1 BSO Deputy Killed, 1 Wounded in Lauderdale Kiddie Porn Raid

FORT LAUDERDALE ? One Broward Sheriff's Office deputy was killed and another wounded while working with a kiddie porn task force trying to serve a search warrant Thursday morning. A suspect is in custody, police and Fire Rescue officials said.

The shot officers were rushed to nearby North Broward Medical Center under a police escort. A section of Northeast 62nd Street and rush-hour Interstate 95 were shut down to traffic for the ambulances.

Stephen McInerny, division Fire Rescue chief for Fort Lauderdale, said a 31-year-old male deputy was pronounced dead shortly after he was brought into the North Broward hospital.

BSO spokesman Jim Leljedal said he was told the wounded deputy's wounds are hoped to be non-life threatening.

The shootings occurred at a home at 1950 NE 57 St. shortly after 8 a.m. during a raid by a special multi-force police task force. Ten to 15 officers were reported in the task force serving a search warrant as part of a kiddie porn investigation. The target reportedly was a suspected pedophile.

One neighbor said they heard six to eight shots fired. Another said she only heard five shots, got curious as to what was happening and walked around the corner to see police putting a hand-cuffed and leg-shackled man into a patrol car.

"He had an ugly smirk" on his face, said Arlene Marcus, "like he was proud of what he just did."

Leljedal said the Law Enforcement Against Child Harm task force was involved in a kiddie porn investigation and went to the home around 8:20 a.m. to serve the search warrant. He said it was not yet clear what happened, but he said someone in the house opened up on the law officers with a high-powered weapon.

At this point, Leljedal said he doesn't think deputies returned fire. He said other task force officers quickly caught the suspected gunman and arrested him.

i would have to say i have not heard of one false cp raid/arrest that hasn't been warranted within the last couple of years (then again i don't read every piece of news out there). from celebs to common people; they should execute the person on the spot for knowingly producing/selling or viewing cp. this is where i feel the laws are backwards but in some cases innocent until proven guilty is a benefit.....

BSO and Corrections know their inmates well. They know which inmates hate pedophiles, which inmates are the ones who are most likely to rape another inmate and where are the danger spots in the jail to get raped. I believe they will be using that knowledge in dealing with this cop killing pedophile.

one thing to think about though.. I know if I was asleep and someone came busting in my place I'd probably shoot back too.. If I am asleep and or caught off guard with people rushing into my house, armed and not wearing VERY easily identifiable police uniforms (all black does not cut it) at the very least, with out so much as knocking or announcing they are police. I could see how I could think the worse and shoot.

i have to agree, with the police being out of line. Guns are legal in the states, so be more careful, dont just barge into a house. i know some people who go into drug dealers homes screaming police...they even have all the uniforms..after everyone is handcuffed they usually laugh about it..count all their money and dope and then leave with it all

On Friday, Harvey Police Chief Philip Hardiman confirmed that Ford's home was mistakenly raided during an investigation by his department. "We make out search warrants when we get information from drug informants," he said. "Sometimes they give us incorrect information, and warrants are made out for one house when we're really looking for the house next door.

"I think that's what happened here," he said. "That happens from time to time in any police department."

Hardiman defended his officers, who were working with a special drug unit of the State Police.

When asked if the department would apologize to Ford, Hardiman replied. "I don't know if we'd apologize. It's not unusual for that to happen sometimes, but I will say it doesn't happen that often."

Hardiman said he does not know when officers realized they were at the wrong address, but said the department would pay for damage to Ford's home.

"I know they realized that there were no drugs there," he said.

Ford said the experience was terrifying, and that officers refused to show her the warrant.

"It was hard seeing my son sitting in his room on the bed in handcuffs," she said. "He's 13, and they wouldn't let me talk to him. ... "

"I asked both of my kids if they wanted to stay home from school [Friday] because of the raid," she said. "They both went to school. They're afraid to be here."

I live on the Ohio / Kentucky border... (in a very hillbilly area) Everyone here has guns, everyone will shoot an intruder without thinking twice and just about everyone would walk out with a smug on their face if they dropped a cop in the process. Thursday morning officers knocked on the door. They tried to get Wilk to come outside to receive the warrant, but he refused, Jenne said. Shots were fired in the house by the suspect, who was armed with a high-powered weapon, Jenne said.

``Mr. Wilk had several weapons, several high-caliber weapons around the house,'' Jenne said.

One shot pierced Deputy Fatta's bullet-proof vest, ultimately killing him.

Other officers returned fire at Wilk. He was not injured, Jenne said. But the suspect gunman was quickly caught and taken into custody. No one else was in the house.

Police have been to the Wilk's home at least two times in the past two years. Last year, a child porn warrant was issued at the home in the residential neighborhood, at which point Wilk threatened officers and was arrested. Last month, another warrant was served and Wilk's roommate, registered sex offender Kelly Ray Jones, was arrested on charges of using the Internet to send illicit images of children to an undercover detective. He remains in federal custody.
