Tips to lower blood pressure

Ok peeps, this seems rather important and I am seeking assitance.

Since Saturday, I have had high blood pressure. Today it got up to 152/104 ~ which, as you might know is pretty damn fucking high.

I have no clue why it happened, I am not overly stressed, I don't eat too much salt, or eat anything else in massive quantities.

Any suggestions, besides going to see a Doc tomorrow? :helpme :(

Luc Duboi 06-10-2003 03:29 PM

eat cai and kim hci

voodooman 06-10-2003 03:31 PM

Im with ya. But unlike you, I eat way to much salt, and have way to much stress.

Doc told me not to salt anything anymore. I cant eat without salt.

Capsacien(sp) lowers your blood pressure, which is found in really hot sauce, like Daves insanity sauce.

I love it, but for some, the torture probably isnt worth it.

I feel your pain man. Going to a doc to get meds for mine since my diet / excersising isn't helping. However, here's some tips.

- Drink lots of water
- Limit salt intake (as you mentioned). Good dieting and whatnot. Grains, nuts and shit, fish, chicken, rice, yadda yadda yadda.
- Limit alcohol intake
- Excersise
- Nicotine is an obvious BP increaser

Good luck man.

Penrod 06-10-2003 03:32 PM

I'll let you know after tomorrow. Tested mine yesterday and it was 171 over 111

I immediately called my doc and have an appt in the morning.

Maxpixelz 06-10-2003 03:34 PM

Hi
It could be caused by a number of things.
do you do any kind of exercise?

Since you do not eat in excessive quantities it does not mean that you are eating the right things. You have to make sure that your fats are not saturated.

One more thing you may want to check up on is to see if it is hereditary?

Oh yeah and one more tip.
STAY AWAY FROM LIKEWHOA!

xxxdesign-net 06-10-2003 03:38 PM

alot of sport, running, no cafeine and below 1000mg of salt daily!

btw, you might not know which food have alot of salt...

bread, frozen meals, soup in cans, etc... have alot of salt....

as for 152/104, alot of older folks have that pressure, especially the 104 which is high.... and they live well without problems... you wont have an hearth attack soon:2 cents:

I do exercise, once, maybe twice a day, mostly lifting, running and swimming.

I would say that I eat alright, well.... as alright as a college student can eat ;)

Hereditary? You mean as in that it might be from my parents? Sure, they both have problems with high blood pressure. But a. my parents are 60/54 years old, and b. I am 23. Gimme a break. I am in better shape than 95% of the average population...

LikeWhoa? Thanks for the tip. :winkwink:

I have this electronic blood pressure thing for my wrist. Not that accurate, but it does the job. No clue where to get it in the US. Probably in a pharmacy.
Last night I actually had a slutty nurse measure it for real, same result.

I do sports, I don't drink coffee, and don't consume massive quantities of salt either.

I think it might be stress induced, lately I have had a lot of shit going on...

I am not afraid of heart attacks, it's the headaches that I get when working out for about 15 minutes. That and blurry vision.

digifan 06-10-2003 03:57 PM

It is not that high so you should take Herbalife products see www.herbalife.com , all herbal and natural, drink a lot but not cocke or soda only mineral water and use less salt.

Capsaicine found in hot spicy food and even in raw paprika is also great and healthy like green tea but won't recommend it to those with colitis or hernia, garlic is much better.

All of these and lots of ancient Chinese herbs and those of the Amazon can be found in Herbalife products, I love them and make a cleaning cure every spring, much better than fasting IMHO. You should not take their herbal concentrate tea which may raise blood pressure, that's all.

Sometimes stress can produce symptoms like this which hit you later.

X37375787 06-10-2003 04:02 PM

as for GFY, I think I really might wanna step away from it for a while. too stressing to see all this drama going on here.

then again, if I got a heart attack, I could sue Lensman for millions. :Graucho

Age doesn't mean much where hypertension is concerned. It can even happen in teenage years. A cool bath can help a bit, as well as drinking lots of cool water and relaxing. Eating less salt, caffiene etc can help. If your hypertension is hereditary though (and it well can be,) you may need medication. Definitely see a doctor though.

1) Drink a cup or two of green tea daily
2) Eat as much garlic as you can stand on a regular basis...
3) Destress daily...learn some groovey deep breathing/relaxation stuff....yoga/meditation/the zen masturbation routine, whatever

do that with the regular suggestions of 'watch what you eat and workout'....

A temporary fix if it's bothering you is to lie down on your left side for a while. Makes it easier for your heart to pump.

It's likely a doctor won't do anything with a first visit but give you some tips. Usually a determination that you have high blood pressure comes after monitoring your blood pressure over several office visits.

The standard sensible things the doc will tell you right off is..

healthy diet
low salt and sodium
heathly weight
exercise
little or no alcohol
stop smoking
drink 64oz of water daily

Fletch XXX 06-10-2003 04:21 PM

cut out caffiene too.

the average american consumes like 300g of caffeine a day, the body should only take in 50g

'According to research at Duke University funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute that studied nineteen coffee drinkers through their daily routines, moderate intake of caffeine can increase stress levels, heart rate, and blood pressure enough to elevate the risk of heart disease.'

this is one of the most common causes of anxiety and stuff like increased blood pressure etc.

Cut out everything except meat, beer, pot, and salad, youll be fine.

:thumbsup

looky_lou 06-10-2003 04:24 PM

One way ticket to Tahiti might help.

But seriously. Cut out the salt.:winkwink:

Thanks for the tips PK and all the others. See, the problem is that I pretty much cover all these points already.

Healthy diet. Sure
Low salt & sodium. Yeap, not more or less than before
Healthy weight. Sure
Exercise. Absolutely
Little or no alc. Need to work on that...
Stop smoking. Never really did it
64oz water. Easily. If not twice the amount.

Go figure. I'll just go to sleep really early tonight and rest well.

Humm I'm no doctor but I have a friend that had blurry vision, he went to the doctor and was diagnosed diabetic. A lot of diabetics have troubles with high blood pressure too, so it might be worst than you think..

Fletch XXX 06-10-2003 04:30 PM

i missed the part about headaches & blurry vision, yeah EQ, that doesnt sound good man especially if you are as healthy as you seem to be.

Sounds like something more than blood pressure, something must be causing it.

diabetes? nah.

I think it might have to do with last Saturday's weight session where I put really hard effort into it, causing my pressure to go *really* high. that was when it started. then again, I've been doing high performace sports all my life...

Like i said herbalife products can fix that while destressing you... it is a soy based diet and cellular nutrition and includes vitamins, minerals and herbs. A good friend of mine was a type 2 diabetic for 8 yr and on shots. and after being on the products for half a year the diabetes disappeared and she could drop all her med.s.

Not sure but a vacation also would be able to help you :)

PattyeCake* 06-10-2003 04:58 PM

To control it naturally,
moderate exercise, (walking, cycling, Chair aerobics, movement therapy, dance therapy, and water aerobics)

lower sodium intake, deep breathing.. etc, there are many things one can do to lower blood pressure

According to a new German study that appeared in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, researchers found that calcium and vitamin D supplementation is effective in reducing blood pressure as well...

if you cannot maintain a healthy BP level, please consult your doctor ;)

GrimShawn 06-10-2003 05:00 PM

Drink beer smoke weed talk shit then repeat!

Theo 06-10-2003 05:05 PM

sorry to haar that :( :( :( :( :(

Only a doctor can tell you how to lower your blood pressure and what's causing it. I would take a guess it's from the anxious. As you said you are in good physical condition and you are doing a health life. If it is caused by anxious, then probably you need to relax, get some medication from the doctor that will help you and get a small break from the things you do lately.

Theo 06-10-2003 05:16 PM

in addition,

my spelling sucks lately
i have a fucking spyware i cant get rid of
i have to study some final exam shit
i'm bored and nothing seems to change it today

my blood preasure is also HIGH

:helpme too

A&D Engineering makes the best Digital blood pressure monitors. Don't know what they cost, got mine when I was a Scale dealer for them.
Penrod you better get your ass to a doctor *RAT* now.
171 over 111
Equinox You better get your ass to a doctor *RAT* now
152/104 is HIGH they say now it should be like 110/80 use to be 120/80. High blood pressure is nothing to miss around with.
Salt quit putting it on your food, you get more than enough in food you eat without adding more.

Take the Meds they give you, then think about other ways of getting it down.
This is some serious shit. I'm not trying to scare you 2 but better listen to the doctor.

Bro, a month ago I was in the same situation.

I've taken out entirely:
Soda or any drink that is loaded with sugar
Eating at fast food places
Stopped Smoking
Watched Salt

I have started drinking lots of water and vitamins.

I didn't think i was overly stressed either, but it was enough of a scare to get me to do all that.

baddog 06-10-2003 06:08 PM

slitting your throat will release high pressure rather quickly

strainer 06-10-2003 06:08 PM

I dropped my BP about 10 points by giving up cafeine - all of it.

The salt thing is over-hyped. Every doctor will tell you that but for many people a moderate salt intake does not raise BP very much.

The water thing is BS. There has never been a scientific study that driking water like a fish is good for you. Same thing with most herbal and food products.

Exercise, obviously. Smoking raised BP around 10 points for me till I gave that up too.

See a Doctor right away, but the drugs are great. ACE Inhibitors are so good for you the damn stuff should be in the water supply.

I love modern drugs.

120/80 right now... :Graucho

Gutterboy 06-10-2003 06:34 PM

I have mild hypertension, here is some of the stuff I've learned.

#1 To take a true resting reading you need to be seated, back supported, feet on the floor, sitting calmly for at least 5 minutes before testing. Hypertension isn't diagnosed unless your average resting reading, averaged from 3 readings taken at seperate times, is over 140/90.

#2. Don't worry about any individual reading (unless its 240/130 at rest or something.. malignant hypertension) because BP can vary ALOT during the day depending on your activity. Blood pressure during a leg press using your max weight can hit 400/300. It can stay at 180-220/90 for hours during hard aerobic exercise. Anxiety can make it high.

#3: Reducing sodium to lower blood pressure has very little scientific basis. During the DASH diet (a lowfat, higih fruits & veggies diet aimed at lowering blood pressure) trials, they found it didn't matter very much whether the person reduced salt to under 1500mg a day or not, the diet lowered bp 5-10 points either way.

#4 What does work for reducing blood pressure non pharmacologically is the following: The DASH diet, reduing alcohol intake, getting regular aerobic exercise, losing weight, quitting tobacco if you use, and lowering your caffeine consumption.

ANyway, don't worry about 1 reading of 150/100. An emergency room won't do much but give you some oral drugs and send you home unless you're over 220/120 and there is evidence of immediate end organ damage. Unless you have extremely high pressures, what matters with BP is your average pressure over the long term.. decades.

So do see your doc, but don't panic just yet :)
