Korn Covers Metallica

Doing a live cover of "One" right now on MTV...not bad at all.

fantasycontent 05-13-2003 09:53 PM

they did a really good job! Limp Bizkit's cover sucked!

I don't like the peeps that do the whole "OMFG YOU'RE ON MTV SELLOUT SHIT" like people do to Limp Bizkit. Some of their stuff is poppy (because MTV has the teen gen into it), but a lot of it is pretty good heavy shit.

I haven't seen Bizkit's cover of it...but Korn's was excellent (except the cut off right before the main solo, don't think he could keep up with Hammet)! :thumbsup

evildick 05-13-2003 09:57 PM

The Snoop Dog thing was pretty embarrassing. Same with the Avril Lavigne cover.

I watched the whole show just to see if they played any of their new shit, and they do at the end, but they cut it off just as it's getting started.

What they did show didn't sound too shabby though.

Amputate Your Head 05-13-2003 09:58 PM

bands that are made already should not be allowed to cover other bands while they're still alive and playing...

there's something just wrong about it.

If your watching the mtv icon you'll see Limp bizkit perform shortly.....I also agree probly never would have been able to keep up with hammets finger speed....He has got to be one of the most bad ass guitarists every! :2 cents:

She did a cover of "Fuel". She sounded like a drunk girl doing Karaoke.

Hmm I haven't heard that one yet. "One" is my favorite Metallica song, wonder if Korn could really do it justice. Darkness, imprisoning me, all that I see, absolute horror...

Never been a huge fan of covers unless they were live. Staind does a great live cover of Tool's Sober, it was a pleasant surprise at their show. And Tool likes to insert Elvis lyrics into Stinkfist, though I wonder if they do that anywhere other than Memphis?

Speaking of Metallica, their cover of Seger's Turn the Page - my favorite Seger song - was actually OK. Not great, but not bad either. I went to their show here in '97 (?) but didn't go when they came more recently, so I didn't get to see them do Turn the Page live, if that was even in their setlist. Tool I saw both times they came, of course...

Is the Korn cover showing up on Gnutel^Wthe radio anywhere, or is it just on MTV?

The drumme really nailed the double kicks and the "Korn Bass" sound you can obviously recognize added pure power to the song. I liked it a lot.

Ace-Ace 05-13-2003 10:13 PM

Yah, I guess I'm watching this ICON show...it just said Limp Bizkit is coming up soon.

Ace-Ace 05-13-2003 10:20 PM

Hmmm, I don't care too much for their guitarist's ability to cover Metallica...but they sure do know how to put on a live show.

Sly_RJ 05-13-2003 10:29 PM

I find it hilarious that Avril, Snoop, Limp Bizkit, etc. were selected to pay "tribute" to one of the greatest bands of all time.

What a fucking joke. Fuck MTV.

Want a tribute to Metallica? Throw in some up and comers who can really jam.

Cool I'll have to find a copy then and check it out. And I know what you mean by the "Korn Bass" sound. Something about their unique bass plus drums combined at the same moment, with a result that only Korn can produce.

if you find an mpg on the net some where let me know...i'd like to get a copy of that as well.

Bulworth 05-13-2003 11:07 PM

OK, got a copy. Overall grade, B-, I'm being harsh 'cause the first half was a bit off, and it was short.

They're going too fast for the first two minutes, though they seem to find themselves around "cut this life." The intro guitar riffs are perfect, as is the brief helicopter sound, but it could have been more profound. Drums are absolutely fucking perfect through the entire song.

The vocals are too Jonathan-y for my taste during the first couple of minutes (I know, I know, it's a Korn cover, but still, a cover should be a cover). The second half of the song was much more aggressive, and much more true to the original, with vocals which at times were nearly indistinguishable from Hetfield. I'd have given this cover an A if he'd sung the whole song that way.

The guitar work is spot-on. Wish they'd continued through the ending guitar solo of the original - there's a good two minutes worth of solid sound that Korn didn't bother to deal with (perhaps they did, and I got a bum copy?).

Not the best cover, but definitely worth listening to. I like Korn, I like Metallica, this seems to be a fair enough combination!

I got an MP3 and I'm downloading the MPG now. If you want it, lemme know your ICQ/AIM/whatever, and I'll, uh, "point you to where you can purchase a legal copy," heh heh.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 05-13-2003 11:11 PM

Damn...
KORN blows Metallica way the fuck away now.

WTF was Anthony thinking?
I would had more respect if they covered an 80's Duran Duran song.

Fuck what am I gonna do now:(

Not korns new stuff and old korn still isnt as good as metallica's old shit!

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 05-13-2003 11:20 PM

Your right Fantasy, Hammets shred style was nothing short of near impossible till you hear it. I do have to agree Hammets dynamics back then were truly insane, something KORN does indeed lack.
BUT.

The rage. The rage and anger of Metallica is long dead and the anger is gone from Hetfield.
THe rage in Korn is alive and well unlike Metallica's somber wannabe Metal chops.

yeah i agree but shit man they are getting old now....their best cd in my opinon was ride the lighting then master of puppets!! Back when they were young and still angry!!!

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 05-14-2003 12:02 AM

I've played 6 string for more than 12 years now at home. More intensely when I was younger of course.

Note: Hammet's solo's are a kabob of frills and trill's done in improvosition however in some instances the Modality of them and his natural ability to find the right sound even on a finger bend is truly truly fucking incredible.

Ya mention Ride The Lightening album. The Album is I think a hallmark of perfection and prolly Hammet's most incredible work if not one of the most incredible album's that epitimizes what metal was in the early 80's.

I've tried many a time back in the day getting the entire song "Call of Kthulu" correct as played. Though some portions have to be improvised. I was 20 or so at the time and I felt that I never got it right. Even with my GK going through a Marshal into a Jackson with EKG pick ups. It never sounded right.

Then Nirvana came with Nevermind...
Thats when I stopped playing seriously. Thats when I stopped going to a studio, thats when I left the wannabe band I was in.

I knew metal was dead and "the art of shred" would eventually be lost forever after "Nevermind" went platinum. An album with complete disregard to actual skill.

That Album showed that record companies were truly willing to take a fucked up looser musician with nearly no talent and nothing good to say and push em through the grinder for mass consumption. They sacrificed quality for quantity to make higher profits.

fantasycontent 05-14-2003 12:18 AM

back when i used to play i would also try for hours to play some of hammets solos one of my favorite to play (not on ride the lighting) was 4 horse men....but no matter how many times i tried or practiced i could never do the whole thing...the second solo he kicks it into mock speed. I was never very serious about playing only did it for fun in high school but I always loved playing metallica shit!! Other then the solos it was pretty easy to play thier riffs since they were mostly power cords. I still remember the first song i learned to play or riff...it was the begining to battery. After that i was hooked on learning more of their stuff.

Yeah Nirvana really changed the music industry though to be perfectly honest i never really like Nivermind....later in their career they made some good songs (cant think of any of the names) but that wasnt until like their 3rd cd.

well, yeah, it's pretty hard to stay angry when you're 40 ;)

I do admit getting a little choked up when Metallica started their medley with "Hit The Lights"............

I know what you mean thats how i felt when they played creeping death or the little segment that they did during their little jam at the end.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 05-14-2003 12:35 AM

True 40 is somthing and by then the "Art" is supposed to be better.
It does not have to be shred or speed metal, but damn after "And Justice For All" it was like Metallica threw the book of everything they knew away and forgot everything.

Lar's lost count of a simple 4/4, Hammet was reposessed by himself as the demon stepped out of him, and Hetfield just became one of no words of meaning. Jason couldnt even stand it and couldnt survive the legend.

Cliff however...
Nothing can be said cept he was prolly gonna be better than Les Claypool by the age of 30 on the base at the rate he was goin!

fantasycontent 05-14-2003 12:41 AM

yeah ...and justice for all was the last of their really good shit. And even then they were starting to slip. I like a few of their songs after that like but it def was not the metallica everyone knew.

Burton yeah he was a legend...the bass solo he did on what was orginally called metal up your ass was fucking bad...never seen another bassist pull it off.

I admit my adventures to Metallicaville became much less exciting after "Justice"

While I think Claypool is one of the best, I think Burton was head and shoulders above him already...I remember learning not only "Anesthesia" (as mentioned in another thread) but songs like "Phantom Lord" and "Orion" that were amazing had some tough bass playing.....

hmmm, I may have to go break out the old BC Rich Warlock, tune it up and start annoying neighbors and family alike with some bass solos ;)))
