Holy shit, this router stuff is fucked up, nothing works, someone help me please.

As you may have read in my other post i have a new wireless router installed.

Outlook express wont connect to my mail server, AIM wont connect, i cant ping sites (give error) and remote desktop also doesnt work!

I added the necessary ports in the router and that didnt help. I even opened up the whole router for this puter and that didnt help. Im still pretty confident its the router because i dont see what else could block all these connections.

Anybody any clue whats going on?

Sheri Santiago 10-08-2004 04:11 PM

what kind of router are you using? linksys?

ALOTI 10-08-2004 04:14 PM

I got the same thing going on with a LinkSys BEFSR41 here.:feels-hot

Damn thing will truck along and decide to quit.

I don't know about wireless, but I have to "port forward" all the ports I want open.

good luck..maybe try the router brands support area or phone.

bringer 10-08-2004 04:18 PM

does it work when you use a hardline?

LINKSYS WRT54G here, just plugged it in, changed the admin passwrds, added wireless security and that;s it. Did not have to configure anything...

did you remember to tell the router to clone the MAC Id for you nic card?

It's in the router web interface, and it's not hard to overlook it.

Dirty F 10-08-2004 04:21 PM

Mac address is fine.
All those settings are fine. I mean i can browse the web obviously. Its just like anything other than webbrowsing it wont allow.

Vitasoy 10-08-2004 04:22 PM

Did your ip change? Maybe do a ipconfig / all or something similar if you got a different os.. and compare your router settings.

It proberly blocked all ports except 80...Any DMOZ settings?

demheels 10-08-2004 04:23 PM

Linksys solution:

This problem is usually caused by an authorization problem. To resolve the issue, please follow these instructions:
1. Open your browser and type http://192.168.1.1/Filters.htm into the "Address Bar".
2. You will be prompted for a username and password. By default there is no username, and the password is admin. Once you type in the password click OK
3. Once you've gotten past the log in you should be at the filters tab.
4. Click on the Forwarding tab
5. Once the "Forwarding" section opens, click the Port Triggering button.
6. Once you've done this, a new window will appear. Here is an example of how to fill out the ports:

Application Name
E-mail
Trigger Port Range
25 ~ 25
Incoming Port Range
113 ~ 113

7. Once you've done this hit Apply, then Continue.
8. After the settings have been applied, you should be able to use e-mail normally.

I cant ping anything at all.

"transmit failed, error code 65"

No firewall as far as i know.

Let me check that dhcp thing.

run cmd and type

ipconfig /all

and

arp -a

and paste them

Dirty F 10-08-2004 04:36 PM

DHCP is turned on.

Also i just noticed this option turned checked:

Association control Wireless clients with A checked can associate to the wireless LAN; and allowdeny unspecified MAC addresses to associate.

Is that important or wrong?

uncheck that
that's a filter that you probably didnt configure

its basicly a list you configure with mac addresses of wireless clients you want to allow onto your router. if the mac isnt put in the list, the connection wont be made

right click and pick select all, then highlight what you want and right click again and it puts it in the clipboard

So i turned off mac address control completely? Is that good?
I didnt fix the connection problem tho.

RainMailer 10-08-2004 04:46 PM

This is what I do for a living. linksys constantly has firmware issues. Update the firmware, make sure you get the proper firmware or you will have a paper weight on your hands.

your best bet is to
get a cat 5 cable and see if it works from your computer when its directly connected
update the firmware on the router
hold the reset button the router and restore the factory settings
take it back and get a linksys
i havent heard much about sitecom so i dont know about their quality

I tried it, doesnt work.

I may not be a expert on domains but I am a expert on routers:) plug directly into the router with cat5 ehternet cable if that works then check the wireless card out if it does not you are going to need to download the firmware and upgrade the firmware.
