piece of frozen spit. Which stone should you get in that case?? The SI! Also, many I color stones face up beautifully...again, CUT IS KING. You must have worked at a mall jeweler (or something similar), because you are extremely misguided.
