Beheaded American: how long was he alive after they cut his head off?

Just saw the video....he's obviously alive when the guy was holding his head up, you can see him mouthing something and moving his eyes ! !

How long does it take to die when one gets beheaded? Till the brain runs out of oxygen, (10 minutes, 5 minutes, 3 minutes?)

????

Rob 09-22-2004 09:12 PM

Isn't it like 5 seconds?

GiantGnome 09-22-2004 09:12 PM

WHO FUCKIN CARES

Freakster 09-22-2004 09:18 PM

that would be freaking awful..

baddog 09-22-2004 09:25 PM

During the times that the French used the guillotine, they said that people would grab the head as soon as it fell in the basket and show the victim their body . . . . I don't know if you remember the movie Wolfen. . . there was a scene where a werewolf decapitated this guy and as his head rolled down the street he watched himself shooting a shotgun. Supposedly, that is how is would happen.

I thought the guy was making noise for quite a while too. . . . maybe the sound was not synched with the video

The current medical consensus is that life does survive, for a period of roughly thirteen seconds, varying slightly depending on the victim's build, health and the immediate circumstances of the decapitation. The simple act of removing a head from a body is not what kills the brain, rather, it is the lack of oxygen and other important chemicals provided in the bloodstream. To quote Dr. Ron Wright "The 13 seconds is the amount of high energy phosphates that the cytochromes in the brain have to keep going without new oxygen and glucose" The precise post-execution lifespan will depend on how much oxygen, and other chemicals, were in the brain at the point of decapitation; however, eyes could certainly move and blink.

cold_ice 09-22-2004 09:33 PM

Wow thats awful.

Babaganoosh 09-22-2004 09:35 PM

That was a pretty brutal video but it's something everyone should watch ESPECIALLY if they still think going to Iraq was a good idea and are even THINKING of voting for Bush. This is the real world and people need to see it for what it is, not for what the sterilized media lets us see.

BiG_RoD 09-22-2004 09:39 PM

Different parts of the body die at different times. Very morbid.

Nor do I. The things you see will stay with you your whole life. I don't need that kinda shit popping up in my brain during nightmares.

Plan9 09-22-2004 09:51 PM

I refuse to watch these videos.
Ill take your word for it.

frankthetank 09-22-2004 10:00 PM

Is it the first american beheading or the second that your talking about?

Rich 09-22-2004 10:02 PM

Are you serious? I don't watch those videos, and now I know why. :helpme

I think they can live about 10-15 seconds before the brain dies.

KRL 09-22-2004 10:02 PM

As long as your brain has oxygen and blood circulating, theoretically you should be able to keep your consciousness for a bit.

And then your soul after that sees it all too but there is no more physical pain sensation, just your mind now having to unexpectingly come to terms with the fact you are still able to think without having a body anymore.

Is consciousness a function of our brain, or is it independent of our brain? That't the question. There is some evidence to suggest that it is.

This was synched. The sounds matched the movements (unfortunately).

the first video was HORRIBLE, i'm sure he went through the same process.

but hte second video is the one i'm referring to...they cut off his head pretty fast (compared to the other guy) and when the guy holds it up , the camera zooms in and you can see him trying to speak and moving his eyes around

I've had an interest in what happens after death for a long time and have researched it quite a bit.

The conclusion I've come to is no, consciousness is not a function of our brain. It is a function of our soul. However, while connected to a physical body, the consciousness becomes tied into the physical sensations therein.

Its much easier to explain the vast depth and abilities of our minds if you look at it with this broader perspective.

Memory is one of the clues that leads me to believe its not actually stored within the physical body, but offsite in the realms and dimensions where souls operate. Just look at a human brain. I can't accept from a visual analysis standpoint that all of our knowledge, reasoning, memory, creativity, etc. can all be coming just from that blob. No way.
