I'm guessing the main argument for the ban on prostitution ( in most states ) is that it increases the risk of spreading disease. I guess when it comes down to turning a profit with one's body, there are also moral aspects and I'm guessing the laws banning prostitution probably come from the religious right-wing.

The reason it's illegal is simply, percieved morality.

The Grundys of the world say you must not do it and politicians who are more worried about getting re-elected than doing what is right follow them.

Look at prohibition, porn and drugs. do the laws work. Do they change them? So why not is the question, maybe because the "Moralists" are prepared to fight for what they want harder than the liberals.

Prostitution is legal here. They have to be licenced, pass police checks and get monthly medical testing. No matter what you do you will never get rid of it, so doing it in a controlled setting sure beats having them hang out on street corners. They make a "business" out of it and take it off the streets.

Check your history, prositution became illegal in most places in the United States (or enforcement of existing anti-prostitution laws began in earnest) at roughtly the same time as women got the vote.
