Takeover near as Glazer buys Irish stake
Manchester United have been plunged into turmoil as Malcolm Glazer's £790million takeover dream moved within touching distance of becoming reality.

There's a lot of pissed off man u fans tonight :helpme

Thumbler 05-12-2005 06:56 PM

They'll get over it :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

As a Bucs fan I say SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY. Glazer took the most losingest franchise in the history of the NFL ever and made it a champion. Funny how this is sooooo fucking bad yet when the announcement was made Man U stock went UP by 13%.

soccer in england is unlike american sports... the teams are based around the fans and business is a secondary matter... if man utd was to be bought the fans will no longer have any say on the matter not to mention glazer can do what he pleases... lets not forget does he actually follow soccer?

You're right. It's not one bit like american sports. My bet is that they will lose a LOT of fans. I'm looking forward to the next game at home. Man there will be some insane TIFOs going up.

Ofcause the stocks go up when someone moves in to take over a company.
The fear is that Glazer will raise prices and milk the club for every penny its worth without caring about the results of the team

thaifan99 05-12-2005 08:08 PM

Its players that win games..................not owners...........and they have the players!

wedouglas 05-12-2005 08:08 PM

Robin WMHQ 05-12-2005 08:45 PM

That's why the Bucs went from 16 losing seasons in 19 years to 5 playoff appearances and a SB title in 10 years. And from dead last in merchandise seales to perninal top 10. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

As far as raising prices. Well let's see you couldn't GIVE Bucs ticket away before Glazer now the waiting list is 110K long. They says expect to wait at least 8-12 years maybe more if you got on the list today.

Before you FEAR what he MIGHT do why not see what he has actually done. Also if these Irish guys bought Glazer's share would you guys be having fits now? Ummmmm no. So what does that say. Oh it because he's an AMERICAN.

I'm pefectly happy with him as the Bucs owner and if you don't want him then that's your problem. Thing is he already owned nearly 1/3 of the team as is so he already was having an inlfuence on your team don't you think?

Also as far as him not following socccer. How do you know this? let me clue you in to a couple of things. A good deal of owners of American sports teams don't even follw that sport and I would bet $10K that Glazer probally knows more about soccer than he does American football. That's why smart owners hire GMs to run things.

Sarah_Jayne 05-12-2005 09:29 PM

no it is because he doesn't follow the sport ..believe it or not that matters in this country. Atleast the guy that bought Chelsea is a fan of the sport if not the specific team.

As far as how we know..well the British airwaves have been filled today with people that know him well saying he doesn't.

Now, ManU brought it on themselves by dancing with the devil

Mikey 05-12-2005 09:32 PM

Now MU will have the $$$ to compete with Chelsea.

Like I said smart owners let a GM run the team. Also Man U is a PUBLICLY traded stock meaning you or I could buy shares. They are less than $6 a share. Or were before today. If all these supposed die-hard Man U fans each bought 10 shares Glazer wouldn't have anything to buy. And he's not the devil. Jeez get over yourselves already. He's American you hate America and that's the whole thing.

I know Man U has been very successful in the past but when was the last time they won something like this?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/3..._glazer300.jpg

Sarah_Jayne 05-12-2005 09:37 PM

um, not that long ago and kept it for years

Sarah_Jayne 05-12-2005 09:41 PM

i could be wrong BUT I think Man U were #1 in the league (ie won) in '93, 94, 96,97,99, 2000, 01 and 02. When they didn't they were #2 or #3.

That is why everyone hates them..lol

Yes and soccer doesn't have a salary cap does it? If they are still good what all this talk about demotion?

Point is where is all the hate for the Irish dudes that are selling their shares to Glazer? It take 2 to tango now doesn't it?

Sarah_Jayne 05-12-2005 09:47 PM

Soccer players make nothing in relation to US baseball or football players

hey..I am not standing up for Man U..I am a charlton fan...just saying that unless you understand how it works here you aren't going to win people over about this. The regulation thing makes it a whole different game.

Once again I think Man U fans are getting all uptight about nothing. Jeez give the man achance. IF he had a bad history with the NFL then you might have a point. As far as soccer players and their salaries well Beckham( sp? ) make more than 99% of NFL players. Also the NFL's $85 mil salary cap has to be spread over 53 players which is not an easy as you think. Also NFL players actually make less on average than baseball, NBA or even NHL players.

I would have ZERO problems if one of my favorite teams were sold to an Englishman. And so would most Americans. I guess we are more tolerant.

Sarah_Jayne 05-12-2005 09:56 PM

beckham made most of his salary through comercials and stuff...but it isn't nationality..a russian owns Chelsea..it is about knowing the sport....for those that care.

juve20 05-12-2005 10:00 PM

I'm not a united fan but I hate these rich folk coming along and buying clubs like we do food!

tony

GatorB 05-12-2005 10:07 PM

Personally I wished he wouldn't by Man U just to shut the fucking limeys up. As far as worrying about debt the fact is if he had to he could always sel the Bucs if he wants Man U that bad and accoring to Forbes they are worth $779 million. By the way which is 9th out of the 32 teams in the NFL and when he bought the team in 1995 he paid $192 million.

from Forbes

Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Malcolm Glazer is making more news lately with his interest in soccer's Manchester United than he is with his football team......

ManU is considered the most popular soccer team in the world. With a season ticket waiting list of 110,000, Glazer isn't doing so bad with the Bucs either.

dunefield 05-12-2005 10:54 PM

Considering he will be BORROWING 300 million dollars to buy out Man Utd that would mean ticket prices will go up and even selling of players... Now he wants INSTANT SUCCESS!!! Now he is he going to do that when he's already borrowed 300 million to buy out a club so thats probably another 75 million to achieve that instant success... How is he going to get the money? From exploiting prices on tickets and fans...

plus you can't compare American sports to soccer... these clubs have been founded 100+ years ago and are heavily into tradition... American sports are pretty much just franchises and move towns if the popularity isn't high enough in a state... to give control to a person who has no love for the game and just wants to wreak $$$ for personal benefit is a sad sight for soccer...

NickB. 05-13-2005 12:06 AM

it will end up with the man owning 75% or more, so the club has to get off the stockmarket, fans are making a big deal about this........I wonder what's on the minds of the players now......

Gunni 05-13-2005 12:07 AM

The Man U fans are worried about him buying 90.1% of the shares, and then he has the right to automatically buy the rest, if he does that he can transfer the debt to the club, and if things go bad he can just walk away (if Man U is doing bad and the Bucs good, why would he sell the Bucs?). They will not be able to Match Chelsea, Ferguson is losing his touch, the fans didn't even stick around after the final home game so the players could give them the lap of honour and clap for their support during the season.

And quite frankly buying a football club for that much money doesn't really make that much sense (specially a decaing one), he could have bought Totenham, and had a few hundred millions left to spend on players. To become more vaaluable than he payed for them they will have to do the same as they did in the 90's, and with Chelsea and Arsenal there, this is not going to happen.

The fans are not against him because he is American as you think, but because their afraid for their club, it's as simple as that. It's not like this guy just walked in with 10 billion dollars like Abramovich, he doesn't actually have the money to buy the club, all it seems like he has is the capability to get them in a huge debt

Amen....

hvidlogspusher 05-13-2005 12:16 AM

i dont think so, i think the guy buying it will make the club even better

Gunni 05-13-2005 12:19 AM

maybe he will, I guess we'll just have to find out :)

Brits are some of the most racist people I've ever met against Jews and I'd have to think that the fact a Jewish-American now owns them. 2 of the things they like least. Jews and Americans.

Arsenal has some songs they sing against rivals Tottenham and I dont know the exact words but a good portion of it is directed against the 'Jews' in Tottenham....

Abramovich is ten times richer than Glazer.
Roman didn't have to borrow a penny to buy Chelski.

Lee 05-13-2005 01:53 AM

The fear is that at 75% plus 1 share he will delist the company and transfer all the debt he incurred in buying the club onto them. However as Gator has said, he turned a team of what realistically could be termed "no hopers" into champions, so you have to give the guy a chance.

And at the end of the day he is a businessman, and a businessman will not invest in something to lose money.

thaifan99 05-13-2005 01:59 AM

The whole premier league is in debt.......very few teams if any make a real profit.

if not for billionaires the bubble will burst soon.

I am ultra sensitive to anti-american press in relation to Americans coming to the Uk, etc for obvious reasons and I have to say I haven't felt that vibe AT ALL over this story. I have also not heard his religion mentioned once. I am sure there are morons somewhere that care but then they also vote BNP.

its different..... UTD are the biggest football club in the world, their isnt much room to grow as a brand for them, and the fact that hes partially buying it with a loan doesnt bode well
